Re: Batgirl - Written, Directed and Produced by Joss Whedon

I knew it was a joke. I probably should've added a ":lol" emoji, somewhere, but I think you'd have to be kind of tone deaf not to recognize that DiFabio was being satirical. I still wanted to be pedantic and point out the flaws in his argument, though.:lol
You could say a few people in the forum are tone deaf then. :dunno

Re: Batgirl - Written, Directed and Produced by Joss Whedon

All kidding aside, some here take to the race change seriously. I do. You cant go and change a characters race anymore than his/her gender after living with it for decades all for mere sake of winning some political brownie points. And thats all these character changes are, for brownie points and its BS.

There are plenty of established black heroes without changing the Caucasian ones for some alleged oppression misnomer. There is no opppression, look around you. So leave the characters as they were originated. Make more black hero movies, create new black heroes... JUST LEAVE THE OLD ONES ALONE.

Re: Batgirl - Written, Directed and Produced by Joss Whedon

Batman is my favorite since childhood but I could identify with everything but his ethnicity but that never even mattered.

Do you even want to identify with his ethnicity? I've always had trouble even understanding the concept of changing established characters' races just to win over people who share that race. Because if it was the other way around it'd be a big turn-off to me. I'd never want to see a white Lando Calrissian, Falcon, Apollo Creed, Mr. Miyagi, Roger Murtaugh, Axl Foley, Tequila, Kaneda, and so on. Even the recent RO has the races of the main cast permanently burned into my brain for those characters.

Theres no any real big mainstream native or latino or indian or asian heroes either, how come american movies do well in foreign countries as well?
How come china is such a big market for marvel? Kinda the same thing. The latino market is huge yet how come theres not as much pandering? Shouldnt the next avengers take place in argentina or something? Next iron man to be argentinian. I wanna be represented too then.....

I do wish there was more diversity but i wish for REAL DIVERSITY... like power rangers for example. Thats what i would call real diverse. Having casts of only white and black actors is stupid and feels like forced diversity because they are still not including everyone. Thats exactly what joss whedon does.

Lets be REAL diverse. None of this fake pandering diversity bull... each member of avengers could be a different ethnicity. Or have a different background. Lets have hulk be jamaican or cuban please.

For me, I think it's just a matter of diversity, and I'm not talking about diversity in the sense that "Batman is black," so, more representation, but, taking, for instance my idea, that wouldn't be a huge departure, since Martha Wayne has had an ambiguous backstory, anyway; in some instances being a Kane, in others being an Arkham; there's nothing that says that character couldn't be black and, thus, open doors for a half black Batman. Not only do you get a young, African American child seeing one of his favorite heroes represented on screen for the first time, but think of the opportunities it presents for young black actors, as well, and I feel like you could easily use the same scenario and have Martha, and, in turn, Bruce, be representative of any number of races or ethnicities. Imagine if, some day, a casting call for Batman was open to everyone, not just people who look like the character has, historically.

I'm not color blind, either, and I do get where people like you and DiFabio are coming from. Like it or not, for better or worse, history has engrained certain preconceptions about these characters into how we think of them, and race is one of them. I've just learned to stop taking **** so seriously; particularly when we've seen these characters reinvented in innumerable ways, why couldn't one of those reinventions be somewhat diverse?

Re: Batgirl - Written, Directed and Produced by Joss Whedon

Sometimes nostalgia or your first exposure to a character or thing can shape or affect your perception of that very thing.

I'm a big TMNT fan, but I grew up with the 1987 cartoon, and one of my favorite villains was Baxter Stockman, a white scientist who becomes a giant fly.

It wasn't until 16 years later that I found out the character was originally black in the comics, so even though the "real" Baxter is black, it's a bit strange for me because I still remember "MY" 80's and 90's version of the character.

Same thing almost happened to Harvey Dent in the 89 Batman, because I wasn't familiar with Two Face prior to the animated series, but Billy Dee Williams never played Two Face and I didn't even remember his name in the 89 Batman when I first saw Two Face in the animated cartoon.

Power Rangers and Rogue One were pitch perfect examples of how studios should aspire to represent a variety of cultures in genre films.

I think you're assuming that because I don't want a white Lando that I'd somehow be averse to a black Captain America or Batman. I wouldn't care. And if it allows African-Americans to enjoy those characters more then great. I just would never, ever want a non-white character to be made white for my sake as a white male. That wouldn't appeal to me at all.

The other scenario would be to cast a character with an actor of an alternate race for no other reason than said actor just oozing the "presence" of whatever character. Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin and James Earl Jones as Admiral James Greer were great examples of going that route. A fine line to be sure but it tends to be obvious when something is done for the benefit of the character and when something is done for political correctness.

Smh. Just leave well enough alone, create a new character or film one of the many that exist if you want to create opportunity or a role.model.

Sometimes you have a cast thats like 90% white actors and a couple of black actors thrown in there...
Then the director and the studio brag about diversity and they pat themselves on the back. They all smugly smile and feel so proud of themselves...

How the hell is that not offensive to anyone else?
How is that not offensive to the sjw? I never understood that.
How is it not offensive that they cannot create a brand new character but have to make black batman? Or batgirl... like if they were saying "we dont want to bother making something new that truly represents you but we will just take these white characters and hire a person that looks like YOU :) "

Never understood how they get away with that
