Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)
The only reason I was on board with the movie is because I love Batman and I thought David Ayer was a great director. I didn't think the SDCC trailer looked very good, and it seemed like they were taking the nihilistic punk appeal of Heath Ledger's Joker and blowing it it up to an 11. It just seemed like an average crime movie with a hot-topic aesthetic. I was also hesitant about characters like Captain Boomerang because they're too ridiculous to me to take seriously. (That's totally a taste thing since I like a lot things that I know others would think are dumb). Everything about it just seemed cheesy to me just like the Batman V Superman trailers (But it's the two greatest pop-culture icons on the big screen so I'm going to do whatever it takes to convince myself to like it. I think it's going to be good though!)
This trailer, however, is amazing! I thought Civil War was easily going to be best superhero of the year based on its trailer, but I wasn't expecting something that was going to achieve a level of greatness like the Dark Knight. Suicide Squad might! This film is looking fantastic! I'm finally sold on the look of this Joker, and I think he might even be my favorite interpretation of the character. I just hope it doesn't fall into typical 3 act structure, One of the reasons why the Dark Knight is so unique to me is because of its 5 acts.
