i don't blame them at all. i don't think you can blame them for putting it on hold if it's not making them the profit they need to continue it and if frodo and gandalf are still available then how are merry, pipin, gimli and others suppose to sell out.

Put the blame where it is due. Not Sideshow, but the fair weather collectors. Blame those who claim to "love all things LOTR" but didn't buy these figures when they were first released. If the exclusives and regulars had waitlisted before they were released (like the popular lines do), Sideshow would still be pushing out these figures instead of stamping then with the "on hold" stamp of doom.

ok. that doesn't make any sense. how is it smart to not get the fellowship out before anything else?
even if you're hiv-positive that the line wouldn't get canceled (which it did) the fellowship is the defining element of the franchise.
are you saying Gimli is not as popular as Faramir? i don't get it.

I don't think you are understanding.

You statement makes the assumption that at the time Sideshow released Faramir they knew the line was tanking.

Really the blame is two fold:

It is sideshow's fault for pacing the line so slow that collectors just lost interest (remember Aragorn and Legolas and Boromir all sold out in respectable intervals... so the customer base was there at one time).

It is the customer's fault because so many lost faith in the line. Pure and simple. So you see, the truth is somewhere in between.

:lecture :lecture :lecture :lecture :lecture

I'll also add that how the Faramir figure turned out factored into this as well. That's on Sideshow, too.

I think it's stupid to "blame" the customer for anything, since the retailer/customer relationship is not joint effort. It is the retailer's responsibility to come up with something that the customer wants to buy. That said, I think it's possible that the line would have petered out even if Sideshow hadn't made their various missteps. LOTR just isn't a hot property right now.

Hey... I have all the LOTR 1/6th figures... from the get go... it's the line that brought me to SSC, so I can point a finger and be ticked that they won't at least finish the Fellowship. To me it's like making 2 out of the 3 ghost busters = pointless.

Considering the quality of the latter releases, I'd say Faramir, good or bad, is largely irrelevant. Those who wanted him picked him up. Those who didn't, passed.

Reeeeeeeally. :lol Like all the HT fanboys who cried that if HT picked up the HellBoy line they'd definitely buy them? Yet, having happened, both figures are STILL available for preorder meaning they were shallow promises. Here you have a perfect example of a company giving the consumer EXACTLY what they requested and the consumer not keeping their word despite stating to the contrary.

I'm not saying Sideshow is perfect in the matter, but there's absolutely no denying the quality figures that are Gandalf, Sam and Frodo. They are the epitome of what every 1:6 LOTR figure should be yet fickle fans failed to purchase them after demanding them for years.

How do you know the people who requested Hellboy figures didn't order them? I certainly did. But we're only a few dozen people on a message board.

Everybody always forgets poor Winston Zeddemore! :lol

nope. it makes the assumption that fans/collectors prefer to have the fellowship before anything else.
Faramir is the kind of character you make after you run out of major characters who carry through the entire series. like, say... Gimli.
but, this is all academic since this line is done for good and SSC is just sitting on the license.

In this rare case, I actually agree that they should've gone that route with the license vs. trying to vary it up with Faramir before finishing the Fellowship. I, for one, with a complete Fellowship would've been saying, GIMME MORE! Especially if, once completed, they'd started to release the villains. Then, toss Faramir into the mix between them.

I can only speak for myself, but I have to admit that Faramir is the figure that took all of the wind out of the line's sails for me. After that I just didn't care at all until the hobbits were unveiled at SDCC '06. And that was just too long. Now, factor in how much longer it took for those (and Gandalf) to actually be released and you have the perfect recipe for apathy.

And that (apathy) is ultimately what doomed this line. And it's a direct result of some of the decisions Sideshow made (i.e. overall pacing, choice of Faramir, etc).

the pacing really hurt. it's the line that brought me to sideshow, 1/6 figures, everything else sideshow offers like statues, dios and such and also this message board but the time lapse between the figures was very long and annoying. i can understand while some might have jumped off the boat. people's attention spans are short and hobbies are expensive. You can’t get everything and people’s tastes might change tomorrow when a different property is announced.

Do you know where I learned the meaning of "hiatus"? Doctor Who. They said the show was "on hiatus" back in 1989. It was on hiatus until 2005. But then it was an entirely different group of people in charge, writing, and acting. So in effect, the original product of Doctor Who died in 1989.

Therefore, to me, on hiatus or on hold means dead. :rip

But was reborn much better and stronger in 2005! That means we only have to wait 20 years for new LotR figures! By that time HT should be making little walking/talking robots in 1/6th scale...

:lol Haha, true. But they will probably also cost about $1,000 a piece. :horror
