Re: Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier

Fans might be a little disappointed or worried that Hugo Weaving doesn't want to return as Red Skull, but when it comes to the sequel Captain America: The Winter Soldier, that doesn't seem to be a problem. Aside from what villain the title implicates (we talk a little bit about that in this post about Anthony Mackie playing Cap's sidekick The Falcon), it sounds like another bad guy will give Steve Rogers a run for his money. Comic Book Movie noticed a Twitter update from radio host Matthew Aaron indicating that Warrior and "Prison Break" star Frank Grillo had tested for the villain role in the upcoming sequel. More below!

In addition to his own vague update, Aaron also sent a reply to comic artist Brian Michael Bendis saying, "Have it on reliable authority that Frank Grillo is THIS CLOSE to getting the role of Crossbones in the Marvel movies." But a rumor from a radio host twice in one day hardly constitutes a fact. But this bit of news was corroborated by the actor himself. In a Twitter update that has since been deleted, Grillo said:

"See Ya LA. It was a a good trip. Marvel was a lot of fun. Be cool if it works out. #CaptainAmerica."

Grillo is getting a lot of great roles lately, including small parts in End of Watch, Gangster Squad and Zero Dark Thirty. He would mark the second somewhat lesser known actor to get a big Marvel villain role after Tom Hiddleston took on the role of Loki for Thor and eventually The Avengers. This would undoubtedly boost Grillo's career to great heights, and if he's as close to getting the role as the above source indicates, we should have an official announcement soon.

So who is Crossbones? Well, funnily enough, he's normally a henchman of Red Skull. In the comics, he was behind the assassination of Captain America. Since it doesn't sound like Red Skull will be back for the sequel (unless Hugo Weaving is really good at misdirection), maybe Crossbones ends up being the sidekick of The Winter Soldier? It's hard to say, but the cool thing about Crossbones is his role in Marvel's Civil War storyline. Maybe that epic storyline will be part of Phase Three of Marvel's cinematic universe? It's a longshot, especially since a bunch of characters in that storyline are at Fox, but we can dream. Either way, it sounds like Cap will be tangling with a couple of villains this time, so stay tuned.

Re: Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier

I don't get how they'd pull off a Civil War storyline. There's no need for the government to track the secret identities of the heroes given their identities are all public. :lol So that kinda negates the "Registration Act" that causes the whole Civil War storyline.

Yes and no. Iron Man is public, maybe Captain America. But Thor and Hulk probably aren't. They definately need MORE characters before they can tackle Civil War. Its really too bad Spidey, X-men, and FF aren't part of this universe or else I'd say they could easily do it. Spidey and the FF were pretty front and center during that storyline. I think Civil War would make a better animated movie or part of the Avengers cartoon series. I thought it worked well for the video game.

Re: Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier

The Marvel movies have done little to nothing with secret identities. A registration plot line wouldn't work with the group that's been established so far. Everybody is already pretty much on a first name basis.

Tony's public. Steve Rodgers is likely documented as Captain America on any and all the toys, comics, basic Cap merchandise, etc. Banner's always hiding so it'd be irrelevant to know or not know and even if you did, would you really risk dealing with Hulk to expose it? :lol And unlike the comics, this Thor has no secret identity. So who'd be protected? Hawkeye and Widow? Um... okay. :lol Given that, a Civil War movie is completely pointless. This is why I'm hoping at the end of Avengers 2, we see them send off Hulk for a Planet Hulk movie with Avengers 3 being WWH. By the time Avengers 3 rolls around they should have plenty of licenses up and running to give Hulk a run for his money, burning through heroes.

Re: Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier

Alexander Lukin from the comics could still be the main villian since Red Skull is trapped in his mind it wouldn't need to be Hugo Weaving to portray the little to no scenes you see of Skull in the comics in the WS series but then again if this is strictly WS storyline and nothing more Crossbones could be one of the main as well.

Re: Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier

Superhero registration could be great, but it would be a crossover so huge that you'd likely have to get a bunch of unknowns to play all the major players. Too expensive. As much as I love the X-Men, I can't expect the movies to sustain a 10+ member roster of primary characters with their own story arcs. Who knows, they pulled off the Avengers though right?

I kinda would like to see something like the Xtinction Agenda hit the screen in some fashion, minus Warlock and the weird immortal Hodge head thing.

Back to Cap, I was actually expecting Red Skull to have some kind of cameo in Avengers 2 with him transporting himself somewhere in Thanos' backyard. Eh. :dunno

Anyway, I'd love to see a new and improved suit out of all this!

The superhero registration act storyline would also be vastly different in the marvel cinematic universe for the simple fact that I don't see tony stark (as played by rdj) being for it nor cap (as played by Evans) being against it.

Re: Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier

Since Matt Vaughn quit XMen FC-DOFP it looks like Singer will probably direct. I could see Singer and Weadon working together on a future project if Fox and Disney will allow it.

The big obsticle was Tom Rothman, former CEO of 20th Century Fox. Notice i said 'former'. This could be a door opening to a bigger Marvel universe. Disney and Fox both know it would be a money farm to do a big crossover.

Not really. It'd be in Disney's best interest to let Fox fail and get the licenses back.

Re: Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier

Vaughn passed on now Singer will direct? Bah. Oh well. FC will always be awesome even if it has to be a "standalone" movie from here on out.
