Oh no the old folks have turned this thread into a nostalgia trip
Turned into?
It was one from the go.
You can thank old folk Favreau for knowing and celebrating Star Wars ... :wink1:

"Jon Favreau,... said he was awestruck by the scale of the film's universe when he first saw Star Wars: A New Hope as a ten year old"

But I guess you'll always have your lasting magical chihuhuorse ride to look back on fondly.

Yeah there may be issues - the mouth has that pert-agape look and slightly wonky teeth placement (the "snarling" Endor version took that up to train-wreck proportions) but I have no ****ing clue what the hell people are talking about with the likeness on the HT ROTJ LUke. :lol It's not just instantly identifiable as OT-era MH but as ROTJ-era MH.

The subjectivity involved with preference for sculpts is fascinating - where some see it, others don't. I never to this day understand the deep love some people had for the non-BD HT Bespin Luke. I have two of that head and from certain angles it hits but it's really not strong with the Hamill. At all. The BD Bespin, as scene specific and extreme as it is, is stellar likeness-wise.

The new Mando Luke sculpt is great but has a couple of weaker angles, though has the closed-mouth that really needs to be the go-to choice for HT (to be fair Hamill does do the slightly agape look a lot in the OT, so I see why they tried.)

I agree it's a lateral step Mando vs ROTJ sculpts - to me they are about equal in likeness but the new sculpt will have slightly better apps (though the ROTJ version has pretty stellar apps) and the more desirable closed mouth. Yet it's got some CGI-uncanny valley vibes, the super-funky Rob Lowe/Toy Story Ken hair (unlikely if it will be swappable with the ROTJ hair, despite what people are assuming) and a 3/4 angle that's not quite as strong likeness-wise.
I don’t think many disagreed that the ROTJ luke looked like hamill...I certainly see it...but it’s destroyed by that goofy expression...and not to mention his face looks puffy.

They used different lenses during the filming of ROTJ, resulting in a few scenes where mark looked different from the scene before, and at times, a little unflattering, like so:

Whilst this scene is important for the story, the cinematographer made some weird choices with lens, angle and lighting, resulting in mark hamill looking...weird.

THIS is how I remember luke:

So of ALL the scenes the sculptor used as reference to sculpt ROTJ Luke...he or she chose the former two??

I mean, if people truly like the ROTJ luke portrait, that’s cool...but I loathed it. And this new HS, whilst it isn’t 1:1 exact to hamill the actor, it’s captured enough of him and more importantly it’s captured the character.

Accuracy is always priority...but given HT past attempts at luke, and coming off of the low effort ROTJ luke, I’ll take anything at this point haha.

Same here. I was nine when it came out. Loved it ever since. I've tried to collect every version of V.I.N.CENT, and Maximilian that I can find. My wallet would scream if anyone ever made 1/6 scale versions of the characters from that movie.

I've always wanted a model of the Palomino, but I've never found one.
I visited Disneyland in the months before BH released and I remember all the displays they had up for the movie. I did love the red robot soldiers, and they had one of those on display. Nice to hear the BH get a shout-out; it's not a movie anyone really talks about.

Over the years since it first appeared, the criticism I saw most was likeness - that they don't see much MH in the sculpt - but the mouth/expression does come up a lot.

But what I mean is that agape "baby doll mouth" is almost MH's default expression in the OT. So to me that makes it a viable choice for a Luke headsculpt expression, because it's clearly part of OT Luke's look, but pulling it off realistically is tricky, especially because as an expression it definitely has an aspect of goofiness even onscreen.

The Mando head has an utterly mind-blowing level of sculpt detail and paint realism but at the same time, I'm not sure if it was placed on a generic 1/6 business suited body that people would instantly say "omg - Luke Skywalker." Though maybe it's the Toy Story Ken hair throwing it off - will be very interesting to see the first people who dremel the ROTJ hair to fit this new head (that of course will probably be me. :lol)

Oh, did you just read the wiki page. :lol

Some of us are old enough to actually know that.
Nope , I remember seeing the movie trailers and watching it on HBO a year later because my parents knew better than too waste their money on trash movies. LOL!

BBTS is notable for its James Cameron, John Sayles and James Horner beginnings.
An art dept guy I knew had a huge falling out with Cameron on BBTS when Cameron unfairly took/stole the Art Director position (that had already been filled by this guy,) then about a decade later, this guy was working for him in Art Dept on Terminator 2.😬

Roger Corman's studio lot/encampment/junkpile (or whatever you'd call it) in Venice always made me nervous to go near.

I wanna see if I can either commission someone to give it hair...OR, attempt it myself...

That’s a train wreck waiting to happen =D

Since the debate on likeness is already happening: I didn’t care for HT’s ROTJ sculpt myself, and this one I think is better. What’s killing this one for me is the Justin Bieber helmet-hair. It’s really throwing off the overall look — A LOT! I don’t know what the sculptor was thinking with that. I get that the hair has to be removable for the pers, but did it have to be so high above his head…

It's nowhere near as bad as the ANH Luke though.
