Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

Hey, I get it. That's cool. You can hate on us as much as you want.

However, there are a lot of Americans on this thread and the comment was in regards to those of us in the U.S. for whom these figures cost FAR more than even a HT or Enterbay figure. :peace

Nobody is hating. Just pointing out what the rest of the Western collecting world has had to put up with for years: high shipping and/or high taxes. Comparing the perceived value with other high-end manufacturers is fair enough, but complaining about shipping, far out. It's boring. Which is why Europeans and Australians and others tend not to complain about it when they talk about the cost of a release.

Well, I don't much care if I'm boring you. You're not the only other person on the thread. There are other Americans. We discuss all aspects of collecting here, including where to buy. 2 of the 4 releases were available from US distributors and we hope future ones will be as well. If that bores you, reply to comments which you find more interesting. That's all. :slap

I feel that because a few posters are peeved at buying stuff from the U.S., that they enjoy it when Americans are talking about how importing the BCS items are expensive. Don't forget the post from the guy in Shanghai who has to pay import fees for a figure made in his own country

It seems that way. It's called Schadenfreude.

If the headsculpt of this Tom figure turned out as well as the Matt Smith one, I wouldn't want to dream of getting the Warrior's Gate upcoming Tom Baker pre-S12?-S17 head.

I think the problem with the sculpt is that the eyes are too wide open. While it is true Tom Baker have big eyes, the way they are shown in the sculpt has him in a surprised look like this photo:

th

The gesture of the mouth makes the headsculpt in a surprised, scared look. I think a more serious and determined Tom Baker head would have bee more suitable.

Getting the alternate WGP head plus a possible painter would cost 200 more. Not to mention the body used for the Tom Baker figure looks too skinny. Sure, Tom was a skinny fellow, but his shoulders should be broader or more likely, the head is just too big.

I think when I get the figure and before the WGP alt head comes out, I will be using the WGP S18 Tom Baker's head

The "Doll Dot" in the photo really doesn't help either. Hoping it's just a bad reflection on the photo and the sculpt has a gloss iris like Eleven.

You don't see me complaining. No, not all, never.. Grrrr. :lol
Actually, if I'd set up my buying option differently, I could have bought these to be sent directly from BCS to here. I didn't think of the tax thing at the time, and the cost of postage to my dad, them from him to me, is the same as the original ROTW postage from BCS. So I'm down the UK tax overall, but I'm just pleased with these figures. OK, not so much Amy, but it will get better!
On postage, the savings I make on the 89 Batmobile more than make up for the postage I pay for BCS for the next ten years :lol

True.

I think some feel as if Americans do not import and get everything in the states, which isn't true. For someone who collects anime and Transformers goods, there are some popular websites where people pay a lot for shipping. www.hlj.com comes to mind. Even the Gundam models are expensive to import and they are popular in the states.

Transformers are expensive as well - an exclusive japanese Transformers figure that would cost 12 bucks at retail in the US would cost 30 bucks if importing plus 10-20 dollars for shipping. Don't get me started on the reissues, which are not censored in Japan.

From my own experience, I even imported a Nntendo DS game from Europe because the US version never saw the light of day - It only came out in Japan and Europe.

My point is that even Americans buy imports like everyone else in Europe. I remember people in the US spending 100 or more to buy Japanese videogame imports such as Street Fighter vs X-men; this was when domestic games were 50 and when the Saturn was dead in the states.

The current topic isn't so much about pricey shipping, but about BCS selling everything exclusively and whether or not they will use Diamond Select, a US distributor, to reduce the cost for Americans.

Schadenfreude :lol

BCS have obviously arrived at a business model that obviates them having to offer discounted figures to US distributors. They are doing what any sensible business would - maximising their own profit potential. And based on current sales of this figure, it's working for them. Instead of applauding a business strategy that will help them remain viable in a competitive market and improve their product, you're all sooki la-la about having to pay the extra for it. I come along and point out guess what, that's the norm for many non-US collectors, and you go all passive-aggressive about hatred of the US and the like :lol

I don't see any evidence its working for them at all. They haven't released a single figure under this model yet.

"Sooki-lala?" go yell at your mom and leave the internet for people who would rather talk politely about our toys. And what's passive about calling you out on hating?

I was stating that I would NOT be willing to pay the extra for many figures. It's not whining, it's the truth, and I bet I'm not alone here.

I'm sorry that you're sad about living in a can.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

I'm excited to finally have a Tom Baker doctor on my shelf.

It is really hard to say if the current business model is working for because of several reasons:

Not all preorders will be fulfilled since I am sure there will be people backing out in the next few months - I recall that the signature Amy Pond figure was preorder sold out, but now is available.

Tom Baker and David Tennant are the definitive Classic Doctor and the definitive Modern Doctors, respectively. This model could work for Doctor 1-3, but possibly not for the other Doctors. Such a model would not work on a non-Doctor character either. Both editions of Amy Pond are still available on their site.

Not all the stock for the 10th and 4th Doctor might not be pre-sold out. BCS might have hold some off for regular orders.

You are also not alone in not buying every figure if the new model persist. The reason why the two 50th anniversary figures are sold out simply because they are two of the month popular Doctors ever. Everyone wants a David Tennant and a Tom Baker figure. However, who is to say that people would spend that much for a Sylvester McCoy, a Colin Baker, or a Paul McGann figure? It is possible people would spend that much for a Sarah Jane figure, but what about Perri Brown?

There's also the edition size to consider. They can only sell so many from their site and so they only make so many this way. I wish them success, but we'll have to see what's better for them.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

Wow! Some folks on here don't like and get really defensive when a person tries pointing out some real-life observations of the bleeding obvious.

SCHADENFREUDE..? That's funny :lol

But IRONY...? That is freaking hilarious :rotfl

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

Yes, me too. Even though I live in America. :pfft:

After the day I had at work, this made me laugh out loud. Cheers.

Yeah, I know one aren't overjoyed with this Tom figure, but I think it looks great, and I too am looking forward to it on my shelf. And I don't live in the UK, or America. I'm kind of in the middle, sort of, depending upon th geography!!
But hey, those of us that do like it, what's a couple of bucks here or there in getting a great figure of Tom as The Doctor. In the end, the figure is what counts.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

Just thought I'd post these all up, again.

Please don't quote them all right away - give it a few pages.
