It happens more than you would think. Another group I am on reports this stuff all the time. It's gotten so bad that if someone jokes about the cops being called they get asked if their dog is ok.

I respect the hell out of the police for the job that they do but some times the force they use is not justified in my opinion. I don't mean to second guess them but there are some really messed up videos out there.

Did they really need to send in the SWAT for this knowing there was a 7 y/o kid?? They knocked on the door twice and kicked the door in before giving them a chance to open the door.

If they felt like the 7 year old was in any kind of danger and had other reasons to believe SWAT was needed they will. Do we know how long they really waited for them to kick it in? I don't think they're going to know and wait 5 mins before doing anything.

When it comes to these things, I wasn't there at the time so I can't judge what exactly was going down. The only time it upsets me is when they have the wrong house. In this case, I'm sure they didn't go through all of this simply because of a little pot. They probably just hit the house at the wrong time or the guy got tipped off. IMO, if that guy was selling drugs from his house, he was putting his kids (and his dogs for that matter) in danger every day.

I heard about this when it happened on reddit, I believe. Don't even get me started on what I think about cops. :rollseyes

The over-militarization of the police and overuse of SWAT teams in America is pretty ridiculous, and it's spreading up north as well.

Unless you think the guy is running a major drug operation, why not just wait until he leaves and arrest him, especially if you obviously have no clue if other people are in the house?

Guess if you actually ever need one you won't be calling them then huh?

Only time I ever needed a cop was when my car got hit outside my own house.

He did nothing except look confused and hungry.

Honestly when are you gonna need to call the cops? When Michael Myers comes to get you? You think there gonna get there in time?

Now an ambulance...

Yep, only if absolutely necessary. Hopefully I'll get one who isn't a power-trippin' ____.

My thoughts exactly.

Not trying to change the subject here but that's what I never understood about Waco. AFAIK David Koresh could have been picked up around town any number of times. Why the compound was raided and all the innocents had to die there is beyond me.

Cops are good for two things, when trafiic lights go down and taping off a crime scene after they arrive too late.

Theyre nothing more then a deterrent and a poor one.

I don't think we need to turn this into a bashing cops thread. We have several members who are/were police officers.

You are going to find people who abuse their power in EVERY job. Doesn't mean they are all like that.

It's a tough job and I don't think I would want to do it. I have much respect for the police - it's an often times thankless job and they are always putting their lives on the line.

No, that's why I carry a gun. But there are plenty of times when officers are needed. I would say the majority of police handle themselves in a very professional way. It's just when an incident occurs like the subject of this thread happens, it unfairly labels all cops as JBT's.

Here, here.

Guess you forgot about the North Hollywood Shootout. Not that this drug raid is close to that level, but it is the reason why SWAT is like it is.

The only time I've ever ended up with one, I didn't exactly need one.

But, no. Won't be calling them for anything short of murder, rape or burglary, and that's only because I can't hunt people down myself. I sure as hell won't be calling them to narc.

Bill Clinton and Janet Reno on an anti-Second Amendment power trip?

But in the line of work they are in, an abuse of power is inexcusable. They have license to kill. There is an amazingly high standard of character required to be a police officer, and those who live up to it have my highest respect. Those who don't are an abomination and should never have been given a badge.

And for things like that, they should have that kind of power. But the only reason they would ever need that kind of firepower in dealing with drugs is because the commodity is illegal, and the only way it can be defended from thieves and/or competitors is with heavy firepower. Were drugs legal, there would be no need for SWAT teams to break down the doors of otherwise law-abiding citizens' homes.

I'd also bet that there are remarkably few drug dealers defending their business with machine guns, who live in apartments with their wife and kids.
