Depends how you look at it. Yes, the backpack does "give it away" that its Sam, but the profile of the first figure ("Frodo") does look more like Sam to me (hair shape, looks a bit plumper, but thats probably the cloak as much as anything). If anything the "Sam" figure looks (to me) more like Merry in profile.... Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the first is indeed Frodo and the one carrying all the stuff is Sam, but its not easy to make out the details (which is after all why its called a teaser...). Can't wait to see the full pictures at SDCC!! :)

I know most people are willing to accept the fact that the bodies are too tall (based on the business justification that the same body can be used for many other product lines), but there's a small part of me that still wishes they could have been done right. Wouldn't this have looked better to anyone but me?

I resized the hobbit figures to what looks more correct to me, and left an outline of the size we are getting for reference.

Robo is correct.

That is the size they should be.

But, in the end I don't think it really matters.

No, it really doesn't. But still, there will always be a small part of me that looks at them and thinks "we (LOTR collectors) had to compromise so that other lines could benefit. Why couldn't they compromise for us for once?"

RoboDad is absolutely correct. The closer they are to scale, the better they will look. And that sample pic really does show how over-sized they are...

BUT...

I'm still happy that we're getting hobbits. The line lives and now other lines will also benefit from the possibilities in new, shorter characters.

Plastic surgery is always an option. cutting off some material from the legs (thigh area) and perhaps from fore-arms may help shrink them down scale-wise. Not for the faint-hearted, though.

As for pricing, as mentioned before, $75.00 sounds about right for the Frodo/Sam two-pack... ;)

They seemed to change quite a bit in the films - I think depending on whether they used the smaller "doubles" or whether they used blue/green screen and superimposed the real actors. In the Council of Elrond Scene posted a few pages back, they used the latter and they appeared more the correct size, but when they used the doubles I think they appeared a bit taller. At the end of the day I don't mind, although I do have concerns as to exactly where Gimli will come into the equation. I suspect they compromised for a variety or reasons, the main one being useability in other lines, the other one primarily being getting the detail right at that scale

They did "change" in different shots in the films, but that isn't what I based my revised pic on. I based it on how tall hobbits "should" be in relation to Big Folk.

And Gimli is one reason that the compromise concerns me as well. My guess is that when he is released, the only height differentiator between him and the hobbits will be his helm (and maybe his boots). Gimli should be shoulder height to the Big Folk, and the hobbits should be shoulder height to Gimli.

In a perfect world I'd like them 2 be perfect but if by helping other lines means we get Hobbits fine. I want the Fellowship enough I'm willing to give a little. As I said it's not off enough to get me pissed either.

That's pretty much how I feel as well. I know compromises have to be made, and if the compromise makes getting the hobbits possible, then so be it.

But that doesn't mean that the compromise (in and of itself) thrills me, either. ;)

Hey this is great news. I'm glad I stayed with this line, unfortunately I never opened them. These hobbits should rock and I'm very interested in seeing these new bodies. This new scale can really be used for many things, maybe ORCS aren't far behind!:chew

As it will be simple to use a longer leg for Gimli, I'm sure his height will be slightly different. I always thought that shot of the fellowship at Elrond's council looked weird because the body doubles throughout the rest of the films were taller.

Does ANYONE have the 12-Inch figures from Toybiz LOOSE and can snap a comparison shot of the 12-Inch Frodo with 12-Inch Aragorn/Legolas/Gandalf and 12-Inch Gimli?

I would be curious to know if the sizes are all that different from Toybiz perspective.

Geb

P.S. Got rid of my 12-Inchers when I heard Sideshow was bringing them...

What I would be curious to see for Gimli would be to use the "short" adult body, combined with the arms and legs from this new size. In the movies dwarves seem to be portrayed as having somewhat shorter arms and legs, but thicker torsos.

But you're right, there may be possibilities that could add a bit to Gimli's height.

I havent read this whole thread so this may have already been posted. Just remember people SST is in this to make money. I remember when 21st century toys tried to meet all of the demands of the collecters, new bodies, women, foriegn troops. I think this had alot to do with the demise of there 1/6 line. Make a long story short, I dont forsee SST sinking production cost, tooling, and manufacturing into making separate bodies for a hobbit versus Gimli. Lets all just be happy that now they have a small body even if a hobbit and a dward will be the same size.

I am because it's a 12" aka 1/6 figure aka doll. If it was a fixed size statue, I wouldn't be comfortable with the size inaccuracy.

Your image looks correct and I would prefer it however if having multiple sized bodies of very similar proportions increased the cost of these items I would be opposed. If they could have made them more size accurate and it didn't affect the price I have to pay for them I would be in favor or more body types.

I'm also curious how Toybiz's Gimli compared to the Hobbits. So if anyone has any pics, hook us up. :)

A couple comparison shots I made. One show the 12-Inch scale BILBO with lines across to the 12-Inch Legolas. The other is similar shot with the new 12-Inch Hobbits from Sideshow in the teaser image:

From these, the scale looks pretty consistent from Toybiz to Sideshow. In fact, the Sideshow figures may even be a bit SHORTER than their Toybiz counterparts...time will tell.
