Neither is Ant-Man. And no one outside of comic geeks even knew about Guardians of the Galaxy until that film released. So your point holds no water. Out side of Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, and Wolverine the general public did not give a crap about any of these characters. But great story telling on film creates an audience. Blade wasn't even an ongoing comic before the Wesley Snipes film. All it takes is vision and a willingness to commit. Marvel seems to lack the guts to do that when it comes to POC. 20freaking18 before we get a POC in a lead role??? Yet the talking raccoon and tree were deemed useful. It sucks! Comics are a booming industry. DC is spinning shows out left and right, and yet they still have yet to introduce a POC as a hero. We are all over the support staff characters. I can't wait for my little boy to see black Jimmy Olsen and realize that while he can't be a hero, he can take pictures of them. Marvel is the same. At this stage Marvel could release anything and it would be a hit. Yet they refuse to acknowledge that even their own world extends beyond straight white males. And not to be an ass, but white men have had a nice long run. There are literally thousands of films, tv shows, books, video games with a white male as the hero. It would be nice to see other represented is all I am saying.
And when talking about comic sales affecting the films: Miles Morales and Kamala Khan both outsell Iron Man, Hulk, Cap, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Inhumans, GOTG. Yet neither of them are even on deck.
My point may not hold water for you, but the characters you brought up, I've never heard of half of them. And I am a comic geek. Thousands of issues, thousands of collectibles, and I do the whole CBM stuff (well movies in general but prefer those) as a living these days. But I had heard of GotG, which by the way had a black women in it, playing a green chick, blue guys, pink guys, purple guys, so tossing that movie into your group of films that no one heard of that didn't have poc was pretty off the mark.
And your first post about this brought up how you wanted to see someone like you, but totally dismissed that as a valid reason for white folks to do something. That's hypocritical. Just becuase there are movies in the past with white people in them doesn't change that if you happen to be white and are making a movie you may feel you want a project YOU work on that takes you away from YOUR family to connect on that same way (the way you brought up) to YOUR family. Lots as valid a reason as yours. That's all I'm saying.
To address what you said about blade...TMNT wasnt a successful ongoing comic franchise when it got its movie either. But the story was there, the characters where already developed. Blade was a fully fleshed out character with a fully fleshed out universe. Is he superman, or the hulk, no. But he's also not a third year character in his own books. And he has cross platform interest, as in vampire/horror. Most people at the time had zero idea it was even a comic. Most thought it was horror. But I would bet most people that read are a lot more familiar with blade:day walker then most of the characters you listed.
I completly, again, agree with the sentiment that there needs to be more diversity in the industry as a whole. So, maybe look at what I'm saying as an explanation not defense. I didn't say it was right there are no poc. I simply explained why.
And just tossing out any character just becuase they are of color isn't the route either. You brought up antman...no, not a huge following. But not near as unknown as the characters you mentioned (he's on the cover of avengers 1). But even marvel has admitted hes a gamble(part of why they used Douglas and Rudd to bank on the star power). And they actually (from what I heard) considered using someone of color in the movie on rudds role. But becuase of the nature of the story they didn't want the first black lead hero to be a convict. So they couldn't do it there. As I pointed out GotG has plenty of real (Zoe. Or half the actual actors used on screen in the main team) and alien colors. As for the others...let's see...which one could they have replaced...probably none. Which of the current or upcoming films (until 2018 as u mentioned) would you have replaced with a poc?
As for your crack about taking photos...I do think we live in a world where the president of the United states, elected two terms, is black. So, me personally, when my daughter of color asks me what can I do? I'll tell her she can do anything she wants, and point to that. And then if she wants to see a poc as a super hero I'll show her one of the movies you dismissed, GotG, and show her black people and green people and blue people are the same. The outside doesn't matter. It's what's on the inside. And if she wants to know if she can be an actress, there Zoe. And there's lawrence fishburn and Samuel Jackson and Wesley snipes. And others. Or maybe the fantastic four where the family looks like hers. Mixed. Forgot about that one, which happens to come out in 2015. A few years before 2018. So, I think she's got options. Would it be better if there where more, sure. But I'm not gonna be mad that no one had the guts to make superman black. Or the hulk Asian. Or thor Iraqi. And I'm not going to get mad when a white person wants to make a super hero for his kid, that looks like or can relate better to him/her, if I am going to allow for the same thing from any other race. Sorry.
