Scariest oompa loompa ever!

First Class is probably the best X-Men film... and Singer had almost nothing to do with it.

That's a little unfair. From what I understand, didn't Singer develop the story, recommend Vaughn as director and stay on as a producer when he became unavailable to direct?

At the end of the day, while Vaughn is stronger in the action department, and while I appreciate his visual style, I find Singer's films to be richer, thematically. If Singer knows how to do anything, it's how to film a character study. Despite any shameless parallels to X2, DOFP is a much more satisfying film to me than FC, and my favorite of the series.

In a related note, I rewatched the original X-Men film tonight. It holds up as a pretty strong flick. Singer didn't set out to make a grandiose spectacle, but rather an interesting character piece. While fanboys like to criticize Woverine's prominence, he gives casual moviegoers an in into this comic book world. The world of heroes and villains sounds just as ridiculous to him as anyone else, but he eases into it with the audience. Plus, all of the other characters are as developed and fleshed out as they need to be, and work well as an ensemble through Logan's eyes.

For me, it's a genuinely good, well put together film that manages to condense 40 years of comic history and themes into a single cohesive and engaging film. The X-Men comic universe can be as esoteric and ridiculous as anything in science fiction or fantasy (which can be great in small doses,) but Singer was able to take the core concept and make it work in a grounded world, in the vein of Donner's original Superman, or Nolan before Nolan. Sure some of the CGI is a little spotty by today's standards, but since the focus is on the characters and political conflict, none of it really hurts the film.

I haven't seen Apocalypse, yet, but I find it hard to believe it's as abysmal as some of the reviews. In my book, Singer hasn't made a bad X-Men yet, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, and look forward to seeing his version of a ridiculous, apocalyptic action flick.

eh civil wars music sucks, like most of the mcu. TWS was bad as well, almost has a punk matrix vibe to it. MCU doesn't have great actors either besides RDJ. I'd say scar jo but shes miscast and barely does anything. I guess mark ruffulo as well, still he doesn't do much. I wont even say Sam Jackson as hes practically nonexistent. I think it could be worse, x-men could be part of the mcu and we could all have x-men movies being **** out 3 times a year with "character development" inching forward one stereotypical step at a time but between 5 movies. Once the hype is over civil war will be mooshed together with the rest of them. Hell at this rate some of the movies all bleed together. TWS AOU and CW in two years from now I wont know the difference. With each x-men movie so far their is plenty going on and plenty of character arcs within the each movie even if it all doesn't connect perfectly. And I love John Ottomans x2 theme.

I mean I just watched the horrible Capt America one, and for people to be all in love with the bromance between STeve and Bucky is ridiculous. Short screen time and it just wasn't really there or that important. People will probably run me off the boards for thinking that though

I'm not sure you watched the same MCU that I did

I'm not sure you watched the same MCU that I did

yeah probably not. As a movie buff and film lover that stuff puts me to sleep :sleep I usually see them once in the theater and never again. Just a hodge-podge of **** happening. If singer can keep x-men away from the mcu formula I'm down for the good the bad and the ugly.

Holy ****, this film is 143 minutes long!
Not sure I wanna sit through all of it...
DoFP made me sleepy at several points.

Why all the dofp hate? I loved that one

This. DoFP was damn great. The only downside was J-Stique. What I don't get is why the MCU is getting shat upon in the X-Men thread... Anyway, my showing is in about 2 hours, so I'll be posting my review shortly. I'm curious to see how much of the room will be filled, truth be told. CW filled 3 showings, Deadpool 3/4 of one showing, and BvS barely half of it. Let's see how the FoX-Men do...

Honestly, when I hear people ******** on something because it doesn't meet their "movie buff criteria", this is what immediately comes to my mind:

And if the "hate" is strong enough, this:

What can I say? I'm a... meme buff...

I think we're all film buffs here, being a film buff and lover really doesn't mean you're going to hate the MCU. I'm a film lover first and foremost and I like the lighter approach the MCU takes, especially when the code words of the era are "dark and gritty". They aren't my favorite movies but I find all of them enjoyable to some level. I'm actually impressed Marvel has been able to make this world work so well in films.
