Re: Batgirl - Written, Directed and Produced by Joss Whedon

Smh. Just leave well enough alone, create a new character or film one of the many that exist if you want to create opportunity or a role.model.

Why does this bother you so much?:lol

Re: Batgirl - Written, Directed and Produced by Joss Whedon

Do you even want to identify with his ethnicity? I've always had trouble even understanding the concept of changing established characters' races just to win over people who share that race. Because if it was the other way around it'd be a big turn-off to me. I'd never want to see a white Lando Calrissian, Falcon, Apollo Creed, Mr. Miyagi, Roger Murtaugh, Axl Foley, Tequila, Kaneda, and so on. Even the recent RO has the races of the main cast permanently burned into my brain for those characters.

This. I have no desire for iconic black characters to be recast as white. And what annoys me about when they do the reverse is I don't think they actually are catering to black people at all. I think if they're honest about it they're pandering to other white social justice warriors, shallow virtue signalling.

Theres no any real big mainstream native or latino or indian or asian heroes either, how come american movies do well in foreign countries as well?
How come china is such a big market for marvel? Kinda the same thing. The latino market is huge yet how come theres not as much pandering? Shouldnt the next avengers take place in argentina or something? Next iron man to be argentinian. I wanna be represented too then.....

I do wish there was more diversity but i wish for REAL DIVERSITY... like power rangers for example. Thats what i would call real diverse. Having casts of only white and black actors is stupid and feels like forced diversity because they are still not including everyone. Thats exactly what joss whedon does.

Lets be REAL diverse. None of this fake pandering diversity bull... each member of avengers could be a different ethnicity. Or have a different background. Lets have hulk be jamaican or cuban please.

No no no. You've got to be careful with this. Trying to cast one of every single race/ethnicity on earth in every single movie is going to be impossible and flat out stupid in any case. At what point does it stop being about making a good movie and instead just become some extreme exercise in political correctness put on film? And it can get even more absurd if every combination of gender identity and sexual orientation has to be included aswell.

A here and there approach which doesn't always favour the same thing is the way to go about it.

Sometimes you have a cast thats like 90% white actors and a couple of black actors thrown in there...
Then the director and the studio brag about diversity and they pat themselves on the back. They all smugly smile and feel so proud of themselves...

How the hell is that not offensive to anyone else?
How is that not offensive to the sjw? I never understood that.

I think Disney's Beauty and the Beast "gay" story thing is a perfect example of what you're saying and it does seem ridiculously patronizing. Power Rangers, though, man. You had an African American kid who did a great job of portraying someone on the autism spectrum (the whole "Billy Crams Tons" thing was a little much, at times, but Billy was, ultimately, one of the most compelling characters in the film), a lesbian Latina character, whose sexuality was conveyed in a naturalistic way and who didn't conform to "loud" and "brash" stereotypes about Latin women, an Asian American Ranger, a Caucasian male, and a Caucasian female. The character development was incredibly well done, each character was thoroughly well written, and all of the performances were really nuanced. Not being a Power Rangers fan from childhood, I went in with pretty low expectations, but that movie impressed the hell out of me in a multitude of ways.

BUT I WANNA BE REPRESENTED!!!!!!!!!!!:gah: :gah:

I think if you do it like Rogue One or power rangers or captain planet then it would be ok.

Power rangers is being much more progressive than the sjw jollywood people like joss whedon and the movie is not only not doing that well but no one is giving it the praise it deserves... that goes to show you

It's easier to take an established, popular character than create a new one.

Re: Batgirl - Written, Directed and Produced by Joss Whedon

As for my POV (not that anyone asked or cares, but eh...), I'm against changing established characters, especially for them to be "reletable". I mean, most movies make their money overseas, right? That's a correct assumption if I'm not mistaken. That said, how many characters do you know that are not from the US? Now, take them and tell me how many of them have films made about them... None huh? Well, gee, that's a problem, because little Dmitri from Serbia can't identify with the American heroes, whith American Values, American names, American... See where I'm going with this?

If you want to be inclusive and diverse, well, just change everything, you coward. Don't give me African-Americans and just call it a day. Nah, I propose the next Green Lantern is a woman from Lithuania. The next Iron Man is a tech-mogul from Tokyo. The next Hulk is a German. The next Doctor Strange is from Wales. The next Ghost Rider is from Italy. That's how you do diversity. And not by taking a White American, making him a Black American and patting yourself on the back. You want me to believe that you care about "people being included"? Then don't just change skin colour and continue with your "Hero from the US saves the world for the 1.000.000.000th time" plot. It's insulting.

