Meh... more grass....

Hey, it may be more grass, but there's no giant gonad like the one Anakin was riding on the AOTC grass. See? Silver lining. :lol

AOTC didn't even cross my mind. Shows you how little I think about the PT.

Edited to add:

Wasn't there word that JJ would tie all 3 trilogies together? Maybe they're on Naboo!

Grass at TFA Rebel base... grass at Animal Escape from casino... more grass now.

What happened to the exotic and dangerous worlds? How about craggy mountains? Or some truly unusual landscapes that I've seen in Asia. Seems like Disney wants it easy on crew and company.

But yeah, at least no gonad-riding.

Could have been worse; Yet another desert planet...

True. I'm so tired of Tatooine.

There's just so many landscapes and weather patterns that they haven't touched on in the films. I feel like Disney has absolutely no creativity at all sometimes; their designs and costumes and choices are very pedestrian and, worse, derivative in a cheesy way (like their Apple-style Ducktroopers).

"Designed by Committee"

I agree with you 1000%. They just rip off what has come before and call it "paying homage." Its just a soulless trilogy.

You said it. I think it has to do with no real creative direction or story. Make it up as we go before the deadline doesn’t lend itself to true storytelling. In preparation for esb Vader, my 11 year old and I are watching empire right now. He out of the blue just said how dumb it was for Luke and Han to die for no reason.
I will never forget how my kids jumped out of their seats when ren killed han.
Poor guys

Well a lot of it clearly comes from a desire to have a style and aesthetic that is closer to the OT, and is more instantly identifiable as "Star Wars", after how poorly received the prequel era was by most. The problem is they seem to have copied everything too closely, so everything just looks like an uninspired rehash.

At the time I remember thinking the prequel style looked too sleek and different and not enough like SW, but in retrospect I think Lucas probably had the right idea with making everything look different and unique.

(As far as the storytelling goes though, I'll still take the ST over the prequels any day. ;))

You're forgetting who's producing these, JJ "cheapass" Abrams.
Remember his version of the Engineering section of the Enterprise? That brewery looked cheaper than the Original series Engineering set made out of wood and colored lights. At least the Warp Core in In To Darkness looked better, of course that was an actual fusion reactor with desks and lights from Ikea. :lol

The ST and anthology flicks, while better acted and directed, have nowhere near the world-building of the PT.

The PT was set in the core worlds at the glittering height of the Republic, so it *had* to look sleeker. Royalty and politics reigned.

The OT was set on backwater planets in a time of guerrilla warfare, hence it was more down and dirty. (Not to mention limited by a lack of CGI!)

I will take ordinary looking worlds with good characters (which I feel they are in the ST) over fancy worlds and terribly written characters any day. So I'll be happy to accept a prairie grassy plane since I'll be caught up with what the characters are doing and saying. Regardless, I wasn't particularly wowed by any planet in the prequels either.

You can't even claim that the OT gave us amazing new locales every outing because of ROTJ.

That film gave us:

Tatooine (again)
Dagobah (again)
Death Star (again)
Redwood forest

And while that first shot of Naboo from the original TPM teaser is still pretty spectacular to this day I agree that being invested in the characters, plot, and dialogue is MUCH more important than what the scenery looks like. Great scenery/planet designs is definitely a benefit but it's certainly not on the same level of importance as most other aspects of filmmaking.

Valerian has mind-blowingly amazing planet designs, way more impressive than the ones in ESB. But yeah, so what, a garbage film is a garbage film, lol.

Totally agree with both of you. While I'd prefer more innovative planet/landscape designs, if the story and dialogue are compelling to me, then the backdrop could look like a Wal-Mart and I might be okay with it because story and dialogue come first for me.

With that said, I will credit the prequels for being far more innovative. The look of Coruscant, Mustafar, Geonosis, Kamino, etc. were unique and interesting to look at, even when they did seem too fake (to me at least). If only the dialogue and plots of those movies could match the artistry of the scenery.

Yeah I realize that's always been the rationale, and it makes perfect sense... but that doesn't change the fact that it just didn't feel nearly as much like "Star Wars" to me, and wasn't nearly as cool or memorable a visual style. In fact it often felt like I was watching a random scifi movie at times, or something set in the world of The Fifth Element, with how incredibly busy and cluttered everything always was compared to the more barren and evocative world of the OT.

That is how I feel with the ST. The First Order their designs all look like generic direct to TV Sci-Fi designs. Same with some of the newer aliens and weapons.

I know some people found Coruscant too Blade Runner-like. I guess the PT had to compete not only with the OT but everything since.

Speaking of BR, I would've liked to see a "waste world" in the ST akin to the junkyard in BR2049 - that was epic.

Lucas' strength is in his design sensibility, alas the human element he's not so good at - which is why he tried to offload the directing gig. Sadly no-one would take it.

There were more and better planet designs in the Order 66 sequence than in the entire ST so far. As for the anthology flicks, RO and Solo looked like they were both shot on the same stretch of beach (except maybe for Scarif).

I mean , what environment do you guys want?

Tell me something that hasn’t been done?

Rural suburbs? They have hit every possible habitat.....

Sent from the inside of a giant slug in outer space.....

I'll admit, RO's Ring of Kafrene was cool. Be nice to see more of that type of innovative design.

Wouldn't mind seeing more water worlds either - Kamino was barely explored.

I find a lot of the design work (especially the one's ripped out of McQuarrie's book) really cool. Unfortunately, they're tied to some really awful narrative. Phasma appearance wise is really striking and they couldn't have casted a better strong female type to play the role, but the character is just so much wasted potential.

I could see the argument that some new biomes might be cool, but I didn't have any issue with the locales in TLJ with the exception of the dull red background of grandpa snoke's throne room.
