Re: 1/6 Mal Pistol WIP Update-3/28

Yeah, me too.

I had emailed them back to see what was going on and they haven't replied back, that was like a month ago. I also contacted another place (Modeler) they got the file but haven't replied back either and it's been like 3 weeks.

It's kind of surprising how hard it is to get anyone to reply back. Since I'm sure they want the money. Kinda sad it's being so difficult since there's other stuff that I want to do as well.

I was also looking into some other services, there' Ponoko that has a more streamlined approach. I have some parts that I'm testing out with that service since it's so cheap. But I don't think it'd be good for this since it requires a thickness of at least 1mm for the entire object, I'm also concerned about detail quality since it says details can be a minimum of 0.2mm which isn't all that great.

Re: 1/6 Mal Pistol WIP Update-3/28

I'm also checking out Shapeways

They can print at 0.3mm thickness with 0.1mm detail which is much better. Pretty cheap too, like $6 to print I think I'll test that out and see how it ends up

Thanks guys

It's good I didn't take any money beforehand.

But if this turns out well enough it'll be cheaper and there won't be molding issues since it'll be cheap enough just to print it.

I thought the plastic used for rapid prototype printing was unsuitable for longterm use. A few months back I asked William Shanter's Toupee why he did not just print up each set of Catwoman's claws, as the molding was proving difficult due to the extremely fine elements in the claws. He said the plastic was not suitable. I am sure different printers use different plastics but we will obviously need a medium that holds it shape overtime, is inert and will retain paint.

I'll test how durable the print is, but there shouldn't be a problem with painting or losing it's shape. I would just be concerned about how easily the material would break.

Re: 1/6 Mal Pistol WIP Update-3/28

I think we should all just get a photo of it, make a mirror image, print it, cut them out, slap em together and bang. Done.

Of course I'm kidding
!

The issue is how chemically stable the plastic is, which will be difficult to test without waiting months or even years. You should ask about the plastic when having it printed.

Re: 1/6 Mal Pistol WIP Update-3/28

Here is a print of some parts I did from another company, probably very similar material:

It's pretty strong, and I'd imagine with something small there wouldn't be much of an issue with the parts wearing down over the years. Especially if it's painted and sealed.

Re: 1/6 Mal Pistol WIP Update-3/28

I'm still amazed at the work and detail you all are able to achieve at 1:6th. Very impressive. (I sure couldn't do it!)

Re: 1/6 Mal Pistol WIP Update-3/28

BTW guys, still working on getting this done. I send a test to get printed a while back and should be getting it very soon. The high-detail material is something new for them so they got a bit backed up. In the meantime I've also found another place that can do it as well, so if these ones don't turn out then I've got something else I can do.

What's cool though, is that since this can be printed, I wouldn't have to make a cast of one model for all the copies. So I could modify the model for a Firefly version and people could pick which one they want.

Re: 1/6 Mal Pistol WIP Update-3/28

Great news, looking forward to seeing the print!

Can't wait! Any plans to do River's battle axe and machete sword thing from the end of Serenity?
