Saw Borat last night. That's the funniest movie I've ever seen. Craig will never be my Bond.

Daniel Craig is IMO the best of the Bonds yet (and I heavily liked both Connery and Brosnan)!!

"Casino Royale" managed to turn the series away from the science fiction path it had catapulated down in "Die Another Day" (solar weapons, invisible cars, DNA reconfiguration, etc.) and created a truly brutal spy thriller. This is a Bond movie that really forces the audience to think and analyze. What's the real plot? Who's on whose side? How is this going to turn out?

You know, obviously, that Bond has to emerge victorious, but there are so many twists and turns along the way that you're still on the edge of your seat. The poker game in particular had my wife and I waiting in suspense.

This truly had the feel and spirit of a 1960s movie permeating a 21st century world, which gives it that timeless feel and what Bond is all about.

Craig made an exceptional Bond through his conflicted performance. He is a brutal killer. He has a tenderness which he tries to keep hidden. He can be hurt physically and emotionally. Most important of all, he is NAIVE in this film...just the way a brand new "00" should be on his first true mission. Bond learns a lot of lessons throughout the course of this story, and Craig makes the evolution completely believable. One thing my wife and I noticed and found funny is that Bond was absolutely terrible at tailing people. I don't think he got away with it once!! :)

Eva Green was wonderful as Vesper Lynd. She and Craig had a great chemistry, and the concurrent romantic plot was extremely believable because of it. There were so many times where it could've slipped into cheesiness, but the performances kept it grounded. Her witty, sophisticated banters and barbs with Bond were far better than the tired double entandres of recent Bonds. It was more on the level of the chess game between McQueen and Dunaway in the original "Thomas Crown Affair." And the shower scene managed to surpass the ending of OHMSS in terms of emotional vulnerability. You can truly believe this is the moment where Bond falls for Vesper.

Mads Mikkelsen also receives due credit for crafting a character that was both deadly but vulnerable. Le Chiffre wasn't looking for global domination. He was trying to save his own a**, and his own life was in danger because of his actions (a darker mirror image of Bond). His body language and verbal deliveries were natural and authentic.

Lastly, I have to commend the action sequences. There are some who've complained about the lack of major action setpieces, which makes this more of a drama than action film. I have to disagree. This movie oozes action, but they are on much smaller scales. Yes, there are three major setpieces (the free running sequence through the African construction site has to be seen to be believed), but I enjoyed the smaller pieces more...particularly the knife struggle in the museum. Very tense and exhilarating (even if it only lasts a minute).

EON Productions should definitely take a cue from the old films and make director Martin Campbell as the de facto Bond director (much like Terence Young was in the Connery years). Campbell has revived Bond twice. "Goldeneye" managed to reignited Bond after a lengthy hiatus. Now, "Casino Royale" has recaptured the soul of 007 when it seemed impossible.

All of the Craig naysayers are naturally entitled to their opinions, but I truly believe they should go see "Casino Royale" with an open mind and then make their decision.

Oh yeah...MAKE A 1/6 DANIEL CRAIG FIGURE NOW, SIDESHOW!!!!

this is not a "just walked out of", hyped up review.
Had a night to sleep on it.

Do you know...having slept on it the movie seems even better.

I'm going again tonight

:D

I believe that in the Manchester area there's not a single ticket for any peformance this weekend left.

Now THAT's a great box office performance...

I think someone else has said it, but this isn't just a great "Bond" movie, but a great movie all around. At first I thought changing Baccarat to Poker was stupid and unnecessary, but from a filmmaking perspective it gives the audience an in - everyone knows poker so the viewers will know just from seeing the cards what's going on, whereas Baccarat would have needed a lot of explaining.

And I never thought I'd say this, but move over Mr. Connery - there's a new favorite Bond in town!

Problem is - they've set the bar too high for the next one - how the hell are they going to live up to this?

I agree that this is a movie that stands on its own, Bond franchise or not. A lot of people who don't normally like Bond movies might really enjoy it. I can't believe that not only did it not disappoint me, I liked it a lot more than I expected. The comparison to Batman Begins are appropriate, I think. They have successfully rebooted the franchise after "Die Another Day"--the "Batman and Robin" of Bond movies.

