I don't care what you think about The Phantom Menace as a whole, but the sight of Maul just outside the Theed hangar was one of the greatest introductions to a battle in the history of cinema.

That Duel of the Fates "dun dun" right as the doors open gives me a chill every single time. :)

:maul

And in case anyone is wondering I watched the Maul/Qui-Gon Tatooine duel in slow-motion last night and Maul isn't wearing the droid control bracelet during that scene. So at least if you decide not to get the accessories you can still have a screen accurate Tatooine duel (assuming you have exclusive Qui-Gon of course.)

I think Maul looks cooler with the longer robes-just seems more dramatic. As for the bracelet I would never had noticed its absence (if it is indeed absent from the figure). Newsletter tonight! :rock2 :rock :rock2

I am excited to see the official announcement from Sideshow - should be good. Dusty did meantion the inclusive editions - wonder if we will hear on more than just Maul tonight....!

If Maul's robe is a little too long then it's only a minor thing and it wouldn't take anything away from the figure in my eyes, but there's plenty of time for Sideshow to make some adjustments before it ships so it may well end up being spot on. Darth Maul is my most wanted figure from TPM and the early glimpse we've got seems to indicate that Sideshow have the definitive version of the character in production :D

Well, one cool thing is it appears that SS will be giving you a chance to pose Maul with several different Lightsaber variations so you can match almost any scene from TPM. Heck, with the robe you can match a couple other scenes as well. I just hope he arrives say around Oct for a nice B-Day gift to myself.:maul

I agree, and I thought TPM was by far the worst of the PT.

No way. (not to derail the thread or anything)AOTC is definately the worst, hands down IMHO. :emperor

Oh boy, I don't know if its possible to keep the thread on track at this point but I'd have to rank TPM above AOTC as well. AOTC takes some effort to sit through beginning to end but the Jango sequences and finale on Geonosis are spectacular.

TPM was more expirimental in its inclusion of Jar Jar, little kids, and a lack of "roguish" characters. It didn't all work, but I can respect the risks that were taken and the reasons for them. Extra points to Lucas for assessing the end result and plotting Episodes II and III accordingly.

That being said, since TPM sensibilities didn't come into play in ROTS I can appreciate it for the divergent entertainment it offers that it does so well in many regards. The entire opening half hour is thoroughly enjoyable, amazing locales are introduced as is a fantastic new villain, and it just flows nicely into the expertly edited end battles. Can't say I'm a fan of Anakin's "Wooooo!" when flying out of the hangar but the rest of those sequences are fantastic. And yes, I even like Jar Jar. Not saying I wanted more of him in AOTC and ROTS, but in his element (TPM) he was fun to watch. :chew

I just received my issue of SWI in the mail. It's nice that they have the PF Luke/Yoda in there, too. There's also a good interview with Ray Park and a step by step guide to using Maul's lightsaber. Almost like it was just for Josh. :D

TPM would have been a great Star Wars movie IMO if they had just totally removed Jar Jar and maybe found a better kid actor to play Anakin "Yiiiiipppeee".

Other than those 2 I really enjoy TPM. ATOC had parts I really like a lot and then there is the carboard "love" scenes, but overall I like the movie. I rate them even because they both have parts I really like and parts I don't care for at all. Overall, it's STAR WARS so I don't complain!

You said it right KitFisto... those 2 things would have made all the difference. I am in the camp that feels AOTC is the worst of the series, there just isn't a lot of substance. Sure there is some really cool stuff and I overall like the movie, but it just doesn't have the same magic that the others had.

Off-topic - AOTC has only one thing going for it - the awe-inspiring Yoda vs Dooku duel. For that very short scene alone, the movie is worth watching!:D

I dunno, I really like the entire movie after Mace shows up at the arena. I like Anakin going after the Sandpeople and a few other things, but yeah, after sitting here trying to remember what I liked about it I have to put TPM as better than ATOC.

The "magic" to any of them is questionable at least for me, but let's keep the thread going .... there are a few more hours to newsletter time! :chew

I guess what really leaves me soured on TPM, is just how toned-down it feels. Like it was written for 8 year olds, the majority of the film just seemed as though it was pitched for Jake Lloyd's buddies (you know lil' Greedo). I hated Jar-Jar and all the Gungans, the two-headed Danny Bonduce announcer, the "fart" jokes, it was just really silly.

That said, the saber scenes with :maul are excellent!

At least with AOTC it seemed more geared-up, the story was thin, but it didn't bother me after TPM.

Nah its got more than that. I'd rate it sixth in the series but that scene with Anakin bidding farewell to Padme to go look for his mother was first rate. And Lucas actually did a really good job casting the kid who played young Boba Fett. Then there's the clone battle, droid factory, arena, a lot of cool parts.

There really isn't any film in the saga that I dislike.

Thats just the thing. It was written and pitched towards 8 year olds (George was anticipating the 8-10 year olds being 14-16 year olds by the time ROTS came out and we all know the buying power of that age group... Some of you here may belong to that age bracket.... Quite ingenius really from a $$$$$ standpoint).

I would take an army of 1,000 Jar Jar clones over having to sit and watch those love scenes... But I loved AOTC as well. You're all right. Lots of memorable moments. Its just the one I enjoy least :monkey5

I have to chime in here...

Let's face it, just the first half hour of ROTS bests either AOTC or TPM.

TPM dragged -- other than the podrace and a seconds-only Maul/Jinn fight, there wasn't much else action-wise in the all-important second act. Even the Naboo invasion was off screen. The only thing I ever hear about TPM here is how cool the Darth Maul fight was at the end. And you're right -- that's all there was to this movie.

AOTC was better paced with action beats sprinkled here and there -- speeder chase, Jango fight, asteroid chase -- but not much going on between those scenes. The last half hour rocked -- arena battle, Jedi fight, attack of the clones, and the finale with Dooku.

Comparing AOTC to TPM is a hard call. For me, I think AOTC is just a more watchable movie simply because the action is spaced out a little better. But once you throw ROTS in there, the other two pale by comparison.
