Apple said at WWDC that the iPhone 4 is supposed to have a screen that is made of a much stronger glass that is "chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic" and it's "ultradurable and more scratch resistant than ever."
...but still not strong enough to survive a 3.5ft fall.

B.S. That kind of damage isn't going to happen from a mere 3 1/2 foot fall (unless they actually threw the thing as hard as they could, then MAYBE).
I've dropped my 3GS a few times monkey2), including 2-3 times onto concrete from a distance higher than 3.5' and the worst I got was a very small crack near the bottom that would never have happened in the first place if I had a screen protector or, better yet, a case on the phone.
This was yet another Gizmodo stunt to grab attention.
