That's why I love this painting so much ---

It really makes me think about what Vader must have been thinking at that moment.

Just wondering ,if Lucas had released the prequels during the Eighties, immediatley after completion of the OT, would they have been different stories carrying the momentum of the fresh OT?

I don't think he could have kept up that level of story-telling and creativity for too long. Who knows of course, but I do think that a 2nd trilogy starting in the mid-late 80s probably would have been way better than the prequels. I suspect that Lucas's creativity and level of self-delusion have probably gotten worse and worse over the years. But I figure anything made during that time would still be way worse than the originals.

After all, that is arguably the greatest film trilogy ever made. He set the bar pretty high with that.

Interesting thought. While not as "grandiose" in CGI, I really didn't see anything in the PT that couldn't be at least implied via practical effects if he'd gone that route. The Gungans could've just been actors in costume and the droids could've been achieved the same way ILM achieved the army of Endos in Terminator's future scenes.

And as the guy said in the reviews, "Art through adversity". Because the technology wasn't quite there in the late 80s, Lucas would have been forced to come up with more clever solutions to the set pieces, and avoiding some outright. It may have also forced him to focus a little more on the story in order to get some of his ideas across instead of throwing everything up on the screen.

I don't think the Gungans would have been included in a late-80s prequel trilogy to begin with. I think Lucas had to have a pretty bizarre idea of what was good or made sense to think that including that race in the story was a good idea. Like I posted above, I think it probably took some time compounded with an increasingly heightened sense of his abilities (the impact of Star Wars only grew through the 80s and 90s), and isolation from real outside criticism for him to get there.

QFT, a more restrained Lucas would have made for a better trilogy.

I actually enjoy the PT films, but those videos were hysterically funny :lol

I agree with most of what he said, although I never really think about it when I'm watching the films myself. I just switch off and enjoy the music, lightsaber fights, VFX etc. Some parts of the stories work really well together.... but they're never gonna be considered 'great' story telling.

I still like them all though.... and I won't apologise for that :p lol

I always felt that the TPM was just Lucas saying " Look at what I can do visually" There was so much going on in that movie.

I enjoy the EU stuff more than the PT. Not to say the EU doesn't have it duds

Watching Phantom Menace now on Spike and I am picking up on a lot of his points. A few are definately twisted to make it seem he is right but others are definately true.
