I don't think any of the PF creatures have been better than Weta. The moria orcs are far superior to the Santa orc, and the zerker also is better. Sideshow have radicalised theirs and turned it into some sort of hybrid. Weta created these creatures and believe me, they can't be bettered. The humans are a different matter, obviously the Aragorn PF has a better likeness than the SSW Aragorn statue, but PF's are just not my thing so i prefer to have the SSW statue.
Some people might prefer a SS cave troll PF because it'll be more affordable than the Weta one for them, but, impressive as i'm sure it would look, do you really think they could do better than the person who actually created it for the film?
And you admit you prefer the SS PF's because they're bigger...but not better. The only SSW you say you like are the horse statues....because they're big, by any chance? ;)

I certainly believe that there is never a stand-still in innovation. And yes, there have been instances where original creators have been outdone by other companies, independent sculptors, and customizers. Examples can be seen in releases by not only weta, but Stan Winston Studios and etc. To me, this isn't a SS vs. Weta debate. I like to put every company into the mix and choose pieces by the merit of the piece, not what is written on the base or box.

Also, I'm not in the camp of bigger is better, but a larger piece provides a larger medium to increase the level of detail (take the 1:1 busts for ex.). It's up to the sculptor/designer to take advantage of this and collectors who are looking for these traits. The first Frodo that I actually thought was decent was the Crack of Doom Dio, not SSW's or the PF. And, this piece was very small. On the other hand, I bought the 1/3 CM T-800 over the SS 1/4 not because it was bigger, but because the medium allowed more detail and accuracy. If SS would have accomplished this in 1/4 scale, I may have just stuck with that.

same as kaosinla's above. he explains it perfectly.

and to answer your question since you quoted me, i don't prefer ss pf's because they're bigger, but because in MY OPINION, they're better in sculpt, craftsmanship, and overall quality compared to SOME of weta's cake toppers (look at their arwen! OMG!). i didn't buy the frodo pf or the gandalf the white pf, and never will, but i have to disagree with you on the creatures. true that sideshow somehow gave these pieces a bit of tweening here and there, but the characters never lost their essence, kinda even improved them a bit. for example, the berserker never had fangs, at least not that long, but ss gave him some, not for anything else, but to give him a fiercer look, thus, improving the overall appeal of the piece, but it still remained LOTR's berserker, right? for the moria orc, hehe, the red cloth does quite give him a christmassy look, glad mine didn't have that bright red "dress" on him, mine has a darker, dirtier tone, and he's perfect.

for the horses, i bought them because sideshow never released nor would ever release such pieces in that scale. plain and simple as that. but if they ever had their own versions of these in pf, then i would've bought those instead.;)

Cool, i completely understand and respect what you're trying to say now :peace
Have you ever owned the Weta zerker? I reccommend it ;)
At the end of the day, it's all LOTR and that's what we love right? ;)

though i'd love to see what PF version of the troll would look like, i can't see ssc ever making one or if they did the ES would have to be very low or maybe a PPO. since i believe ssc is getting tired of all these larger PF's sitting on the warehouse shelves.

yes they all look great, but the truth is that most collectors don't have the room to properly display these suckers which is why in theory they may sound good, but in all reality and economic reasoning they never sell that well.

Seeing as SS has already stated these PF's would be in the 18" tall and $450 range [max.] it is not likely we will ever see a CT in PF. Would I buy one if SS makes it, absolutely....it would go great alongside my SSW CT statue. :D
I'm not sure about the "sitting on the warehouse shelves" comment though as other than the reg. Berserker [now on 2nd chance] there isn't a single LOTR PF sitting in their warehouse at the moment.

True, you can compare and make observations, but it's just this whole age old SS V Weta debate always just seems to pit one company's products against the others, just not in a good way. It goes without saying one person will have different opinions from others, but it's just when people start saying other's opinions are wrong and that one product is definately better than the other, that's when it get's stupid.

I agree 100%. There is nothing wrong with making comparisons, we do this every single day, comparing one person to another, one restaurant to another, one movie to another....and the list goes on. As for the SS vs Weta arguement [I'd rather use the term discussion myself] it is a natural comparision to make. These are the two largest companies to ever produce LOTR collectibles so comparisons are inevitable, and they have been going on since the moment SS announced their first LOTR PF [Lurtz]. The key is to do so respectfully. I do not agree with GG and FE on this, but we can discuss our differences respectfully, and more often than not lightheartedly. I am not trying to convince them that I'm right [I am BTW :naughty] and they are not trying to convince me that they are right. And really, getting personal about something as insignificant as "toys for adults" really is silly. And whether I agree with GG and FE or not, I will always defend their right to be wrong....:D :naughty

you maybe correct, but the lotr collectors have never had a chance to try and display such a large collectable.... by large i mean footprint size, all of the larger marvel pf's footprint size make them near impossible to display in any form of common display units.

though you may see the odd Hulk and Thing displayed, the Cave Troll will be closer if not larger than the Abomination PF, and that thing is much bigger than the previously mentioned.
i really think a PPO for a Cave Troll with the es set at around 200-250 would go over quite well though. heck i might even line up for that one since he's considered a baddy.
