As far as the next project goes, between Zoe's rifle and Jayne's Vera, I'd say, based off of need... I'd go with Zoe's rifle. Steveo's just looks odd in her hands, and it weighs a ton.

I've avoided asking this because I don't want to be a downer...but in another thread discussing digital 3D printing, it was stated that the materials used for the 3D prints aren't intended to be permanent, and that these prints should be considered prototypes for conventional casting. Darthviper, can you offer any info from your printer about this blue material?

This stuff is a UV curing plastic, it'll last just fine, and for the painted stuff I also used an acrylic sealer on top so it won't get scratched.

There's some printers that actually print in a wax material, and those definitely wouldn't last. These are fine though.

Received my pistols a few weeks back, but never got around to posting about it...

Cue Tony the Tiger, because "they're greeeeaaat!". Thank you so much for doing this, and I'll be looking forward to it and first in line if you decide to do Zoe's carbine and Jayne's Vera or sidearm!

I've got more Serenity versions of the pistol, but no more Firefly versions.

Once I do more accessories I can print additional pistols. I just can't do it until then because the cost of doing them in small amounts is too much, I have to wait until I can do a good amount of prints. So if you want a Firefly version you can get one when I do the next round, or you can get a Serenity version now.

Just found this thread and really think it's cool. I'm just surprised at the roughness of the prints. Even at that scale they should be line-free and sharp, if you went with the polyjet option - of course, depending on the machine and company. They could look indistinguishable to the full scale version.

Would it be possible to see pictures of the digital models these were made from?

I would definitely be interested in accurate scaled replicas of Mal's pistol, but the roughness is a bit of a turn-off for me.

In the first pic in this thread, I believe the two top pistols are the prints he finally got vs the prototype in the bottom of the photo.

Yes, that picture has the final quality at the top and the initial test on the bottom, the one with the lines.

This one is 57mm long so you have to imagine that it's smaller than it appears in the pictures. Polyjet is the highest quality I've found except for the places that use the Solidscape printers, but those are much much more expensive and they print in wax so it's kind of useless. Perhaps in the future I can learn how to do casting and then I could do one really high quality print to make casts from, but at the moment I don't have the time for that type of process.

I'm thinking about testing Shapeways again (they printed the one with the lines). It ended up with sharper details (I could even see the little hole details in the bolts) but with those big diagonal lines it doesn't matter, however they've supposedly fixed some things since then so maybe they don't have that problem anymore.

Just re-read my post and I certainly didn't mean do offend. Now that you mention it I can definitely see the difference between the two sets, but the top set still looks rough to me. Must be the company then, if you use the polyjet... or maybe I'm just remembering wrong and gotten things mixed up. I've just seen prints of really tiny items that are sharp and exactly like the digital model and done in resistant material, not wax.

I can ask around if you'd like.

I'm betting that other places can do a better job, but not at a good price. There's some places I've looked at that I bet use Polyjet that quoted $75 for one print. These ones I can get at a much much cheaper price. Otherwise the only option would be to do casting.
