Excellent! I was thinking of doing the same thing. Hopefully we'll get a response from SS.

I own the SSW version and it's a fantastic statue, but seeing as SS with their PF's have done a better job than SSW on almost every character so far I can see where some might not be too anxious for SS to do a CT.

yup sir, i agree, most of sideshow's pfs (except GTW and maybe frodo) are amazing, though i only own the baddies for now but on the process of saving up for aragorn. the cave troll stat by ssw is also a great piece, don't get me wrong. it's just that i find it a bit too much for such a relatively smaller piece to be worth almost a thousand dollars. if ss decides to make a pf of the cave troll, it would cost much less, or maybe just equal to that, but definitely be a much larger figure.

i sure do hope they do decide on doing the piece.

A PF cave troll can wait until other key characters are made. Gimli, Boromir, Merry, Pippin, GTG for starters. I would prefer to get the SSW version as it is a direct link to the movies, coming from the original creators as it where, but if an SSC piece is made available I would definately consider it.


As for comparing the PF's with SSW pieces it dosen't seem fair (even on an initial cost level).
WETA started it with some excellently sculpted pieces and it has been carried on in a natural progression by Sideshow using newer, modern sculpting techniques in a different format. Both have had problems with likeness and such, but I certainly don't see the WETA pieces as inferior to the 'modern', different format, SSC PF's.

Nice to see WETA back in ME and looking forward to seeing what both companies come up with so we can rate or slate 'em!

Well you know what they say Dave, "life's not fair....and then you die". No doubt the format's are different and one's bias towards one format or the other is going to help shape their opinion, but ultimately everything comes down to the skill level of the sculptor. And quite frankly IMO SS's line-up of great sculptors [Trevor Grove, Andy Bergholtz, Pablo Viggiano, Jeff Yeager, Martin Gore and the Gore Group, etc.....] are just too much for Weta to overcome.The day someone can convince me Weta's Arargorn and Legolas statues are even remotely in the same league as SS's in the all important likeness dept. is the day I'll change my mind.

Well here's the cave troll compared to Legolas and Gimli :

From the pic's the CT look to be about 3X larger than Gimli and at least twice as tall as Legolas. Considering the Legolas PF [character alone] stands approx. 18" tall a CT is going to stand at least 36" tall. Even slouched over it's going to be huge....and will more than likely make the Hulk PF look like a midget.

woah! visually, it would be stunning really to have a cave troll pf that size! thanks woodsy for the images, i could have a clearer size comparison between the characters now.

if i could have it my way, that's what i really want to see included in my collection. but in case, just in case it would cost too much to be mass produced, even with a low ES, ss could scale it down a bit, as what i've said in my earlier posts, as long as it is still bigger than the other pfs released. the problem with that though, is when the sauron pf finally gets released, yes sideshow, i'm holding on to what you've said, it would stand at 36" and if the cave troll gets scaled down, sauron would be taller.

Totally agree with that

I don't believe for one second that I could feel the same about a PF CT as I could about my SSW CT...Weta has a way of capturing the essence of a creature in a statue...and that is probably because they actually created the look of the creature

but so far, sideshow's items have mostly been better, not generalizing here, just mostly... and they are bigger! the only ones that i really like from the ss weta line are the horse sets! and sideshow has already stated that they won't be doing those in pf form, so that leaves them to be made in diorama scale which makes them smaller than the weta pieces (weta ones are in 1/6 scale while ss dios are in 1/9). but then again, who knows? those might come out better too!

I would sincerely and completely disagree with this, personally I far prefer Weta LOTR products (including the SSW line) then SS products

Images can be deceiving. In the first pic Aragorn is leaning backwards and the Cave Troll is at full height. I'm comparing the actual specs/size of the real life Cave Troll compared to the real life Abomination . They are both the same height so the size I posted for Abomination directly relates to the size of the Cave Troll. And yes, it would have to be hunched over. My point is because the Cave Troll and Abomination are the same size and Sideshow produced an Abomination PF, a Cave Troll PF is possible. Probably not realistic but possible. I can tell you one thing, if they made it, I would buy it. The biggest hurdle is the base. To do a Cave Troll PF, the standard base used for the Lord of the Rings PFs would have to change and my guess is that it won't happen.
