I think Ratchet looks better actually.

Wow. That's some engineering there. Don't own any of these didn't realise how Sophisticated they are.

Given that Rodimus is about to hit, I'll wait to get him in my Warehouse before shipping Ironhide from HLJ. Looks OK though. Some pics better than others. I suspect he'll impress more in-hand than in pics.

I ignored this line for a long time because they're deceptively simplistic at first blush. I didn't see the value for what they cost. But there's some serious ingenious engineering at play to get those vehicles to turn into such cartoon-accurate robots and keep them in scale all at the same time.

It's truly astonishing and once I got a few, my interest moved so much more towards Masterpiece Transformers than to anything else I collect (hot toys, neca, sideshow statues, etc...)

Indeed some of the engineering is just amazing! The MP line really took off into the stratosphere with official car licenses and that awesome G1 aesthetic. Some of the best TF toy engineering ever. Each mold has something special about it. Here's my video on my thoughts about each of those so called "Masterpiece Moments"! :)

Will be doing an update video soon to cover the more recent releases since MP-23.

Wow, what a great review. I wasn't really sure about Ironhide, but seeing this review got me excited about this figure. Ordered.

At first, based from the pictures, I cancelled my pre-order because the head sculpt was so off. Thanks to the video, I placed my order for Ironhide. My Pile of Loot now contains Mercenary (Shrapnel), SunSurge (Sunstreaker), and now Ironhide. I'm waiting for Spotter (Reflector) to come out before shipping my PoL.

Makes a change to be called something for reasons other than my preference of Transformer :lol

Hope you're able to get one for £70 or a bit less, I got all my FT Insecticons for £55 each plus shipping as I got in on the early bird option TFS-Express had.

Glad you like Shrapnel, I've removed all the insect legs off the back of mine as it makes it look a bit cleaner and I'm not likely to transform it again unless I decide to do a pic of all 3 in bug mode once Kickback ships in which case I can pop them back on easily enough.

I've seen all of series 1 & some of series 2 so far, it's not the best looking cartoon ever but there's still plenty of fun to be had and I'm glad I bought the set as it's been intresting seeing most of the episodes for the first time and spotting the episode specific extras that have come with the various MP figures in my collection.

The numerous animation/dubbing errors provide a bonus laugh, amongst other things I've seen yellow Cliffjumper, toy colored Bluestreak, two Starscreams talking to each other, Soundwave speaking with Megatron's voice, 6 Reflector bots in one shot and Devastator with a face that changed design within the same sequence :lol

One thing that's stood the test of time is Soundwave's voice, it's still awesome after all these years.

Lol I know your views on TF's can get some people riled up but not me you know that...we all have opinions & I still fail to see how we can all get annoyed by what someone else thinks about something.

Yeah so do I.
Hoping that I can get a grey chest version as they still seem to be around on TF Source & Robot Kingdomfor just a shade over £70 delivered but I am gutted I missed out because of the Kapow issues :(

Shrapnel is awesome, love the feel & the quality, he's a real surprise at how great he is.

Ha yeah some of G1 has aged pretty badly but it still holds such a special place & I agree the animation & dubbing is brilliantly funny at times.

Soundwave has always had the best voice of any cartoon character ever & will forever be my favourite :)

Can't decide.....Iron Hide or Ratchet...can't do both

I honestly think you can't have one without the other.
It's a hard call if you can only have one, it really is
I have a stronger pull for Ratchet if I did have to choose but I 100% think you should have both...if you can

So some might remember a few pages back I was informed by the wife that a "Surprise" had been shipped last week that was actually my birthday present from last June & today I finally got round to being able to pick it up from the Post Office & open it up & to my utter amazement she had gone above & beyond & got me this bad boy...

My 2nd FT arrival in a week & they are another knock out from them, honestly if they keep making figure of this quality then Takara do need to step up big time.
Nothing really wrong with what Takara do but recently they don't feel up to the same quality of FT offering & I think the rush to get them out at the moment & lower price points have had an effect on this.
Of course this sudden arrival of FT figures in my collection makes me even more sad I don't have any of the Dinobots now, can't begin to imagine now how amazing they must be if the cheaper figures are this awesome!

