According to imdb.com Del Toro was originally cast as Darth Maul in TPM:

He was originally cast as Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999). After the majority of the character's lines were removed from the script by George Lucas, Benicio left the project

Did anyone know of this?

It's not true, just more IMDB foolishness. In the original TPM script, Maul had maybe 2-3 more lines.

Many many... years before TPM, I read in a Chinese paper reporting that Lucas had Jet Li in mind for "Boba Fett", eventually it more likely became Jango in AOTC. That was before the western world ever heard much of him.:google

Speaking as someone who used to work for a branch of LFL, I could tell you casting rumors that would make your head spin. Del Toro, Jet Li, all rumors.

Does anyone know if this girl was ever considered for Padme? I have a reference book with a costume drawing for Padme and the model was very obviously her. Wonder if the artist randomly picked someone to draw or if she was in the running.

wow, she is 10 years older than Natalie Portman. I thought she was about the same age. She looked really young in The 10th Kingdom which was released in 2000.

The problem with the PT acting is not the talent, but Lucas' total inability to direct those without much experience (especially in these types of movies). It's no coincidence that the ones who came away unscathed or put in solid performances were all older (with the exception of Ewan McGregor, who was part of the younger cast but is just an exceptional talent all around).

That is true , Hayden was really good in Life As a House. I guess standing in Green Room with green people can affect your acting as well.:lol

Lucas is a brilliant film maker, but he doesn't handle actors well at all. Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hammill seem to say a lot of unflattering things about him as far as their working directly with them.

Even a little thing like Lucas insistance on not having the names in the opening credit shows how little importance he thought they had in the overall film.

Good. It would have distracted from the experience.
