Note to self: Be sure to price Greg out of Indy sculpt sale.

JK, the price should be roughly the same. :)

:lol

Good to know.

If you consider the price of an unpainted sculpt, then add shipping back and forth to your favorite painter, and the going rate for exceptional paintwork in general, it works out to be close to the same... but this way you have the head ready-to-go out of the box as opposed to scheduling a time for painting, worrying about the head getting to the artist and back again.

Now obviously if you paint yourself, then this deal is not in your favor as Pix pointed out.

I really just entered this higher end custom world recently, but I have to say as nervous as I was about the commitment, once I had the item in hand I never thought about the cash once. Money well spent. I can't say that about a number of SS or HT figures at half the price.

Unexpectedly good post from Greg. :rock

Typical, the sculpt we want arrives and it's priced so the ones that really want it can't afford it and the ones that can laud it over us for evermore. Ah well....Time to talk nicely to Toria Cassaro methinks......

That is a nice looking sculpt! Interested to see the finished paint-up on it.

In looking at that Warrior Gate Indiana head(/s?) it seems those looked like a bullseye then something went very wrong. Looks like the sculpt unravlled when it was painted and it was also a bit too small. Cautiously optimistic for a paint-up of this new sculpt.

250 for an amazing sculpt.....already painted. It would cost ya about that to get an unpainted and to have it painted that well by anyone else. Probably more.

:exactly: A custom sculpt plus custom paint for $250? That's pretty damn good value based on what I've seen, brilliant value if it's a spot-on sculpt and a top-notch paint-up. I mean people happily shelled out $250 plus shipping for HT Indy which had good boots, pants, pistol, sidebag and body - and not a whole lot else that will stand the test of time.

Haha! Makes me laugh how people try to justify the cost of these custom heads lol

Hmm.. This somewhat ugly duckling of a drawing is $9000 on eBay right now:

It doesn't even come with fully drawn shoes and the hat is also clearly cut off.

Let's look at this whole Indy business with math.

Original DX05 @ $250, so we'll value the head at $80 of that total (retail). Let's say Hot Toys sold about 5000 units, making the head-share $400,000 (four hundred thousand). Maybe it cost them $50 thousand to develop, including mould making and another $100 thousand to cast and paint. Costs still easily covered by the head-share even after accounting for a post-wholesale margin of 30%-50%.

Now let's say Hot Toys was only going to sell 50 units. Wow, they'd need to make $1000 per head just to cover development, before paying to have any painted.

Sounds like you're getting a deal at $250.

It's simple . If you do not like the price you do not have to buy it .

Of course, Supes. What I'm trying to illustrate is that what you are paying for in a large part is exclusivity.

If people are happy to pay what is being asked for something, that's their choice and prerogative. I just don't personally believe it warrants the cost.

I just don't personally believe it warrants the cost.

A point that's been made clear and a decision everyone must make for themselves, however, not something that needs to be thrown in the face of everyone else, and especially not in the face of the people producing the work. :lecture It's markedly disrespectful and of poor tact.

Nah man, that's not my intention at all. I was just countering what a previous poster had said about what you got for your money when you purchased the dx05. Surely the whole point of these boards is for people to voice their opinion. I don't think I've been disrespectful or unreasonable in anything I've said. It's not a rant, just my opinion on the matter.

Yes, that is true, but it's just a grinding that it had to happen on this particular character. Many of us have been waiting for years for that perfect Indy sculpt and now that it seems to finally be here, it will only be available to the high-rollers in the customs section. $250 for a sculpt is hard to justify when you know you could get it cheaper and paint it yourself. It's a shame and it's all because of a frankly stupid business model, one that I've been against for a long time. What it does, is discourage customizing and turns the customs section into another market place, where the custom figures are called that because somebody made them for you. It really is just like buying Hot Toys figures with a higher price tag.

For comparison look at the Connery Bond. The sculpt was offered unpainted for a reasonable price, so everybody who wanted one got it. The people who then wanted an expensive custom suit were able to get that, but if you felt it was too much for you, there were plenty of cheaper options on ebay. Now the best part is going into Bond thread and seeing all those different takes on the character from the people who got the sculpt. It's fun to see how every paint up is like a different interpretation of the character, because that's how the painter sees him. We're not going to have this with this Indy sculpt and that's why I feel a little bitter over the whole thing.

Anyway, I don't want to drag this topic out anymore. If there's one thing I've learned from this hobby, is that if you're patient sooner or later something will come along.
