I don't know about that man, X3 made a lot of money and that seemed to put the series on halt because of how bad it was. Then they made a spinoff and that turned out so bad they planned on rebooting the entire thing until Singer came back on board and decided to turn the reboot into a prequel which is why First Class has so many plot holes within the continuity of the series.

Now I don't think this movie is bad enough that Fox is going to want to reboot everything but I will be pretty shocked if Singer directs the next X-Men film.

X3 didn't halt the series and they didn't care about the mixed reviews. What they did (Rothman) was go the cheap route (which Lauren Donner was against) and greenlit less expensive movies to save money. The first being Origins - which Rothman even publicly called "the studio's answer to X4" which was a nonsensical POV and the film ended up being awful anyway since he neutered Benioff's script and hired Hood to direct a kids movie starring Wolverine and Sabretooth. The second film was to be Josh Schwartz's 80s set YOUNG X-MEN which Origins sets up in the end. That film, along with Goyer's MAGNETO movie were scrapped and combined into FIRST CLASS after Singer and Donner, inspired by Abrams' Star Trek, figured out how to reboot the franchise without rebooting it.

So yeah, Rothman hit the breaks on a direct sequel to X3 to save money, not over mixed reviews.

The current FOX regime loves Singer and won't give me him any trouble over Apocalypse. They just won't let another X-Men: Apocalypse see the light of day.

I don't understand the critics reception towards this movie, I certainly thought it was better than many MCU films (both Thors, Avengers AOU, Ant Man, Cap 1, IM 2 and 3, both Hulks) and it has worse reviews. I'm sure it was better than those ****** ASM movies too but I didn't check those out. :lol

Definitely had a smarter script, better actors and a decent/real villain. I hope the X-films continue with the next cast and young versions of Scott, Jean, Nightcrawler, Storm, etc. I really enjoyed them all.

Psylocke should be time travelled to Deadpool/current times.

What's the deal with Oscar Isaac

He's not even that great of an actor..

That's the craziest thing I've read in this entire thread.

While he didn't come out of this film unscathed, no one will really blame him. He was quite clearly told to "ham it up".

He's a fantastic actor, already one of the best of this generation.

Went into this film wantin' to see more Fassneto.
Left it wantin' more Oscapocalypse.

______

My message to FOX, Kinberg and Singer:

Well. . .the U.S. more or less did this with bin Laden when he was in the Mujahideen fighting the Soviets. So. . .

Coming back to DOFP, recall that just prior to the scene where Mags moves the stadium, Xavier has a chat with his future self, and knows that Magneto in the long run is a crucial ally in the mutants' fight for survival. So to pull a Khev Batman V Superman-type justification, I think it is perfectly internally consistent with the logic of the films. Mags has the potential to do bad, or good in the future. But from a self-preservation standpoint, given that unknown, it's better for the mutants by far to have him around than not to.

Post 9/11 was more pertinent to my comparison :lol

I just can't buy it. Too far is too far, and killing thousands - potentially millions - is it :lol That he changed his mind and stopped mid-way hardly compensates. He should be hated the world over, he should have no friends left, not even Xavier.

I keep hearing the CW comic sucks ass, I'm guessing that's why (among other factors) they didn't use it for the movie.

I read it a while back but I don't know if I got the entire story since as usual when it comes to comics you have to buy so many other stories to understand the whole story. I read prelude, the main story, the Civil War Spidey Story, the Civil War Wolverine Story and I think that's it, but I know there were a while lot more perspectives I ended up not reading.

I liked it, but some motivations seemed forced, the movie did a much better job showing Tony's conflict and not making him actually the bad guy like the comic version did. The comic had some really amazing stuff in it that the movie couldn't add because of the limited roster. I guess the core story the movie does better, but overall I enjoyed the comic a lot more. I didn't really love either of them though :lol

Yea I remember Rothman was a cancer that plagued Fox, he stripped X2s budget so much that Singer had to take the Sentinels out of the film.

I didn't know most of the origins info though, makes sense why that movie turned out so bad :lol

I guess time will tell but my gut tells me Singer won't be coming back as a director.

I agree with you that this movie is better than the movies you listed, but I think the critics are right about this movie, they were just really really wrong about the movies you listed.

It was def better than alot of the MCU films just nowhere near as good as DOFP, FIRST CLASS and X2.

It definitely makes my Marvel CBM top 20.

1. X2: X-Men United (2003)
2. X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
3. The Avengers (2012)
4. X-Men: First Class (2011)
5. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
6. Spider-Man 2 (2004)
7. Iron Man (2008)
8. Deadpool (2016)
9. Guardians of The Galaxy (2014)
10. X-Men (2000)
11. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
12. The Punisher (2004)
13. The Incredible Hulk (2008)
14. Captain America: Civil War (2016)
15. The Wolverine (2013)
16. X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
17. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
18. X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)
19. Hulk (2003)
20. Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

X2 followed weapon X arc to a tee

The first XMEN movie was horrible aside from the opening scene which is inspired by the comic.

Everything great from the XMEN universe in the live action films was inspired by the comics or cartoons.

Days of Future past resetting timeline came from cartoon episode "one mans worth"

If u don't think so you are deluded.

X2 was loosely based :lol

X2000 is still the most beautifully lookin' and soundin' film of this poor franchise.

Hard to believe that the same director and cinematographer made "Crapocalypse".

The comic is much better than the film. Much more poignant and heartbreaking from start to finish.

Really wish they'd called the movie something else and not wasted a story that epic just to put on a friendly skirmish at an airport in a Cap movie.

I need to rewatch them all again. With all our talk of the destruction he causes in Apocalypse I want to remind myself if Magneto's plans and deeds in the previous films come anywhere close, or could have come anywhere close if they were allowed to go unopposed.

In X2 he almost made Charles kill every non-mutant on the planet. :wave

This is why Nolan reigns supreme for me as director of CBMs.

The digital age has really compromised the look of these films. The switch from film to digital, from practical set to green screen, its incredibly noticeable.

The first three X-Men films look miles better than the prequel trilogy and its all due to digital and green screen being the prevalent choice for studio pictures these days.

The Wolverine (2013) is the only digitally shot film in the franchise that I think looked great.

I'll bet you a beer you find the "brilliant" DOFP snoozeworthy on your re-watch.

I don't see how it is but it's definitely not the best movie in this great franchise. X2, FC, and DOFP are just objectively better than X1 :lol

This franchise is really no different than any other in terms of quality. What franchise doesn't have crappy films in it? The MCU has a bunch, Star Wars has only produced 2 good movies out of 7 in my opinion, and I'm not going to count the horrible animated film they made either :lol

Unless you think the MCU is 13/13 then I can't see what makes this a poor franchise compared to the rest being milked right now.

The comic gave Cap and Tony legitimate voices in a controversial and explosive issue. The film didn't.

People think the comic is revered because it had more characters but that's not it at all. Its because it presented serious subject matter and gave its protagonists strong motivations. It also had something all of Disney's films lack - teeth.

The Civil War comic changed the Marvel Universe forever and the way people look at Captain America and Tony Stark.

The Civil War film was a bona-fide trailer for BP & Spider-Man's movies that featured a 36 hour feud between Cap and Tony (which Feige naturally resolved with a cute letter in the mail at the end).
