Just got back. I'm happy to report that I really enjoyed it, BUT if you were to erase all of the Skrull stuff and the cat, it would all be your average forgettable paint-by-numbers Marvel film. That being said I found none of it bad enough to be worth hating, but it still wasn't all that great. I thought you could see most if not all of the film's "twists" coming from a mile away. This will definitely be forgotten by the time AEG rolls around. Talos may very well have been the best part, he was a real scene stealer and Mendelsohn totally owned his role. I don't know how anyone can say he wasn't wasted in Rogue One after this. The Fury and Goose scenes were a close second. The only thing that really bothered me was...
...the inclusion of the Tesseract. I was originally going to complain about it being a massive continuity error with the events of The First Avenger, but I see that others have already explained the connection.
Overall I would probably put it in the "middle of the road" category of the MCU. Nowhere near as good as the best of Phase One, but better than Ant-Man 2, Thor 2, Guardians 2, AoU, and of course leagues ahead of the no fun to be had Civil War, awful Incredible Hulk, and the narrative disaster Thor 3... although none of that really says much.
Yes Fury is really lame in this. Don’t expect him to be the younger cool Fury from the comics.
I can’t believe they had freaking SKRULLS in this, and they looked great, and they spent a big chunk of time with them either sitting at a dinner table ina farmhouse, or sitting in a chair, or sitting in a plane seat, or in a train, and just talking talking talking...
Brie Larson! I liked how she played the part. I liked her sly smile. She was likable enough.
Sam Jackson was great as usual as Fury.
I thought the first half was pretty fun all around.
What I did not care for.
Villains again where all Meh.. Par for the course in most Marvel movies.
I thought the 2nd half was meh..
No really good action scenes that stood out.
Which ties in with the #1 issue. The direction was unimaginative and the look of the film left a lot to be desired. It just was kinda bland all around. Thank goodness for Brie and Jackson or I may not have given this movie any sort of credit.
Also did not care for
How Fury lost his eye. Come on man that's cannon now and I don't like that the Avengers are kinda nemaed after Cap Marvel... It would be cool if I knew her since the beginning but it sorta feels forced.
What I don't get.
Audience reactions and reviews to that cat... What the hell?? I mean Ok it was a cat (well not just a cat) but for people to make such a big deal.. Don't get it.
It was a perfectly decent Marvel movie but Thor 1 and 2, TIH, BP and Ant-Man were all much better in my opinion.
I would say first time viewing I liked it more then BP but 2nd viewing of BP was a much better viewing experience.
I would say its far better then A:AOU, IM2 and 3 Its better then Ant-Man and the Wasp, Dr Strange, and CA:TFA. I may even like it better then Spider- Man homecoming but I would need to watch that again.
I need to see it again to see how I compare it to Thor 3.
I wanted to get pumped up for her "Get up" scene.. I blame the director. He could not bring it home. It should have been goose bump inducing but it just didn't do it for me. She did look cool in her Red Blue and Golds though.
I think the sound may have been a little low end in my theater.
And of course there’s such a thing as reverse racism and oppression from either extreme side is a real thing and can only lead to harm and destruction to those being oppressed but do yourself a favor ignore her personal opinions on white male movie critics (I mean seriously critics lol), clear your mind relax and watch.
I think IM3 sucked pretty hard actually. It was better made then a Catwoman or Batman and Robin. It was not that Kind of Sucked.. But I thought it was overall garbage.
So to sum up. I give CM credit for getting me behind a character I knew nothing about. Brie and Jackson were very good to great. I was less then impressed with the look and direction of the film as it offered nothing new Could have been a made for TV movie in that respect.

Dude.. I just don't get you and your CW hate..
You also need to take back what you said about TIH
Seems like you def like your MArvel movies to be Fun.. CW is a bit more serious and TIH doesn't feel like part of the MCU because of its lack of humor.
IMO TIH is 85% perfect.. If the ending with Abomination could have been handled better and not felt rushed in some way. They nailed the Hulk's personality best in that one.. They got his strength best in THe original Avengers.
Yeah.. I hope it does not come across like I am tearing down your reviews.. That all comes from a place of deep respect for your opinions on the cinema arts

My big problem with CW is that it tried to be Avengers 3 but without Thor and Hulk whilst also being titled "Captain America" despite Rogers obviously not being the core focus. To me it felt more like a soap opera than a serious espionage film like TWS or a just plain fun popcorn movie like most of Marvel's other stuff.
Then of course there is the ultimately worthless villain and forcing Spider-Man in for no reason.

Aside from the bad CGI, I honestly thought the movie was OK up until the Abomination battle - and dropping the ball with the third act can often destroy an otherwise good/OK movie for me. Granted I have only seen it once, so for all I know it could improve with a repeat viewing.

At least that actually works if you watch in episodic order. Though I *have* been wondering lately why Owen didn’t recognise Threepio in ANH (different coverings aside).
