If they arrested Koresh walking around town, what could they've charged him with? Wouldn't they have to get him and his followers inside with all the weapons?

Anyhow, I blame David Koresh and the other adults in that compound for those kids dying.

And I agree with Jen on her comments about police.

But in the line of work they are in, an abuse of power is inexcusable. They have license to kill. There is an amazingly high standard of character required to be a police officer, and those who live up to it have my highest respect. Those who don't are an abomination and should never have been given a badge.

An abuse of power in any profession is inexcusable.

Stealing fries from McDonalds and bashing someones brains in with a nightstick are a little differant in my book. No one else has the right to do severe physical harm to you because you wouldn't let them detain you without reason, something they can do for a certain amount of time.

Hmmmm...I don't know if I would necessarily classify someone stealing a few french fries as an abuse of power. I'm thinking more of clergy, politicians, money mangers, many CEO's, cult leaders, etc...People who abuse their power to do physical/emotional or monetary harm to others.

Well thats not really any profession then, but I definately agree about those you mention.

Ok, I will clarify that petty theft is not as bad as someone stealing millions. However, he/she is a thief and should be held accountable if their employers want to prosecute. Most likely in a case like this the employee would get a warning and/or have to pay for the fries. They however, would still be held accountable for their actions (as petty as they may be)- as should anyone else who abuses their power or steals.

It is. But in the profession of law enforcement, it's an abomination. No one else is free to walk on domestic soil armed and charged with the power to detain, search, and/or arrest. The job carries with it the highest honor, so when that honor is tarnished, I don't think the crime commited is comparable to any other crime (short of treason).

I think to bash police as a whole because the media only carries the ones who do things badly is wrong. If we had no police, things would be chaos.

If you don't like the police at all. Don't call them when someone rips off your home, beats your wife, or whatever bad things (heaven forbid) happens to you.

Totally agree.

And for things like that, they should have that kind of power. But the only reason they would ever need that kind of firepower in dealing with drugs is because the commodity is illegal, and the only way it can be defended from thieves and/or competitors is with heavy firepower. Were drugs legal, there would be no need for SWAT teams to break down the doors of otherwise law-abiding citizens' homes.

I'd also bet that there are remarkably few drug dealers defending their business with machine guns, who live in apartments with their wife and kids.

I don't think you would raid a possible drug house with a couple of 9mm berettas and a vest. They obviously were geared up like because they were expecting more than a small bag of illegal drugs and a corgi.

Funny thing about all this, if they found 200 lbs of drugs and a crate of uzi's in the basement, would all this be justified, or would people still cry over a dog being shot?

It still would be unjustified as they never took any fire. People don't lose theyre human rights because they did something illegal.

Is that really this guy's fault for being in his own home with a plant, or is it the _______ adrenaline roid babies armed to the teeth with automatic weapons and a license to murder going out looking for trouble?

I agree as well. Our local police does a lot for our communities. We have had many cop killings in the last year. Good people, just doing their jobs. In one case they hadn't even started their shift yet and were just meeting for coffee.

Before that:
https://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/11/01/washington.cop.killed/index.html

A year before that, another officer was killed in a routine traffic stop.

It's a hard and dangerous job and I don't think they get the respect and thanks they deserve.

An analogy that keeps coming into my mind is the military. You have men and women in the service who have abused their power. But I would say that the majority are honest people, doing the best they can. I would never speak poorly of our military because of the actions of a few. Just as I never would with the police.

You do realise however, theres a differance between a traffic cop, and a SWAT team right?

I highly doubt they would send in a SWAT team for a guy at home with a plant. I'm inclined to believe that this guy was dealing in large amounts and was probably tipped off and was able to unload his stash before they arrived.

And when you are dealing with drug dealers - you are usually dealing with people who are armed. It is better to be safe than sorry.

We don't know the whole story. For we know they could have had an informer or undercover officer who was lead to believe this guy would be alone with xxx amount of drugs. Bad intel, or like I said they guy was tipped off beforehand.

Exactly, bad intel is my guess, and that is the problem.

If I have an arguement with someone I don't like, does that give me a right to call the police and say so and so is here and armed with guns and thousands of pounds of cocaine. I can, sure, but its the job of the police to investigate that and make sure its not just BS before they bust into someones home with loaded assualt rifles and the intention of kill or be killed.

Marijuana is a natural plant, more natural then tobacco, beer, wine, cocaine, or almost any other drug for that matter. No one or no thing should die because a politician doesn't like a plant.

Really?! There's a difference? OMG! Thanks for clarifying.

Yes I know there's a difference....my point is that these are men and women who put their lives on the line for us every day and it's sad how some can quickly bash a whole police force.

Well it doesn't work like that. They are not going to send in drug raid on a house due to phone call from a neighbor. There is more info to this that hasn't been released.

As for the plant, doesn't matter if it's natural, doesn't matter what you or I think of it, it is illegal right now.

And it goes back to what I said earlier, if he never messed with it, none of this would have happened.

I would say that they probably did investigate or this guy had already been under surveillance. I highly doubt that they are going to send in a SWAT team over some tip they receive on the phone before checking it out. Like I said, the guy lucked out and was able to unload or dispose of his stash before they arrived.

And I think its sad to blindy support men and women with the right to state sanctioned murder.

and now were guessing at facts no differant then the cops likely did. Agree to disagree.

Well maybe you should read some earlier posts - there were several about how cops were basically good for nothing.

I'm not sure what you mean about your first sentence. Most cops don't go in for the kill shot unless their lives are in danger. I do believe they are trained to injure and take down their suspects so that way they can go to trial and possibly get more intel out of them if they are connected to a crime ring. It's not like we give cops guns and tell them go out and kill everyone who look suspicious.

If you are talking about the death penalty, well then that is completely different.
