It's just more of the same. Just the same mindless regurgitation of all the same visuals and sounds we've been been bludgeoned with for over two decades. Girl boss good. Patriarchy/Nazis bad. Explosions. The single tiny scrap of originality in the nearly 4 minutes was remixing an old Jane's Addiction song instead of Pink Floyd.

When everything's "epic," nothing is. It's time for a return to minimalism.

The trailer looks like they had an idea... then another idea... then another idea... then another idea... then another idea... and decided to go with all of them.

On paper, Rebel Moon sounds like something right up my alley. But that trailer left me underwhelmed actually. I'm getting Star Wars, Firefly, Cowboys & Aliens and Narnia vibes, but the thing that it reminded me of the most was Jupiter Ascending. Remember that one?

That was another film where they just threw all kinda silly ideas around which didn't stick but kinda became stuck together because of sheer mass and we ended up with a convuluted film with space royalty, fantasy lizard gargoyle folk, magic-silver-surfing-werewolf-mike, but also present day earth and I think there was something to do about bees being royalty...

I will watch Rebel Moon though. Mainly because it's easily available on Netflix.

I was getting Warhammer 40k as well, and Burroughs' Martian Chronicles.

Every time the trailer shifted to some new inspiration I felt like Peter Griffin...

Hmm. Bein' an epic fantasy fan - or whatever this is, space fantasy - thing is, there's Dune Pt2 coming out about the same time.

So it's harder to care. Reading the synopsis it doesn't necessarily sound all girl boss but unfortunately a lot like that awful Witcher prequel. But the trailer looked good. I'll watch it coz I have Netflix why not.

But yeah, maybe it's time for something closer to the bone, all of this end of the universe but all saved by a motley crew of adventurers is an overload at the moment. Isn't another season of Wheel of Time due out as well?

Maybe someone should write something where the motley band of adventurers LOSE. :monkey3

Yeah that trailer did nothing for me. Just feels like another thin excuse to throw as many crazy visuals at the screen as possible.

I couldn't take more than 20 minutes of that last zombie movie he did for Netflix, and I expect this will be no different.

Yeah, 15-20 mins of AOTD and then I noped the hell outta there. This looks like a migraine inducing mess.

Trailer was oddly generic. Lots of stuff going on but all of it seen before. Even the shots chosen like the ships travelling to planet are things we have seen a dozen times.

You can have a very unoriginal, derivative movie but you need the visuals, writing and set/costume design to be exceptional to maake up for it. This looks very generic on so many levels. The creatures are just generic fwntasy giant birds, the ships look like they could have come from any recent space fantasy, the costuming is yet more desert robe future people who live and dress like it is middle east circa 1329 or WWII german military. Can we please have sci fi fantasy where things actually look... scifi futuristic? And not like some ancient civilisation with space ships and lasers. Could we also have alien planets that look alien, space visuals that actually show scale (some tiny ships silhouetted against massive planets etc) and please less greenscreen. And less sword fighting in future sci fi worlds. It worked in star wars and dune but it is getting tired now

It looks to me like a glorious, unabashed mishmash of fantasy-adventure genres. Knowing Zack Snyder I think the references to other genres that he makes will include a commentary about underlying mythic themes (a la Joseph Campbell) that ultimately tie these various sub-genres together.

I suspect that what Zack is doing by pulling from a lot of different inspirations is updating what George Lucas did for his 1977 film 46 years later. One of the most fascinating things about this to me is that George Lucas was very open about drawing inspiration from many different sources. It’s really eye-opening to browse through the full list: Star Wars sources and analogues - Wikipedia