As for Batman, I don't want a black one for the same reasons I don't want a black Iron Man. The fact that they are rich White Americans coming from old money is a big part of their characters. Apart from that, eh, Batgirl could be black, but the red hair is iconic. Damian could have a darker tint since Talia is Arabian (although Ras was always drawn pretty white, not that it's unhard of "white" Arabians). Harper Row is already Tumblr personified. Nightwing was like, 1/2nd Romani or something back in the Pre-Nu52 U, so I guess he'd still be white. There were some Tumblr posts about Todd being Latino, but I don't remember if they were headcanons or not.

What I'm saying is, you can play with the rest of the cast, but Batman himself is locked into a very specific role. And for the record, I'd much rather see the already established non-white characters get some attention before the race-swapping. John Stewart, Icon, Steel, Spawn, War Machine (but not neutered), etc, etc.

PS: There was a universe were everyone was black, and Superman was the POTUS. Nubia was also Wonder Woman. But Batman was still white.

My 2 cents, Joss Whedon good. Firefly/Serenity amazing. DC amazing. DCEU movies bad. Joss Whedon save DC.

I'm not a big fan of Whedon. Never liked Buffy or Angel and thought Serenity was a tired Han Solo knockoff. I did enjoy his Avengers films the most of the MCU though. I think if Whedon was ever going to make a DCEU film, Batgirl would be the best possible fit, so I'm looking forward to this and think he's grown enough as a filmmaker to handle Barbara Gordon.

Also, yes, Jane Levy should be Batgirl. There should be no other option.

Re: Batgirl - Written, Directed and Produced by Joss Whedon

Interesting conversation that has developed in here....not to stoke the fires more but

The first "Frontrunner" has hit the rumor mill

The actress in question is Lindsey Morgan, known to fans of The CW’s The 100 as ‘Raven Reyes.’ We warn everyone to keep an open mind since some serious grains of salt must be taken with the rumored casting, having originated… well, it’s hard to say. Mainly, fans have drawn attention to Morgan’s own social media activity as a sign that not only is she at least in the running for the part at Warner Bros., but may have gotten that distinction weeks ago.

So Barbara could look like this:

Re: Batgirl - Written, Directed and Produced by Joss Whedon

Why does this bother you so much?:lol

:lol Seriously though. Because of principle, tradition, maybe because Im older.... Because the political so called pressure to have diversity forced upon society by a society claiming unequal opportunity, which just isnt the case. Theres no genuine reason to do it and its just for the wrong reason.

Its 2017, its not like it used to be and hasnt been, especially for the SJW millennials who only protest because its "cool" based off stories theyve heard and no real experience. And ppl (weak ppl) respond to this JUST to make it go away, but it doesnt.

My occupation puts me in the middle of politics and racial agendas, and I see the biased treatment, reverse discrimination in a community that clearly dominates but just doesnt know when to quit, it just takes and takes and forces unnatural progression. And you can blatantly see the racism by a race that always claims to the victim of racism.

So, when you take what I consider my escape from reality and you ****** with it by bringing in unnecessary politics just to appease some false sense of oppression... it pisses me off.

Like I said, and contrary to anothers "its just easier to change the race", there are PLENTY of established minority heroes out there to bring to light, have diversity in hero films and publicize and make the role model, sending whatever message you want. You dont HAVE TO change white to black, it comes off as a deliberate power struggle to do so.

Re: Batgirl - Written, Directed and Produced by Joss Whedon

Yup reason why I don't like the miles morales character to much. People don't care about story anymore they just want to make a huge deal and get people talking.

People or " fan" of miles character only like him cause he's black and that's basically it and when they say **** like Peter is a boring character it pisses me off to no end. Miles has no stories that are remembered nor is he all that interesting. He's just black Spider-Man. Nothing really stands out about him.

I like diversity in the genre but I feel like story should play an important role first . If you make a character that was supposed to be white another race how does that affect the story? They just want to get a rise out of people.

Create original characters with great stories to tell. Don't piggy back on another characters success. I hate that. Especially with marvel.

With that being said though I wouldn't mind if secondary characters like batgirl were another race cause it would make them a bit more interesting.

You totally contradicted yourself here, 1st tier or second is irrelevant.
So to be white is uninteresting while being a "minority" isnt?

Lets take the AA, Latin, Asian whatever fans/members here, they love the referenced established characters as they are... white. So why change? If they didnt like the characters as they were created, they wouldt be here, they wouldnt be fans.

What if I said, hmmm lets take Black Lightning and make him white, hes just boring as black, hed be more interesting as white and there'd be more contrast with his suit.... Ridiculous right?

Btw... BG is WELL established, since 1961.
