You really need to know more about Lord of the Rings and that world before making comments like that it was empty.

I guess he didn't like how empty it was anytime they walked from place to place? But that is pretty much any movie that is like Lord of the rings, I think almost every movie has that "Empty" feeling,

Both series are squarely on the shoulders of the main hero of each flick. Froddo and Luke.

"I'll never turn to the Dark Side." > "The ring is mine."

Star Wars wins.

. . but Luke made out with his sister . . .

Damn. This is tuff, I'm gonna go with LOTRs. Even though SW is just as close, certain things put LOTR over the edge for me.

I think they are more polished films, but the Star Wars films (particularly the first two) are better made in terms of being better stories of genuine human drama IMO. And you do need to factor in the times and budget into these things. Lord of the Rings seemed to have free reign to do nearly anything they wanted to. That ranges from the visual effects to the actors to the locations to the reshoots, etc. They had access to fancy digital film enhancements that could be made to make the picture look and sound better than anything that was possible in the 70s and 80s. But were the performances really better? Did the story more effectively unfold? Was the drama more effective? I think that is very debatable.
You could take all the special effects out of LotR and I still think it's better-made.

I felt a much stronger connection to the characters..they seemed to have more depth and development. Acting was definitely better as well. The weakest acting in LotR was from the guy who played Samwise imo. Liv Tyler may have had a few weak moments. Everyone else was pretty close to perfection.

But in Star Wars, even some of the more important characters slipped up a little. Carrie Fisher a bit, and especially Mark Hamill.

^ Someone mentioned the score...I've always thought of Lord of the Rings and Star Wars having the best scores of any film. But still, LotR's score is more powerful and feels like it had more thought put into it.

Good post. I went with SW. I love Lord of the Rings and I love what Jackson did with them. I felt the books were brutally boring. The movies are beautiful and had a really great story. I just feel the SW universe is a little more textured and interesting. And I just enjoy them more from the characters to the designs to the story.

WTF?:panic::lol

Nothing will ever take away the awesomeness of sitting in the theater back in '77 when I saw Star Wars for the first time.:rock I was lucky enough to see each movie of the original trilogy twice in the theaters. Star Wars was a huge part of my childhood and it's still very important to me.

But I like LOTR more. It goes back to when I read The Hobbit back in 5th grade. After that I couldn't wait to read The Lord Of The Rings. It was a dream come true to see it come alive on the big screen. There is also more of an emotional attachment as well since I saw The Fellowship Of The Ring with my Wife while we were dating. And now I get to bring my 7 year-old Son (who loves LOTR and Star Wars) to see The Hobbit.:yess:

LotR based on merely story line and originality alone. If it weren't for LotR there likely wouldn't even be a Star Wars.

I always see Star Wars as the plagiarised Sci Fi version of it anyhow.

I think the little imperfections give those characters some humanity and realism, which enhances the dramatic power of the movie. If it isn't there, it feels artificial, if there is a little, it adds to the film, if it is too much, it is distracting and unprofessional. I think Jackson tried to make it seem "realistic" in some places, but it never felt as genuine as it did in Star Wars. In LOTR the "perfection" you talk about is something that holds it back IMO. Even when Gandalf is battered and dirty, he's still proper and polished somehow. Same with the troll guy with the axe. Seemed too well rehearsed, like he's in some play he has done a thousand times and he is very capable, but really going through the motions. Sean Bean was probably the best acting performance in the series IMO because he avoided those trappings, but of course, he was only there for one movie. Viggo is also very good at that.
