One issue I've noticed with repaints of the SSC ROTLA heads are that they tend to go shiny after a while. One of the problems with customizing is you really need a degree in chemistry to figure out all the reactions that can occur between things.

Yup, I had a guy repaint mine (who is very experienced) and he primed it before painting, and all that, and it started going shiny about 3-4 months after he painted it. It was a damn fine paint job too. Really bummed me out. Happened to my ANH Leia head too, but not the Old Ben nor the ANH Luke, it's the durndest thing.

yes!! I love Trevor's sculpt. LOVE IT!!! can you measure the head... and see how many 'heads' tall he is?? I'm super curious. most humans are 6 heads tall. superhero proportions are 8. I feel that most new figures are going for a more idealized proportion.

Based off the alternate full head which is 1 3/4", mine comes out to 7 heads tall, which is still roughly the same as all my other figures. I know some figures these days have heads that seem a bit too small for the body, but I'm not sure it's enough to change that basic proportion.

Yeah that was definitely a concern before I started. Apparently no matter how much you prime or sand or seal the head beforehand, there's still a chance of something leeching out of the plastic down the road. Although I repainted my SSC Buffy and Angel heads as well a few months ago and haven't seen anything go wrong with those just yet, so we'll see...

I vaguely recall someone saying if you soak the head in rubbing alcohol (or maybe it was acetone?) for a day or so - pre-paint obviously - the shiny thing does not happen. Can't quite remember.

I've also found that a light rub with goof-off/water helped with things that went sticky/shiny after painting. Seemed to "dry" them out on the surface. Especially rubbery type plastic - like it leeched out the elastomer. You just have to be careful with goof-off though - it will melt plastic if you use enough.

I suppose I could have just made a quick casting of the head and painted that instead, but naturally that's one of those easy solutions you don't think of until way after the fact. Lol

I soaked mine in alcohol and it seeemed to help, but after a year or so the shine came up through the paint work I'd done. Not sure what's causing it as I soaked the head in alcohol, scrubbed it clean with a toothbrush (a clean one, not one I use on my teeth :lol) primed it and painted it.

But the head I painted now looks like I added a gloss coat to it :lol I'm going to spray it with dulcoat to see if that knocks it back.

Other than the shine, has the color itself changed at all? It's been a while since I've seen a pic of an affected head, and can't remember if there was a discoloration issue as well.

It's amazing after close to eight years and many attempts to create the ultimate Indy sculpt, the conversation has swung back around to the original 2008 Sideshow Indy. The one many of use have tried to replace. I've also bought almost all the manifestations of this character and still use the original Trevor Grove sculpt for my Indy.

This is the only Indy head I've ever had myself. There were some others I was tempted by at various times, but not enough to buy.

The one I would replace it with is Beastmaster's, but it obviously doesn't look like that's ever going to happen.

Well, the odd thing about it is that it happened to the Leia head which was very hard plastic, almost felt like resin, and the Indy head which was a softer plastic, PVC.

It's odd that the same shininess would affect two different materials in the same way.

I wonder if maybe it's a climate thing, just like some people have a problem with deteriorating leather or rubber on their figures after a few years, and some never seem to have that problem at all.

I just checked my original SS ROTLA Indy repainted head, and it's still "dull" after several years. I initially scrubbed it with alcohol, primed it and dull-coated it after each layer of paint (lots of Dull-cote). So far, so good. It's kept in a cool, mostly-dark room.

I hope my pictures show up. IMG_1499.jpgThey are from my phone but I really like the knock off head

The problem is the plastic that the original SS sculpt is made from, isn't it? I recall that being the problem long ago.

Yeah, I went so far as casting my SSC Raiders Indy head for my attempt :)lol) at a repaint. The cast was only so-so, so it matched my paint attempt.... but... the head has remained matte.

The gloss issue has also happened to some other repainted non-Sideshow heads I've seen over the years.

Well it took awhile, but I finally got my hands on a Henry Sr figure! And it's a lot nicer looking than I was expecting. He obviously needs a repaint and to be made a bit taller, but the two still seem to fit pretty well together. In fact I'm even tempted to put a tie around Indy's neck now (even if I never liked the look before).

Don't change a thing, that is awesome. In fact you've inspired me to dig out my old ssc raiders head and give it repaint. I'll try to post some pics when im done.

I'm looking for ideas for a non movie treasure or MacGuffin I could put in Indy's hand as a way to display a non movie specific version of Indy as a figure. Any ideas?
