I read Singer was taking a break from X-Men after this film and filming some other movies.

I think they should give the new X-Men team to another director and let Singer produce or be a consultant.

Never watched much of the lame cartoon, but in the comics Proteus didn't come across as a whiny kid at all. He was like a monster out of a horror movie.

I was gonna say, whiny stupid kids are Singer's specialty.

That's how I know him too. I haven't seen the issues in a long time, but I remember how fantastic and cinematic John Byrne's art was for it and remember thinking back then that it would make an awesome movie, particularly all the reality-bending stuff Proteus did.
