Outstanding poses & shots👏👏👏👏
Yeah, think I'll pose him with arms at his sides, looking straight ahead, coz I can't match any of that :lol :clap

Overall IMO the sculpts are a lifelike upgrade to an already good sculpt. Only thing I noticed is the more "real life" eye color vs. the often all black-brown look onscreen tho a lot of those are night shots anyway. Tho I'm not versed on all the JS details.

I know for me it's a beautiful fig coz I paid a premium to get him and feel privileged owning this. Worth it.(y)

The right photography can make the new serious face look as good as the old.

Epic shot. I'd swap the serious face with the Smile though and that's a winner 🏆

I was actually able to get the DX38 for practically free (just having to pay shipping). So I guess I will be checking this guy out after all.

I hopped on the Artisan wait list too just for ***** and giggles. Even though DMTNT isn't my preferred look of Sparrow I do want to check out the hair/dread/bandana in hand. I figured if it converts I guess it was meant to be lol if not I'll just wait for the inevitable next one.

I'm just glad I was able to secure all the pieces I do want from this set with the 38. My guess is after sourcing all the pieces parted out would have come to practically the cost of the figure. And since I'm only paying shipping that's a no brainer.

Couldn't help myself, Jack through the years.

Thank you for this!

This comprehensive compilation perfectly illustrates the problem I have with the serious sculpt. Not one of these picture has Depp doing his “Blue Steel-Magnum” chiseled TO PERFECTION-jawline of THE GODS with sultry M shaped lips-CHAD SPARROW amirightguys?- and the question I want to ask the sculptor and JC Hong is: WHY DID YOU INSIST on giving him these features? As much as I prefer the DX15 sculpt, it’s guilty of having that M shaped lip too!

Whatever the sculptor was trying to go for…I can MAAAAAAYBE see the argument that he/she was going for this:

And even then, the sculptor still failed to capture Depp.

Sorry for dragging this on any further than it’s already gone on for. I love this character and wish the neutral-…‘scuse me, not neutral, ANGSTY portrait had a better Depp likeness.

I’ve said my final piece. Please carry on gentlemen! 😅😅

There is one key factor which is perspective and lighting on a face. The photos on the previous page have lighting where the face doesn't look so drawn in. I have a life cast of Johnny's face from 2001 and he has exactly that structure in the cheeks and cheekbones.

I'm happy. And appreciate the nuances from folks more well versed. It's good to know, one day, when I'm calm.

But, I spent way too much time recently staring at Viggo Mortenson's face while I struggled to fix InArt's &^%$# up hair on the sculpt I got. It's too soon to be staring at another guy's face, for hours, for me. Anyway I own all the HT Jacks so plenty to mess about with.

My tragedy :monkey3 will be trying to decide whether to switch out the earliest HT Jacks (which look like relatives) with better sculpts, or keep as is for nostalgia and maintaining the purity of the original release.

Sure, lighting and perspective play a factor.

and that’s the issue I currently have: the drawn in-ness of the portrait is visible 99% of the time under every lighting condition save for maybe 1 or 2 situations. Whereas in all 5 Pirates films, the drawn in-ness is visible in a few frames at most. IMO, that’s a big problem.

I’m sure the cast has his facial bone structure, but I think the sculptor for the figure took things a little too far and didn’t stop, resulting in a portrait that accentuates certain facial features thus affecting the likeness.

Undoubtedly pictures and motion film can’t beat a life size cast…but look back at the collage and watch the films, then compare the portrait. Tells a completely different story.

I know some scoff at the idea of asking a significant other or someone that doesn’t collect about the likeness of a toy. But they are the ones that offer the truest, unbiased opinions ever in this hobby. I can guarantee you they will have a hard time seeing Depp as well.

I always like to hear what a non-collector has to say. I ask my wife all the time.

The only thing she asks me in return is: if I say it's good, will you stop buying them?

Yes, it is that touch of "idealization" that Hot Toys puts on it... I don't know if it is so much the fault of the sculptor or the person in charge of art direction and those who make the decision. That happens since DX06 and in that portrait it was more exaggerated in my opinion, the cheeks were more sucked in and it seems that he was sticking his lips out.

So the wily Jack is supposed to have a fat face?

No thanks, I'll stick with the Dior frontman chiseled look. 😁

I'll be honest: I really don't see a non-collector finding fault with the sculpt. We are deep in the weeds of discussing jawlines and lip shape and buccal fat at this point. There's nothing wrong with caring about that level of detail if that's what draws you to collecting, but I do think reasonable perspective is required. To the average layperson, this looks like Jack Sparrow.

Well if you present the figure in its entirety, sure. How can they say it’s NOTJack Sparrow?

But show them this?

A non collector can totally say this looks exactly like Batfleck-
