Will ever get another great franchise?

I really think that's why Pixar movies are always consistently excellent. That studio always seems to reinvent The Hero's Journey without straying too far from its concept. Their writers and directors they have are worth their brain power in gold. And the studio doesn't milk franchises either. They're always making something great, and something new.

Cannot wait for Up.

Yeah, Pixar is one of the ONLY studios that have been creating great and original stuff since their first film. They continuously reinvent the Hero's Journey" while keeping it fresh and entertaining. I haven't not liked a single thing they have done.

Now if only their writers would do some horror/sci-fi.... I would be in heaven. :lol

To follow up on my previous post, I will ask a question myself. Are people here expecting the next great franchise, or just the next great film? They're different things entirely.

I guess what I am expecting is the next great icon. With that will be spawned the next great franchise.

I'm expecting both...or either... Just something awe inspiring in the cinema again. Watchmen was close for me, but based on a comic...so I knew the story. There just hasn't been much that I have seen lately that has really wowed me....and I just want that again.

I should send you the naked pictures Batty PMs all the time. Trust me, you will be wowed!

I loved both Riddick movies. I wish they'd make another one. :D

Last I heard, Diesel and (director, screenwriter) David Twohy were developing 2 more films.

I know the general opinion on the second Riddick film is fairly low, but I really have high hopes for this franchise. I don't know why exactly, but I'm very fond. Riddick is a great character.

Creativity and originality are at a low whereas profitability in entertainment is at an all time high.

If i'm making tons of $$$ off of old ass ideas the last thing i'd do is reinvest into new ideas.

What about "Firefly"? That was a great original idea, had a bunch of awesome, memorable characters, managed to spawn a movie and some comic books. The only thing it lacks are some quality collectibles. It would be great if company like Hot Toys could give us the whole crew in 1/6 scale.
As far as horror goes - there's Jigsaw from "Saw" movies. There are already five films made and I'm pretty sure the next one is coming this Halloween.
In videogames "Mass Effect" is a new franchise with a rich, deeply developed universe, great story and likeable characters.

Why did you have to remind me?? :monkey4:monkey4

Hey, I know that they pissed all over that franchise starting from the third film, but at least it was (in the beggining) a fresh idea and had a memorable bad guy.
I also remembered about "Scream".

The thing that gets me,and its so funny,is how every killer is now said to be " the new face of horror" or "the next icon of horror" and they never are. Victor Crowley from Hatchet is not the next big thing in horror. And neither is anyone else who's come out. It's quite sad.

This is exactly why original ideas stall in development. No one wants to risk the money to try something original. To build a franchise you have to think past one film. This is even more of an investment in time and cash. Most franchises based on original concepts get built after the fact. Take Highlander for example. The first movie was very obviously structured to be a one off film. The sequels and the TV series had to work around that fact. To avoid those kinds of mistakes I'm sure the studios look at all new franchise concepts with the idea that it offers potential for sequels, tv series, cartoons, video games and merchandizing. Otherwise they aren't going to sink their money in something that is untested. Films that are based on existing ideas will get the greenlight much easier because they have a built in audience. I'm sure there are plenty of fresh ideas out there. No one is willing to invest in having them developed.

Nothing is new. :lecture

Nothing Is New by John Edward Everett

Nothing is new
Under the sun;
Into the sea
The waters run;
Back they are brought
Unto their sources,
Only again
To run their courses.

Thought, as well,
Never is new;
Thoughts of our own
Are but a review
Of other thoughts
Of long ago,
That down through time
Like rivers flow.

Over and over
The waters run;
Nothing is new
Under the sun.
Over and over,
Ages through,
Thought is rehearsed,
For nothing is new.
