I actually prefer the overall look and scale of the Toybiz version. I did the same thing and have him holding down the fort until Sideshow's version arrives...

That looks great!!
iI honestly think that this year we'll get peorders for Gandalf, maybe Saruman and Ringwraith (I hope!) towards the end of the year, maybe, we'll get announcment for Gimli.

I have one too that I was going to bash with the DiD Gimli. But from that pic he doesn't look like he'll be in scale with the SSC hobbits. I don't mind that the SSC hobbits aren't half the size of the humans, but Gimli needs to be between the humans and halflings in height.

Yeah the DiD looks too tall IMO, that's why I got the ToyBiz one, besides the likeness is spot on!! Once I get the set of axes from the DiD one, and find the right cloak for him, he'll be perfect!

I too really like the Toy Biz one, they did a super job on Gimli. He poses well, gear and cloth items look good, excellent headsculpt, he's really well done.

Yeah the best part of this one is the headsulpt and helmet, I can't imagine Sideshow making a better version.

Did you really make this by yourself? It looks like sideshow has done it! WOW!
The first one posted by ahoudini is the DiD version, mine is the Toy Biz one, I resurrected this thread 'cuz I finally got him. He rocks!!! :gimli

Great job in futzing Gimli, Kuzeh and great custom work, ahoudini. It's good to see a custmoized Gimli and here's hoping Sideshow gets to him sooner, than later.

Thanks for sharing.

Toy Biz made another Gimli before this version, from Fellowship if I remember correctly. I believe he had a braided beard instead of a molded one, and the likeness was a little different too. I've got 'em both in storage somewhere, but haven't looked at 'em for a few years. I've just been waiting for Sideshow to make him. The weapons and costume were nowhere near Sideshow's quality, but still a pretty cool figure, and probably the best one Toy Biz made from LOTR, in my opinion. I've never seen the DiD version of Gimli, but I've heard some of the weapons from their LOTR figures were pretty nice.

It's great to see people customizing and improving on the Toy Biz figures. There's a lot of potential there, as seen in the excellent work by both ahoudini and kuzeh. Those scratch-built axes are outstanding, btw...very nice job on those! Seeing these make me want to dig mine out of storage now, at least until Sideshow gets around to making him!

Actually mine is the FOTR one with plastic braided beard, they re-released him for both TT and ROTK, I think it's the best way, it would be almost impossible to accomplish that with "real hair" in masss production I think.

This is the DiD Axe set I'm getting, it'll look awesome!

And here's a larger close up pic of mine,
the detail is pretty amazing!

Great shot, Kuzeh!

I think Gimli and Bilbo were the only salvageable figures from that line. The rest were horrendous. Gandalf actually had a decent sculpt but the rooted hair and beard were attrocious.

I had most of them and ended up keeping just Gimli and Bilbo. Bilbo is too tall, though, so I haven't displayed him with the others. He would need some major surgery to get him to scale.

Thanks for clearing that up. I've just got two different Gimlis, didn't know they made three versions. I don't even remember which was which, but I'm pretty sure one of them had some real hair added to it... I could be mistaken, tho, I haven't looked at them for a long time. The molded beard and hair looks much better anyway.

Btw, where did you find those DiD weapons? I'd like to find some metal weapons for my Sideshow figures but haven't had much luck so far. Any help would be much appreciated! :D

Again, be veeerrrrrry careful with those axes, the axe head being metal, has a uber-crappy connection to the wood handle... I still need to pin mine back together... :(
