Definitely agree about the Conan swords. I've been tempted to buy replicas of them before I even saw the movie, and still would, despite not caring for it.

His father's sword is my favorite.

Going back a few days to a comment in the DOFP thread....

:lol You've got nerve slagging us T2 guys when you prefer Aliens over Alien! I happen to love Aliens myself and will generally prefer to watch it over the first film but we've got guys here who will rip into you for that! Aliens is T2! :lol

I don't consider ALIENS to be the "T2" of the Alien saga because of it's unpolished feel and the overall tone. It's very gritty and unyielding, with almost documentary-style frenetic action. I would never fault anyone for preferring ALIEN to ALIENS. ALIEN was the pioneer and is classic and even features better acting, writing, and more artistic cinematography.

ALIENS turned the unstoppable beast into cannon fodder "bugs" and had a lot of 80's testosterone and even copied the blowing up of the Death Star with the fusion reactor, right down to note for note music when it exploded.

BUT....I've always found it terrifying in films when the "Calvary" is called and they aren't enough. It goes back to one of the Dirty Harry movies where two cops are stabbed out front of a store and other horror films where cops are called and even they are terrified. There was some other horror movie where people at a hotel or something bury people up to their necks in dirt out back and then come and grind them into the dinner they serve (not TCM, it was something else) and a cop gets involved and is basically frightened into leaving by the main bad guy. Always makes me shudder.

Well in ALIENS the marines are the Calvary called in after the events of the first film and they get their asses kicked in horrifying fashion. That's just freaky to me. And at the end of the day I just prefer shotguns and pulse rifles over a good moody thriller. I've said before the films that stick as being my favorites tend to combine Subject Matter + Visceral Reaction I had when I first saw it + Filmmaking Quality. Jaws always rocks the latter two but beaches and sharks have never really been *my* thing so it's never found itself at the top of any of my "favorite" lists.

Aliens is not the T2 of the Alien films because it's a great movie that takes the series into totally different direction. T2 has always felt like nothing more then a big budget version of the first film to me. But even with all that extra money it is nowhere near as good as the original. I still enjoy it and felt the Director's cut really improved it. I thought the theatrical version was a huge let down when I first saw it.

T1 was an excellent Sci Fi horror and I would say that ALIENS has more in common with T1 then T2. Both Aliens and T1 are Sci Fi/Horror/Action films... T2 was a Glossy Sci Fi/action/family movie.

Now before a-dev gets cranky I should again stress that really enjoy T2 and the Terminator series as a whole is one of my fav... Personally I even really enjoy T3 (it has some of the best action scenes of the series) and TS. T2 is just one of those films that I never got why it is loved so much and considered to be better then the first.

Also I would like to state that I like ALIEN more the ALIENS but I think ALIENS is one of the greatest sequels ever.

See, I think you're off your rocker sometimes Khev when it comes to some of these things about films. Hypocritical would be an understatement. Aliens is essentially just a bigger, higher budget version of Alien. Instead of one, lone Alien, you have a crap ton. Instead of truck drivers being picked off one by one, you have marine soldiers being picked off one by one. Instead of just flamethrowers, now we have flamethrowers and guns. Instead of the evil Ash from the first film, we have Bishop to mess with are expectations as an audience. You even have the Queen being offed in a similar fashion at the end.

The only real difference is the inclusion of the kid and Ripley's PTSD. Hmmm, sounds familiar. You even have Ripley overcoming her prejudices from film 1 to evolving in film 2 . . . just like Sarah Connor.

So don't even try it man. If T2 is just a "bigger, dumber, more expensive" version of T1, then so is Aliens. A-dev was spot on.

It's not the intricate design of the hilt, it's how the sword is used in the film bros.

Mel Gibson hacking up Brits in creative ways with the Wallace long sword > Ahnuld twirling it around like a baton girl

Sting from LOTR is a cooler sword than Conan's. Not dissing Conan, I love that movie, just never thought the sword was that special. Would I own one? Sure, it's cool. But "neatest, bestest, coolest"? Nahhh

Crom laughs at your puny William Wallace and LOTR toothpicks.

On the ''Is Aliens the T2 of it's franchise'' debate.

