well...

I always step forward and say that anything that can help renew interest in the old Universal Monster films is good.

That being said, I also think Universal doesn't put much thought in these projects.

I was really excited for Van Helsing, and I feel really badly burned. I fully expect to hate the new CFTBL movie, and I imagine that Wolfman could stink too.

Still, I hope the movie does well. We fans need new blood.

as for Del Toro-- never seen him in anything, but his IMDB pic looks a touch like Chaney.

I would like to see a movie, if not the Wolfman, filmed in b+w just to see if they could capture some of the older feel of some of the classics.
I think Tim Burton's Ed Wood is one of the best examples of a modern movie in b&w that captured the feel of an old classic. Sin City is more of a stylized b&w. The blacks are really black and not grey. They made it look just like the comics.

Del Toro really is a bit of a chameleon. I'm a big fan of his work, but it was his performance in The Pledge that blew me away. He's only in it for about 10 minutes and it's scary. I didn't even realize it was him until I read the credits. I think he'll make a hell of a wolfman.

they seem to have a director

Romanek is going to make Benicio Del Toro howl at the moon in Andrew Kevin Walker's THE WOLFMAN!!!
Hey folks, Harry here... In recent days we've had a lot of fanboy disappointment. Bad news on beloved projects turning from wet dream to clean-up on aisle 7. Well - today - a project that I've been VERY JAZZED ABOUT... Andrew Kevin Walker's THE WOLFMAN - the Victorian Period retelling of the classic Lon Chaney Jr THE WOLFMAN... starring Benicio Del Toro as Larry Talbot... well - it got its director... MARK ROMANEK.
You probably know Romanek from his amazing Music Video work - or the too few of you that saw his wonderful ONE HOUR PHOTO... you know him from that.

Over the last 3 years, I've gotten to know Mark Romanek quite well. We keep similar hours on AIM - and in numerous IM conversation he's exhibited quite the disdain for CG. Mark is an old school director - professing a desire to make films that are captured by a lens capturing the light and shadow in front of it.

I am SO happy at this reveal from Universal. It shows a real vision, by going with a director that absolutely keeps it real. From reading Andrew's script - I can't help but think that this will be an R-rated affair - and with Mark directing Benicio... I imagine the torment and torture of this cursed soul to be laid bare on screen... and I hope the transformation will be practical. I'm going to try to get Mark to talk with AICN soon about this. Because this is the most exciting Horror project out there for me right now.

An A-list horror film that is classic, violent and sexy without being just a nonsensical mess of CG. At least that's what I hope Romanek directing means!

Reading some of these posts makes my stomach turn because it reminds me of when the Transfans (fanatics of Transformers not Transvestites) were belly aching over a live-action Transformers movie and how it was going to suck, even before it went into production. What a few of us said to them, and I'll say to you guys, perhaps you should reserve judgement until the movie comes out. Have other people, or, I don't know, yourselves, see this movie before you knock it, and you may find yourselves potentially liking it. Or you could very well hate it. Either way all of this hostility towards something that isn't even physical yet is unnecessary. You may even find yourselves liking this movie when you see it, which would end up making some of the things said in this thread seem down right silly.

We don't know anything about this movie, but the information given (which is miniscule), how the werewolf will be executed, how grand, or not so grand the sets will look like, and how the screenplay will turn out. So on that note, sit back, calm your nerves, enjoy a crapload of movies that are coming out in 2007, and if necessary, take your medication. *hehe*

To fill the void of the new Wolf Man coming out, go see some rip roaring fun of Blood and Chocolate. It'll be a movie to surely remember. Even the title gives me the shivers. Uwwww Blood and Chocolate.. spooooky!

Have you ever seen 21 grams or Traffic?

Yes, I would take Benecia Del Toro's acting over Lon Chaney Jr's. Having said that, I respect what the Chaney father and son team have done for monster films in general. While I wouldn't say his acting was amazing, or mind blowing, it was quite good considering the era and what the movie was...And this is coming from a fan of the old black and white Universal monster films.

Just curious, but is the 3 DVD set worth buying that comes with the 3 SideShow miniature busts of the big three (Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolfman)... Like how are the quality of the busts and the quality of the DVDs themselves? Also, does anyone have any pictures?

i'm all for remakes of classics but ONLY if the remake has something above and beyond to contribute. in alot of cases, the remake puts a stain on an already great movie. i like del toro and i'm hoping this one is a winner.

I was just thinking about this movie a couple of weeks ago. Cool to hear Baker is on board.

I think it will be his best performance since "License to Kill." He needs to make another Bond movie...

I really like Benicio Del Toro so I'm excited to see what will happen.

Although on a humorous note I was initially thinking of Guillermo and trying to figure out why Wolfman would be so hefty:lol

Good news for this project--the makeup will be created by the legendary Rick Baker...

That's great news!! On the other hand, I can remember reading the issue of Famous Monsters of Filmland where a very young Rick Baker first got some notoriety for his amateur makeup he did on himself. His picture (in makeup) was printed; I can't remember if he won some FM contest or just sent in his picture... I think it was an issue numbered in the 30's or 40's! :monkey4

That picture convinces me that Del Toro is the right actor for this film. He could probably pull it off without any makeup.

And by the way:

Universal has taken Mark Romanek's The Wolfman, starring Benicio Del toro, off of its November 12, 2008 date and pushed it back to the spring of 2009.
