Re: Batgirl - Written, Directed and Produced by Joss Whedon

And Black Latino boys who identify as girls... and so on.

EDIT: well now that you changed your post mine makes absolutely no sense.

Re: Batgirl - Written, Directed and Produced by Joss Whedon

I didn't say he can't be black, I said I wouldn't personally buy it and that it wouldn't look good. How is that "****ed up"? :lol Batman/Bruce Wayne has been white for 78 years, it would be jarring for him to suddenly become inverted in the mask and have an ebony chin.

Same deal with other characters that have masks/cowls with part of the face exposed like Wolverine, Catwoman, Daredevil, Cap, the Flash, Batgirl etc. Contrast is a critical element in the look of these characters. Contrast with opposite features like light and dark create visual interest. That's why Batman looks best in chiaroscuro lighting where his mask is illuminated by overhead lighting..

Funny you mention contrast because an ebony chin would totally work under a yellow/black Wolverine mask or Crimson daredevil mask. Not to mention the numerous dark complexions that could provide a contrast for a cowl.

If characters like Blade, Bishop, Luke Cage, Storm, Black Panther, Cyborg, were suddenly white, I'd feel the same way. It wouldn't look or feel right.

There's alot more factors to consider if any given character's race and/or ethnicity is intertwined with their backstories.
Characters like Blade, Bishop and Cyborg could be written as anything. Luke Cage, Black Panther and Storm not so much.

For me, the only reason you couldn't do black Batman is the consideration that the Waynes are "old money" that span generations, back to the 1600s, in some instances. That being said, in terms of characterization, I see no reason why you couldn't keep Thomas Wayne the same, but have Martha be a young, African American doctor he met on Park Row.

Re: Batgirl - Written, Directed and Produced by Joss Whedon

Two of the three aren't very good examples. Both Creed and Zeddemore could theoretically be white characters, they just aren't
Shaft being part of the Blaxploitation genre on the other hand was explicitly made to be such.

Same with Black Panther. No clue how that would work.:lol

Re: Batgirl - Written, Directed and Produced by Joss Whedon

I'm sue there is a black Batman already in the DC multiverse.

There's Batwing, but he's a separate character in the Bat Family.

Exactly, Black Panther too. Not just any character can be changed without it fundamentally altering their backstories.

No casting news. People already upset about hypothetical black people. :slap

It's not racist to say this is jarring. You could put Idris Elba in there and it still wouldn't work.

You have an avatar and sig combo that shows Batman through the years. Some things have changed such as black to blue, black bat to yellow oval, different artists/styles etc. etc. but all the key elements haven't changed for good ole' Bruce Wayne. They have the same look, same basic origin and same ethnicity. If a comic, cartoon or movie suddenly changed that for whatever reason, there would be nothing wrong with people finding it odd.

The premise of your argument is flawed. It makes the assumption that all Black men are the same complexion...we are not. A lot would provide the contrast you mention just fine. Even all your examples, those crappy cosplay pics and the Idris Elba example, all assume that the Black man would inevitably have a darker complexion.

Batman is my favorite since childhood but I could identify with everything but his ethnicity but that never even mattered. I guess white guys identify with him on another level because they can identify with his ethnicity.

Wow batfan, just wow. The implications here are just horrifyingly prejudice! Why they gotta meet in the ghetto near Crime Alley, huh bro? You trying to say that's she's from there because she's black?? Can only black be from there? Why can't they meet in Crest Hill or Gotham heights? Huh? Huh? What's next, are you going to say her ancestors were part of the underground railroad beneath Wayne Manor?

I just can't even. smh

Nope. I've liked him since I was a kid because he's got cool stuff, a neat, visually appealing costume and good villains. There's nothing about Batman that I can relate to.

So as a fellow Batman fan, you wouldn't find it jarring or strange if he was suddenly black? Well okay then. I would. It would look all kinds of weird to me for the reasons I listed. And that "crappy cosplayer" is the best pic I could find of a black Batman. I don't think that cosplay is bad at all. That Arkham Origins inspired suit he made looks good.

I was the one who brought up that particular avenue of the race conversation - whether a black face works under a black cowl - Khev posted that pic of Halle Berry wearing the Catwoman mask - I never saw the film and I think her outfit design was appalling but that's beside the point - I was satisfied that yes, there being varying degrees of complexion and hers being on the lighter end - it doesn't have to be a problem on that level.

Re: Batgirl - Written, Directed and Produced by Joss Whedon

Is being White now racist today?

That's racist.

White people automatically benefit from white priviledge from birth, even if you dont mean it you are part of an oppresive system where you benefit the most. Which makes you guilty by default
It is called accidental racisn, even babies fall under it :lecture

I never said she was from Park Row. Just that she was working there. It's a reasonable expectation that a young, African American doctor might be actively involved in a lower income, underpriviedged community.

Man, look at that. The level of paranoia about racism in today's society is such that batfan felt he actually had to offer a real defence of what he said despite knowing that DiFabio is not being serious - but because others reading it might not know DiFabio was joking and they might see merit in his fake accusation.

I knew it was a joke. I probably should've added a ":lol" emoji, somewhere, but I think you'd have to be kind of tone deaf not to recognize that DiFabio was being satirical. I still wanted to be pedantic and point out the flaws in his argument, though.:lol
