I've heard this from a few others and I just don't get it.
The Insecticons were always kind of small. Not Bumblebee small, or anything, but the FansProject versions are pretty much perfectly sized next to the new MP Prime.
Why would anyone want a 12" Shrapnel?
Mind you, these are probably meant for a "Classics" collection more so than Masterpiece, but I display mine with MP Starscream and they don't look out of place whatsoever.
There are other "purists" out there but I've never heard of anyone like this... a name?
Haven't you ever heard the saying "a rose by any other name is still a rose"?
The third party names are only different for legal reasons.
Again, that's why the Insecticons are smaller...
Okay, I'm sorry, but that is WEIRD.
You are missing out on several versions which are superior to the Hasbro releases.
I can see how this might be a factor if you're a MISB collector and display the boxes, but if they're going to be opened, who cares what the packaging says? The Takara Masterpiece Primes (all versions), Seekers (except Walmart Starscream... but then Takara released MP-11 so...) and Rodimus are ALL better and more accurate than the Hasbro ones. The only exception might be Grimlock - and I'm not convinced either one is "better" per se, just different.
You're missing out, dude.
Ill answer all bold statements in order.
1)The Insecticons are about the same size as Sideswipe, Sunstreaker, Prowl, etc. Although the 3rd party figures look nice, they still are simply too small, especially when comparing it to the newest MPs. In fact, the Insecticons, when comparing them to the MP Thundercracker and Skywarp for instance, should probably come up to the missle pods of the Seekers. THey should be at least in the 7" - 8" range. These Insecticons are too damn small. They aren't even 5". That's ridiculous.
2)I'm sure you're aware that "all apples don't taste the same!" If I grew up in Japan with those names for their TF characters, then I wouldn't complain. But I'm American, and I grew up watching American TFs. The movies are based off American TF names, not Japanese ones. You may not feel that way (and that's fine), but I do. And if I do, I know others do as well. As unique as I'd like to think I am, there are many others on this planet that feel the same way but just have probably never stated it as such (for whatever reason).
3)I am exactly one of those....a MISB collector that likes to display the packaging with the figure showing. When I was a kid, I, to my dismay now, opened and played with all my TFs and didn't give a damn about the boxes. Oh how disappointed I am I did that.
Of course being a kid, keeping original packaging materials meant diddly squat to me.
I'm not saying my way is the right way or anything like that, but for me, this is what I personally want to see. BTW, I am getting my Hasbro Rodimus Prime Masterpiece today, to go along with my Skywarp and Thundercracker. Hoping to get an Optimus soon and ultimately Grimlock and Starscream MPs.
I get that one of the appeals of TFs is the ability to transform them into their respective modes, but I am more of a collector and appreciator of asthetic of art and sculpt.
In fact, if I ever come into tons of money I will actively seek a TF license via Hasbro and whoever else I need to to make the biggest most detailed TFs as statues, then have the smaller vehicle form in front of the much bigger robot form.
Im talking SS type stuff.
Optimus 24"
Ironhide 20"
Grimlock 26"
Bruticus 40"
Maybe you can see my perspective knowing this.
With all this being said though, I still give lots of credit to these 3rd parties for delving into and doing these cool figures, I just wish they were a little bigger.
