I think Sideshow's handling, then whimpering abadonment of the licence really soured a lot of people.

I think I've purchased one 1/6 Sideshow figure since then. I have a Hot Toys pre-order with them. You could say I've lost faith/fallen out of love with them. All good things must come to an end.

Customs are more fun than hoping Sideshow will finish what they start.

Yup. I know I picked up a bunch of extra hobbits when people were basically giving them away. Those were sad and dark times for 1/6 lotr but getting them for $19 a piece was something you just can't turn down even if the chances of being able to one day get Merry and Pippin sculpts were slim.
