there are some parts that are much better than newer ones, like the headsculpt, gauntlets sculpt or actually functional medpack. everything else is very outdated, including proportions and paint.
also it featured accurate shape of P1 palm, which i didn't see anymore since. but that's because HT never made it since. (i doubt they'd touch that detail today though - or even know about it)

It doesn't. Even it's the only Jungle Hunter 1/6 figure from Hot Toys. The only thing good about it is being pose-able and looks kinda OK for in-the-box-only display.

MMS162 is a better figure. Even it needs upgrade kits to be "the Jungle Hunter" but it's still great action figure on its own... kinda.

Thank you very much for both of your responses.

This is a very tough choice since no solution is perfect. I'm leaning toward the original MMS90 since that's the look I want from the first movie but Lugal makes a good point about MMS162.

Aside from advances in paint, scale, etc., does MMS162 (Predators) essentially provide the same "look" as MMS90? They look pretty close with some slight alterations with the gear. Sorry for the ignorance, I'm a very casual Predator fan.

I see Hot Toys has a new one up for pre-order - AVP (MMS443 Wolf Predator) - but this is straying from the original Predator.

i had the same feelings so came up with the solution of uniting their good parts into one figure.

still not sure which palms to use. new ones look superior sculpted and painted but old have black gloves.

Does the original MMS90 hold up compared to the newer Predator releases from Hot Toys?

I'm mainly interested in getting Classic Predator that was featured in the Arnold movie but I was curious if Hot Toys made a lot of advances in the quality of the figure. For example, the Robocop ED209 and Alien figures were markedly improved and fixed major deterioration flaws between releases.

I've been collecting Hot Toys since 2014 but this is my first foray into the Predator line.

I just picked up an MMS90, and I also have the MMS162 figure.

Honestly, side by side, the MMS90 is more striking in the detolf to me. MMS162 does have better paint apps, but I like a lot of MMS90's parts better (as they're a bit more intricate and detailed) and the sculpt better.

It does have its shortcomings when compared to today's standards (such as paint apps and proportions) but I feel it still holds up well overall as a figure. Not as good in some aspects, yet better in others.

I was wondering this myself. I got bored of the Classic few years back mainly due to the lack of articulation and owning it for over 5 years so I sold it. I'm finally in the mood for a new Predator so I was thinking of maybe getting the MMS90, am I really setting myself up for disappointment?

Well, my thoughts have changed a little bit since then after actually having him in hand for a little while.

I still have my MMS90 at the moment, but I have him boxed up. I've actually decided he doesn't fit with the rest of the 2.0 Predators. I still maintain the conviction that the sculpt is actually pretty good and the armor has nice weathering to it, but the overall figure I think is a bit too inaccurate for me to be satisfied. The size, design, and paint apps of the body are quite lackluster compared to the newer 2.0 Preds, and the bio mask sticks out way too much. With the bio mask off though, the sculpt looks really good. Sculpt and detailed armor, those are about the only two things I think this figure really has going for it. My plan is to eventually sell him and use that to fund Fugitive (if HT even does him).

If one wants a JH, my honest advice would be to just get the Classic and do him up like JH. The longer it goes with HT not doing an official JH 2.0, the more I start to believe that Classic was meant to be Classic/JH 2.0 combined (hence why it included the clean mask). Even if they did an actual JH 2.0, I'd be willing to wager they'd mostly recycle a lot from the Classic. I have my Classic simply with the clean bio mask on the jungle diorama base that came with MMS90 and I quite like it. It's not an official JH and for me serves as a Classic/JH hybrid, but I think it's a better and more solid figure than MMS90.

So my answer now to whether MMS90 holds up to the recent Predator figures or not would be no.

I'm not sure which Predator you're looking for specifically, but I personally really like the AvP 2.0 Preds (Scar, Celtic, or Ancient), and P2 Elder 2.0. If you want one from the original films, I'd go with CH 2.0 and then try and hunt down a custom plasmacaster and bio mask for him. The stock plasmacaster on it kind of sucks and I think the stock bio mask is decent enough, but that figure with a custom mask and caster takes it to new heights.

