One could argue the same about the hood flipping in Star Wars.

Star Wars watch the movies - LOTR read the Books
You really need to know more about Lord of the Rings and that world before making comments like that it was empty.
IMO the only truly good star wars movie is the empire strikes back. It is quite evident that it wasn't directed by Lucas. Star Wars was good but not great and Return of the jedi was terrible. The jabba cantina scene is terrible and the ewoks... Ugn.
The prequels are not even worth discussing.
I honestly am more in love with the idea of Star Wars than it's actual canonical films have delivered. I believe this is likely the case with many as well. The quasi budhist religion, the manipulation of the mystical force, the lightsabers etc... I think the expanded universe is far greater than any of the films have offered.
Lotr are better films. Better actors, better cinematography, better special effects, better pacing etc... I give Star Wars the better soundtrack even though Lotr is no slouch either
Better pacing? The first LOTR is the first movie I ever fell asleep to trying to watch for the first time, let alone the second and third time I fell asleep trying to watch it.
The 1st movie is always slow as you have to introduce the characters
LotR is awesome...but still pales in comparison to the force of...
thats right Hobbit lovers... Galactic Swagger
LotR are well crafted cinematic masterpieces, no doubt, but they also benefit from a plethora of amazing source material. While Star Wars may not match up in direction or acting, I think they stand as a much larger accomplishment is film making and cultural impact. Plus, I just like them more.
SW > LotR
The sense of sheer nostalgia I get from hearing the opening horns of the Star Wars theme blows anything I get listening to the LOTR soundtrack clear out of orbit. Hell, Williams' score is so ingrained in the world psyche that I'm willing to bet most instantly thing "Star Wars" when they hear 20th Century Fox's end theme during the searchlight logo sequence.

Star Wars wasn't slow! Actually, there was action from the start!
Read the books, read the RPGs, watched the movies... World is still empty!
What I mean is that in a real society, people reproduce and then spread once their supply area becomes too crowded! That's what the human race did from the great rift and spread through Asia and Europe, little by little, with villages pretty close from one another!
In LOTR, you don't have a very realistic demographic! Take the fortified cities for instance. No villages around, no farmers in the fields, so much so that I wonder how they manage to feed their population!
As far as fantasy world are concerned, Howard got it right, Tolkien? Not so much...
That said, I repeat, these were great movies...
WTF?
Why is this even close?
The STAR WARS Trilogy is 100 times better than LOTR!I don't care how many Oscars were won, blah blah blah!
Better story in STAR WARS and it was told better!
Why didn't the eagles just fly the ring to Modor and let Frodo drop it in?
