No offense taken, Josh. But we've had this discussion before. In your view, placing any focus on the value of a collectible taints what you think should be the only reason for collecting, namely the love of the subject matter. I just disagree. Of course I love the subject matter, but I don't think appreciating its monetary value or rarity in any way takes away from that. If anything, it only enhances it for me. Knowing that I have something rare, and to an extent, unique, makes it a far more prized part of my collection than something that a) takes no effort to acquire, and b) no one else wants, because they already have one.
A while back (I don't recall if it was in this thread or another one), someone posted a little imagined conversation between two friends, which implied that one person would look at another's collection as insignificant without certain characters.
The way I see it, now the conversation might go like this:
Mike: "Hey Jim, check out my Star Wars Collection! Here's Darth Maul..."
Jim: "Got one..."
Mike: "Well here's my Darth Vader!"
Jim: "Got one..."
Mike: "Well, how about..."
Jim: "Got one (yawn)... Dude, I already have all of these.
Everybody already has these."