I overheard a few people comparing it to Batman Begins today. I'm seeing it tomorrow evening, and I'm sure after I get home I'll be posting on this board wanting my Craig!Bond figure.

OK I was one of those people that didn't think Craig would be a good Bond. I stand corrected. He is going to be a great Bond. It just took less than a minute to get over the change (lets face it he isn't what most people first think of when they think of Bond) but the scene of him beating the heck of that guy in the bathroom sold me on him as Bond. I love how much tougher he is. I loved it when he just crashed through the wall.

So, Sideshow when will we see our Craig Bond figure? :D

I'm a huge Bond fan, and Connery was Bond to me always. I'm as old school as they get, but I saw this movie tonight and I can honestly say with all due respect to Connery, Craig is hands down the best Bond I've seen. Great movie.

That's why I think it'll be easy for people to overlook the fact that he doesn't look like the traditional Bond, because this isn't a traditional Bond movie. The pre-title sequence makes it very clear that this is a new direction for Bond films and the old rulebook has been thrown out.

I only own one Bond figure - Sean Connery.

I would buy a "Casino Royale" Craig as Bond figure.

The one-two-three-punch of pre-title sequence, gunnbarrel shot and crazy-ass retro title sequence had me giddy like a kid. Then the damn Madagascar chase sequence kicks in. Holy hell. Seeing again tomorrow.

Ok a word of advice - no matter how big a fanboy you are the headache you get after seeing 3 movies in the same day isn't worth it (especially if it's the same movie). :D
My first post was written with the fanboy attitude. I was able to better analyze the movie the 2nd & 3rd times without the OMFG factor. Bottom line is I stand by my initial impressions. Casino Royale is fantastic, Craig is fantastic. 'nuff said.
To get to my actual point: where I believe the series is going.
1. They are trying to bring back S.P.E.C.T.R.E. or a similar organization - probably a new one as Kevin McClory is nuts.
2. Future Bonds will be direct sequels instead of standing alone.
3. We need a figure!

Old School Bond baby!!!!

No Killer Satellites!!!

No cheap CGI moments!!!

Real and exciting stunts!!!

Awesome story that keeps you interested throughout the movie. I loved the stunts and the fight choreography.

I agree that other than Goldeneye, the Pierce movies were lacking a bit. Goldeneye was mostly interesting due to the whole 006 story and the introduction of Brosnan as Bond.

I just saw the film tonight and came home to my issue of Entertainment Weekly with Bond on the cover. This film is definitely one of the best of the year and Craig has earned the title of the coolest spy around. Even my girlfriend said to me at the end of the film: "I feel disloyal to Pierce but I really liked this new guy as Bond"

So what outfit would we want the figure in? Opening scene outfit? The classic Tux? The Bahamas or Madagascar vacation outfits? The suit at the end? Something else (as long as it isn't torture scene Bond )?

I kinda hope we get an exclusive accessory with him (although the rest of the Legacy Collection hasn't, well themselves I guess). Maybe some sixth scale poker stuff? :007

All previous actors have been done as figs in tuxedos at one point or another, yeah? I'd prefer if they held off on Craig in a tux. It'd have to be the Madagascar outfit or the suit from the last shot.

Oh, and HA HA HA...

Since they can't use S.P.E.C.T.R.E.--how about ELLIPSIS?

He will be getting to the bottom of this in the next film, and they carefully laid the tracks for a new terror organization that has the continuity of S.P.E.C.T.R.E. but works in a contemporary setting.

Here's what Craig had to say (SPOILERS):

I'm signed for three films. Now I actually feel we're ready to do another one. What we've set up in this one, we set up this idea that there is an organization out there, maybe there's one person who's responsible. The fact is now he has to go and get them. Obviously there's an element of revenge because the woman he loved had to die because of him. It's all those things that hopefully we'll take into the next movie. Hopefully all those things will make it as rich an experience as this one.

And from producer Barbara Broccoli:

At the end of this film there’s unfinished business,’ she said. ‘It’s clear in this story that there’s someone out there. In fact there’s a line at the end of the book Casino Royale where Bond makes a decision that he’s going to take on this task, he’s going to become a warrior and try to find the hand that holds the whip. The big menace out there, the man who manipulates people and gets them to do evil things. That’s very much the spirit of the book and that’s the direction were going to continue on.