Really looking forward to Kickback & Hound now

Neil

Regarding Ironhide, what a truly amazing turn of events. The majority of in hand reviews are overwhelmingly positive, and most of the naysayers (specially at TFW) that sentenced Kobayashi to death are now in love with Ironhide.

All's cool, if my comments ever caused you to develop the sort of chip on your shoulder that caused you to repeatedly attack me via this thread over a period of several months I'd be concerned for your sanity :lol

Glad you're liking Shrapnel and congrats on getting Reflector, I'm still not completely decided which one I'll get as I like things on both the FT and Make Toys versions.

I think you'd love the FT Dinobots, which are the right scale IMO. If you look at the shot of their Grimlock prototype shaking hands with MP10 and the corresponding shot from the cartoon you'd see that it's pretty much spot on.

The Dinobots did look different sizes in other scenes but so did other characters, sometimes it was animation errors and sometimes it was probably done for dramatic effect as that happens in movies with much bigger budgets than the G1 cartoon....a good example is the first Iron Man movie as Iron Monger looked bigger in some shots than others.

I was enjoying the cartoon....and then Warpath & Seaspray spoke :lol

The last episode I watched was the one where Red Alert flipped out and did his flashy head thing, it was intresting to see how much more like the G1 toy he was drawn compared to Sideswipe, I think if his MP toy came out now he'd probably have gotten his own mold but the budget for the first carbots was much smaller as Hasui had to really push his bosses to get the budget increased so he could include the shoulder weapon.

I watched a video review of Ironhide and I really like how the face swap gimmick is done and I also liked a couple of bits of the transformation but that's about it. A friend has changed his mind on the figure so I will get to see it next time I go and stay with him so it'll be intresting to see but after regretting buying the Asia Exclusive Seekers and Tracks I really don't feel like gambling my cash with another figure I'm not 110% into.

Picky picky transformers collectors

Here's a topic I think would be interesting to discuss: why do ya'll think Transformers fans have gotten so much pickier and critical of figures in the past six years, particularly when it comes to Masterpiece and 3rd party offerings?

Case in point: Masterpiece Sideswipe was and still is heralded as some kind of picture of perfection. While no doubt a great figure, when measured by the same standards people are now holding MP-28 Hot Rod to, Sideswipe is a hot mess. Compared to his cartoon model: his chest is twice as large as it ought to be, his legs way too chunky and his backpack of kibble so thick it doubles his depth. Hot Rod is arguably closer to his cartoon model than Sideswipe ever was, yet has faced a level of criticism Sideswipe never saw.

hot-rod-vs-sideswipe.jpg

Masterpiece Ironhide has been all but panned by many people just because of a couple hip panels, when the MP-11 seeker mold has the exact same hip panels and so much cartoon-inaccurate leg and wing kibble than it's nigh unposable from the waist down.

3rd party companies reveal jaw-dropping offerings like TransForMission's Menasor, and people say they're passing because the torso's a half-inch shorter than they'd like or they don't care much for the feet.

Do we just have too many options now? Are people buying so many figures that they need to be pickier and rule things out? Has Takara-Tomy raised the bar with their Masterpiece line to the point where we no longer accept any departures from cartoon accuracy? Discuss!

Isn't he fantastic? Really haven't been able to leave that set alone since I got it in December. Here are some of the pics I took last month:

You HAD to repost those pics, didn't you?

Couldn't resist and ordered him. I guess it was just a matter of time, really. I look at other pics as well (yours being among the best, really) and he displays extremely well with the MP line (except Magnus, maybe)!

I do agree that, while he's great out of the box, TT could've better. What bothers me most is Mixmaster's tiny cab, that makes for a very tiny feet look on Devy. I'll definitely look for some 3p Add-ons later down the road. Even after all is said and done, it will, still be about 1/5 of the cost of the other 3p Devys floating around.

Will it be too much to ask to pose him next to Prime?

Maybe he is laughing at the thought of the aforementioned turncoat naysayers?

Same thing is now happening with MP Hot Rod. Everyone on TFW2005 is going bananas with the new set of pictures. He's a beautiful Masterpiece now!

Takara needs better photographers!
