I don't know. Returns has better characters, but I found both films to be boring, but in different ways.

Have to say that surprises me. I would have thought kids would prefer MOS just because of modern special effects and super fights alone. Perhaps even kids are fatigued on cataclysmic city destructions and Zimmer scoring everything.

I'm ready to admit that the MOS main theme composition (What are you going to do when you're not saving the world) is starting to bug me.

While catchy and heroic in parts, the way it goes from quiet piano to very loud and sharp horns is rather annoying.

Annoying in the sense that I have to keep lowering and raising the volume because one second you can't hear the piano but in the next second the horns are blowing your ears out.

Movie music should not be that way.

I liked it before I saw the film and posted as much. I was quite complimentary in fact. After I saw MOS though my yearning for the Williams theme kicked back into high gear. I tried listening to the Zimmer score last night and had to turn it off. So I've done a bit of a turnaround on it.

They're totally right. That great, beautiful sweeping, heroic theme would've been out of place during Superman's unheroic smashing of humanity.

Perhaps I am destined never to wholly like a Superman film. If any film they make today is not compatible with the best possible theme for Superman himself that there could ever be then I don't know where that leaves me. There's no other music I want to hear for Superman. I think I can say that now definitively.

Anyway I take it that clip was part of a complete review. I'll have a look.

If any film they make today is not compatible with the best possible theme for Superman himself that there could ever be then I don't know where that leaves me. I'm always open for new scores, but the drums theme didn't do it for me either.

I still kinda think its decent as a piece of music but I resent it for masquerading as a Superman theme. I admit I am seriously, seriously a JW fundamentalist on this. His is the one true theme.

What was that music in the beginning of Man of Steel? Like at the truck stop and the fisherman's house? I can't remember but it was almost like country music. I'm sure it was an actual group.

It is. And I wish they can make a film with a non depressing tone that could suit such a great theme.

It was my biggest regret about Superman Returns. That that film, using the JW theme, just recycled old ground instead of getting a bit more ambitious. It was a wasted opportunity and now I fear we'll never hear it again because people will (and do already) only associate it with the Donner/Donneresque films with quaint special effects and/or plain ol Lex Luthor landscheme plots. I see no reason why it couldn't also have been the soundtrack to a modern Superman II with super-battles.

Yeah, that was weird, stuck out for me, trying to ground it more in reality I guess.

It's not even grounding it anymore is it, it's like pulverizing it into dust now.