Thanks SilverStar17. I just want one P1 Pred to represent the character, I'm not interested in any other iterations. I had the Classic for the longest time, and honestly I got really bored with it since it can't even spread its legs. Overtime I sold it and was more attracted to the original MMS90 P1 while being fully aware of its limitations, but everyone and their mom would advice me against getting one.

I'm glad you've changed your tune, and that just indicates it could turn out the same for me. Maybe I'll hold off a Predator figure for now.

No problem. :duff

If you want a JH representation, then I would just go with Classic and simply do him up like JH. I know people sold conversion kits for it, but I’m not sure if they still do. However, I have seen some being sold on eBay where people have already converted it to a JH.

I’m not sure how averse you are to Classic figure being that you said you’ve already grown bored of it once and sold it, but I would give him another chance. Like I said, I have mine posed on the jungle diorama base that came with MMS90 with simply the clean bio mask, no mods, and I still think he sufficiently looks the part.

I was being honest at the time when I made that initial post regarding MMS90, and like I said, my feelings regarding the sculpt and armor remain the same. It does have its good parts, but I think when I first got it, I simply wanted to force myself to like it being that I had just received it. As time went on though, I realized that it just wasn’t working for me. I have several 2.0 Preds so the shortcomings of MMS90 were glaring when displayed with other newer Predators, including Classic. I suppose he might work if that’s the only Predator figure you have, but even then, I still think the better option would be Classic converted to a JH because it’s overall a more solid figure. A lot of people have posted some really good pics of him lately in the Classic thread.

I just received mine.

And I'm absolutely happy that I bought it. Yes, there are some offs about it, the hair needs a bit of fixing and I need to paint the dreadlock beads gold as they faded in the box overtime. But that sculpt? The body? Man oh man. It's a beautiful piece. Sure, it's paint apps aren't as upto date as the MMS162, which I've had for years and love, but the moment you own the Jungle Hunter, even if you've done up your Classic like I have with upgrades and trophies, you realize just how fantastic the Jungle Hunter is. My only gripe is the mask, but I never plan on using it as I bought this for that original Predator sculpt and the articulation of the piece. Don't get me started on the articulation. It's excellent. And the body size? The more I look at it the more I think that this body is more true to the original Predator than the Classic (mask off, mask is stupid large). The Classic has a bit of bulk, whereas the JH always had a slightly larger head to its body.

The MMS162 is a beautiful piece and I love mine, but I'm being honest when I say that since getting the MMS90, I absolutely love it far more even with the flaws it has. And for me the only flaws are that mask, the plastic wrist blades (still look good but metal is always better) and the hair. But the hair isn't anything I can't fix.

If you're a fan of the first two movies, it's a must have. I'm not a fan of the rest of the movies except Predators, so I never plan on owning them. I spent a year deciding if I wanted the MMS90 and then just decided to go for it. I'm glad I did.

I've been collecting since 2010, and out of 40 something models I have in my cases, this has been my most exciting purchase in years.

When I get the chance to post pics I will. But if you're a fan of the movies, go for it. It has far more presence than the MMS162 ever will, even with the upgrades and that's because of its articulation.

And Dean here is the reason I ended up buying it. I watched this and was sold, the only modern video showing what the MMS90 actually looks like setup nicely.

I'm mms90 all the way. You can usually pose him more dynamically than the other predators, which hides some of the shortcomings. And of all the predators, we was the most dynamic in movement - jumping through the trees and pouncing on stuff. He came across as more agile than CH, anyway. Can't remember much of the other films because they don't exist. Just a fun figure even with it being a little outdated. And short. Happy you're so happy with it!

That’s what I loved about it as well. :lol

I mean the sculpt is pretty good, but overall as a figure it just looks out of place to me next to the other 2.0 Predators.