Yeah the reason I brought that up is I often see that fans of Alien take a similar attitude to Aliens as guys like Khev and Kara (and seemingly JAWS) take to T2. Kind of like 'its a fun movie, but that's all, you shouldn't really like it more than the original' attitude. So it was surprising to me that Khev prefers Aliens.

That said Khev I love what you said about Aliens.

I prefer aliens to alien too, to me it's a great film a classic, none stop action ride with iconic scenes. Alien is a great
Film too though.

You don't even know what points are being made. If T2 only kept everything awesome about T1 but did it on a grander scale then yeah it'd be like ALIENS. But ALIENS was anything but "dumber." It dared to be a whole new genre. In that regard its actually closer to TWS compared to TFA. It wasn't just a bigger, dumber, space trucker movie with more truckers being picked off by more aliens. No, it was a Viet Nam war movie in space! NO ONE would describe ALIEN that way. That was a true curve ball and very risky so in that regard ALIENS is infinitely more clever than T2.

ALIENS wasn't preachy, the action didn't feel sanitized, and the action didn't feel contrived. Therefore its no T2. I've never had a problem with T2 having a grander scale or better effects. If that's all it had then it indeed could have been it's own "ALIENS." But it wasn't.

But ALIEN was a horror film... Aliens changed the tone and feel completely. Other then the end of the movie (shooting it out into space) it was all very different. Granted instead of Ash you had Burke... But Burke was a much better character at least

They went after the Aliens. They knew what they were up against. The plot, structure, and feel of the film are all very different.... T2 very much follows the same plot and structure of T1... But I will admit the feel is very different.. (but not in a good way for me)

I am fine that people love T2... I personally don't get why it is held as high as it is... But that is just taste so it's not like I think the fans are crazy. My big issue with T2 is I thought it was a big drop from T1. I just prefer the grittier, more suspenseful, more Horror like elements of the first film. T2 took many scenes and just made it glossier IMO but less gritty and less exciting. The Basic plot and structure are very much the same. The whole last 20 min is almost a shot by shot remake with the events of the action scenes. Chopper chasing a car instead of a truck, Truck blows up ice instead fire, Ice seems to stop Terminator until it doesn't, big factory climax hero/protector dies and leaves a loved one behind to morn.

Now there is nothing wrong with all of that... Except for me I just thought the first film did it all better. Perhaps not on a technical level but on an emotional one. I just cared more about Sarah and Kyle then I ever did about John and Overacting, Tuff guy Sarah.

But that is just preference.

Like I said I really like T2.... I think Arnold is fantastic in it. I love the deleted, attempted smile, scene. But I also like him better then any of the Human characters. That was one of my major problems also.

But Hey, a lot of people love it... So please don't take it as an insult or attack. It's just how I view the film. I think if a poll was taken I would probably be in the minority on which one was the better movie. I just don't see it because my tastes are different... I know it does not make me right.

I agree with all of this. While I like ALIEN better, ALIENS is one of the greatest sequels ever because it went off in a completely different direction. My only complaint was the lame way they got rid of the Queen. Everything else is fantastic.

I forgot to mention the "sanitized action" but that is why I felt T1 was grittier and why I called T2 a Sci Fi/ action / Family movie.

Well, I agree that Khev is off his rocker :D However, he isn't wrong about Alien vs. Aliens IMO. On the other hand, I think T1 and T2 are also pretty fundamentally different. T1 is a suspenseful, sci-fi horror movie. T2 is more an sci-fi action spectacle (I won't call it a family friendly action comedy for the sake of sparing a-dev a defensive response :D ). Yeah, the story has obvious similarities, but I don't think this is an Evil Dead vs. Evil Dead 2 situation. Regarding Alien/Aliens, they are even more fundamentally different to me, so I really don't agree with Difab's point there. The Marines aren't picked off one by one. They are beat down in a firefight at the beginning, and then nearly everyone else that dies bites it together in another showdown at the end. Alien is a sci-fi suspense horror. Aliens is a futuristic, suspenseful action movie. The similarities Fab points out are, as with the similarities between T1 and T2, pretty superficial when you break down the tone and objectives of the movie as a whole.
