For me it depends on -
The impact of the character on me.
Do I like the look.
Will the alternate look complement
the main look or detract from it.
For a few examples -
I’m not in love with the design of the T-800 from T1
so I’ll likely not bite on anything besides an Endoskeleton.
So being that I like
the T2 design, a lot I might add.
As well as the battle damage being so prominently visible and having a lot of emotional importance in the film as well as in my personal life, I can justify owning the pair.
Picking up both Clean & BD
and displaying the clean in all black
isn’t as repetitive as having Cyberdyne and finale BD.
With the T-1000,
I’m not compelled in any way to get multiples to display both outfits and different accessories simultaneously.
If I get him, strictly one and done.
With something like Keaton Batman and Nicholson Joker, where I like it but don’t need multiples,
I’m starting to prefer their definitive iconic looks only as to not detract from their presence.
As Agonistes said, they don’t have to match eachother exactly respective of their films.
So I’ll likely have the new Returns 2.0 and Nicholson Joker but not an ‘89 Keaton.
Suits are extremely similar being black and yellow rubber, was thinking about getting Mime Joker, starting to decide against it and just make the best purple suit Jack I can.
With Ledger Joker the character means enough to me to own the Bank Robber, Purple coat and Interrogation looks.
I don’t see the two T-800 2.0s
like owning three OT Vaders.
The T2 T-800 is one of those rare instances for me where I love the various looks throughout the movie so much that I have/had multiple ones in my collection.
My favorite look used to be the BD look post Dyson/beginning of the steel mill. A lot of damage, including his face, but still both eyes in tact. The DX13 was a dream for finally providing that look.
But the Enterbay full BD, which I got a year earlier, was so amazing in likeness, realism and proportions, that while so similar, I couldn't get rid of either.
And the clean all-black look is just so iconic to me, I don't care that it's simply "a guy is normal clothing", something I usually don't collect. I had the MMS117 and then DX10.
Over the years of owning all three looks, I started to really appreciate the full BD look more. I sold my DX13 a few years ago, and the Enterbay remains a centerpiece in my collection. He was so ahead of his time IMO that he still holds up with figures now.
I still have the DX10 as well, but he's been relegated to the top of the Detolfs (on a fatboy) since he's rather outdated. I would love to update him, but so far the HT is not impressing me. After seeing the production version of the QS lfiesize bust and seeing the likeness that can achieved, I want that in 1:6 form. I'm hoping HT delivers and shows an upgraded version once the PO goes live.
And funny that you mention OT Vader. While on surface level they are of course very similar, I've spent so much time studying all the major and minuscule differences that ANH vs. ESB Vader are two completely looks in my (mind's) eye. The lack of weathering and proper proportions makes the HT versions more similar than they should be, though.
