I guess this is what people mean when they say that they feel Superman can't be done as he used to be done in the comics. But the key about Superman, that is highlighted in the Donner film, and is at the core of stories like the Nail and Superman: Red Son, is that he is raised by farmers with good, more "traditional" values. In the comics, the Kents don't tell Superman he should let kids die in a bus crash, commit suicide, or stand in front of rock piles blathering on about who can remember what. They teach him to be a good person, and to take care of others. To say his prayers, take his vitamins, and be a true Hulkamaniac. Without this, Superman would be corrupted by his power just like any other man would. His upbringing is what keeps him from being the Justice Lord.

From that perspective, there is a very strong parallel to Cap. Is the WWII-era optimism of Cap different from that of a post-Watergate-era Superman? Sure. But the core ideas are the same, in the sense that both are optimistic, selfless, and have a strong belief that doing the right thing is a duty and privilege really, given their gifts. Representing an American ideal. And so the way Cap is represented in film really is more how Superman should be presented in my humble opinion.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to jye4ever again.

Agreed on almost all counts, but I still think that idealistic person would be a hard sell to modern audiences without a compelling and credible background like Cap's. Which, I believe, works because he is set on that time frame. I don't think american rural upbringing would be credible nowadays.

Saw this today. I enjoyed the Metropolis fight from Bruce Wayne's perspective and I loved the last 40 min or so starting the Batman/Superman fight until the end..........the rest was fairly boring and forgettable.

As much as I love LOTR trilogy, these superhero movies (which only half are good), some war movies and the return of Star Wars (I think) I would have to say that the past 20 years (1996-2016) simply can't touch the staying power of 1975-1995!

1975-1995 just can't be touched when it comes to movies and music.

Oh well, at least the collectibles have improved. :lol

The movies might be debatable but the music was hands down better from 1975-1995.

OT, Exorcist, Die Hard, STM, Batman 89, T/T2, John Hughes, Conan, Thing, F13th1, Halloween1, Raiders, Alien, Aliens, True Lies, Werewolf in London, Day of the Dead, Airplane1, Jaws so on and so forth are not debatable. :lol

I would like True Lies stricken from the record please.[emoji38]
There are plenty of movies I'd add to that list but for the sake of argument I'll make a 1996-2016 list.
LOTR trilogy, Iron Man, The Dark Knight, Winter Soldier, The Matrix, The Avengers, ID4, Gross Pointe Blank, Coen Brothers! and so on and so forth, debatable[emoji38]

I would also like True Lies stricken from the record, but while we're at it, can we iremove Matrix as well?
