Does anyone know if the hair is actually punched in? I know it was on the prototype but the prototype is silicone. The production piece is resin. You punch hairs into silicone, not into resin. My guess is they are just glued on in the prototype?

I think the head is made of vinyl and I think the method used is Rotocast
The head is hollow, and I think the ears might be partially hollow. The ears have some flex
and the head is molded in the green color, thus the ears have a translucent look, like real skin
The hair is punched in, unfortunately the ears have no hair, but users have punched hair into the ears
I think the hands and feet are resin.

The demand for The Child is low and if you're lucky you can probably get The Child for about $300 shipped on eBay and I seen them sell as low as $200

And I think the low prices is perfect if one wants to customize one

Wait, you can punch hair to a rotocast vinyl?

The head material is too hard for punching hair.. so most customizer I know, including the one that made the custom eyelids (Soulinertia, he's a pro), glued the hair to the ears.

I myself believe that the head is vinyl. Its not hard like resin. Soulinertia was the one who thought the head is made from resin.
However, I am still doubtful that we can punch hair into it.
I don't know how Mattman6886 did it, but in the tutorial video, the head was made from rubber, so it's very doable, you can punch hair to the scalp.

I've checked mine too, and the head is indeed too hard to be punched with hair.
As far as I know, for the usual vinyl dolls with rooted hair, factories make premade holes in the vinyl scalp to be machine punched with hair later in the process.
So it's not something we can do traditionally. It's maybe doable but extremely difficult.. so people/customizer usually just glue the hair to their Grogu.

I agree the head is vinyl

With the ears having some flex, I think the vinyl is soft enough where one would not have issues punching a needle into the vinyl.
The issue is amateurs will have difficulty doing this.

I think the hair is too thin and flimsy anyways, hence Soulinertia used wool strands.. I think because of that, it will be harder to punch, and the result in the ears area will not be too different as glued. Of course the punched ones will be more accurate.. but the effort is much much bigger.
I agree that the glued one took less effort, and more doable by amateurs.

Can you see those tiny holes in your pieces? When you look at a closeup hair does it look like it is punched into the head or glued?

Yes, as I previously said, upon closer look, it is punched in, but it's factory made, and will be hard to replicate because the head material is hard. If you want to add more hair to the ears, I think it would be easier to just glue the additional hair like Soulinertia did.
