I prefer the Star Wars universe as a whole and the vast amount of information is memorizing and fun to read about.
But as films and as an audience member viewing the films, I found the Lord of the Rings Trilogy to be far more entertaining and a magical movie experience.

I didn't grow up in the Star Wars era. Sure I watched them on video, but I saw all 3 LotR multiple times in theaters

I grew up with an utter fascination for Star Wars. I collected all of the toys, old school and new. One of the best presents I ever received was an original Jabba the Hutt action figure from RotJ still in the box. Christmas and birthdays revolved around Star Wars. There were no other villains in my mind who held up even marginally before Darth Vader and the Emperor...
That being said, I feel The Lord of the Rings is the epic for my generation and rendered one of the most wildly-acclaimed books in history in a manner that made people who weren't even fantasy fans run to theaters time and time again to watch Elves, Men, and Dwarves do battle with the Forces of Darkness. It helps to have a passionate Ringer at the helm who also has a deep adoration for stunning action sequences. Lord of the Rings is the reason I started my collectibles collection and is one of my all-time favorite books (the very best alongside Jurassic Park). I remember sitting in the theater and literally being blown away by the first few seconds of Fellowship... knowing instantly that this was indeed something special... then returning to my car in the parking lot to discover that the doors had frozen shut. The Two Towers started a movie-going tradition between one of my best of friends and I. I missed two and a half months of school when I was stricken with Pertussis (Whooping Cough), but I crawled from my bed to reach the theaters for the premiere of Return of the King, carrying a cup in which to spit my excess phlegm caused by the disease, and insisting to my friends and family that, "once I see this movie, I can happily die"... and I didn't know quite how accurate I was in that my physician said he never saw a case so severe.
All of this diatribe aside, I have emotional attachment to both and can't remember a single year of my life when Star Wars or Lord of the Rings didn't have an overwhelming role to play. I can't choose one over the other.

I think the writing in Star Wars is horrible so Lord of The Rings is an easy one for me.

I dont get the hate for the third. I thought it was just as fun, and exciting as the first two. Love the score in that one.

Easily Star Wars for me... I really love both. But to me you can never overcome the impact of SW since I was a child.
But Lord of the Rings is definitey the #2 Trilogy in my books.
