Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

Well it's the first time both the actor AND the character survived a movie for once...

It's also the first time the Jokers plan succeeded. Harley is with him. :yess:

I like this Joker.

And I wanna see Batfleck punch those teeth in.

karamazov I don't know what to make of your review because usually when I really like a movie you hate it and vice versa. I don't know what "mediocre" is to you. :lol Can you list a couple other superhero movies that you'd also rate the same as Suicide Squad?
There's nothing really like it out there, so I don't know that it's comparable to anything else I've seen. . .closest may be Mystery Men? Though Mystery Men had more of an identity. As far as giving it a similar "score," I would probably put this on par with Daredevil, Watchmen, or Ang Lee's Hulk. I would rank this higher than the other Snyder movies, Schumacher movies, Green Lantern, X3. Lower than just about all the Marvel Studios, Nolan, or Singer X-Men stuff.

Mystery Men
thats a very peculiar comparison (The cast of Mystery men Also hated how the movie turned out) I liked Mystery men, I never got the hate for it, i think i might like this

( I really love Batman forever so I think I might like this)

I think it's one of those movies that you can really enjoy if you can be selective in what you take away from it. It feels like a missed opportunity to me, though, because all the pieces were in place--good actors cast well, a good starting premise, a director with a decent track record. It could have been something special. But as it is I think it will be largely forgotten down the road, unless they can build something more impressive with a sequel.

Certainly, if you like Forever and Mystery Men, I think you might like this one. It's got some great imagery and style. But. . .I'm not sure if it takes itself very seriously or not. And that's part of the problem. With both Forever and Mystery Men, you know that they don't from the get-go, and that frees the viewer up a bit to enjoy the ride for what it is.

Agreed, very hard to classify SS, which is a huge plus in my opinion. Whenever I link it to other films they're never superhero movies. One some levels it's kind of a bombastic, more colorful Escape from New York, which I guess would then make it a "good" version of Escape from L.A. You can't really say that SS is a direct off-shoot of any one film, if anything in future years I could see people watching movies and going "this is kind of like Suicide Squad."

Yeah, that's what I was wondering. Ang Lee's Hulk, pretty much the poster boy for "superhero movie confused about its identity" IMO. I've always liked the tone of Affleck's Daredevil, though nothing in SS made me cringe like the playground fight or several of Bullseye's scenes. I think putting it on the same level of Watchmen is pretty complimentary. I don't know, SS is just one of those movies that I'd hesitate to recommend to anyone but will still be one that I personally enjoy for a very long time. Time will tell.

I think SS establishes from the get go that it doesn't take itself seriously which then allows it to catch you off guard with some of its unsettling Joker moments on one end and endearing character moments on the other. I'm actually really glad you questioned that because in thinking about how to articulate it it really nails one of the things I love most about the movie.

It's dumb and yet...I actually care about the characters. It's silly and yet...kind of freaky in parts. What movie does that? Not many. And that's pretty awesome IMO.

Im hoping to god almighty that the studio releases the longer crazy joker cut. I think they will but I hope they go through with it.
I think I might like this one, but I really hope we get to have the original version of the movie

In the abstract I totally understand where you're coming from, but it just didn't click for me that way. One example of a movie with different tones that did work extremely well for me was Super. It was absurd, comical and inappropriate at times, but then very emotionally wrenching, bittersweet, and dark at others. But it all felt natural, as if it was the director's full vision. Not like he couldn't make up his mind, or perhaps, that the studio couldn't make up its mind (not so much an issue with a small indie movie like that of course).

There is no "original version of the movie." Ayer said there were 10 minutes of viable footage that was NOT cut for running time or ratings but was rather cut for pacing issues. Margot Robbie said it was "magical" but that it would have only added 10 more minutes worth of flashbacks for her character who already had the most flashbacks.

Leto in SS is like DC's Boba Fett or Darth Maul. It's great that you watch it and want more of him, but the movie wouldn't necessarily be better, and could in fact be worse if those wishes were granted.

I was reminded of Escape From New York when the mission started getting going, and it was at that point that the movie started to feel like it was pulling itself together.

But, yes, the film is a clash of styles from music video to film noir, and a lot in between.

When 'Spirit in the Sky' played it seemed a big clue that they wanted this to be another Guardians of the Galaxy. With another band of 'charming' rogues.

i can see it now "buy the joker edition of Suicide Squad on Blu Ray Tuesday, November 29th!"

too me it sounds like all the "cut" joker scenes was just Ayer pointing the camera at Leto and picking the best takes and shots in post.

Yeah I get that you respect the abstract but not the execution. Obviously the original Ghostbusters is a great example of comedy and some genuine scares being married perfectly together. SS is probably closer to Gremlins (comedy, horror, and even some touching "Bye Billy" type moments but again the brilliance of 1984 vastly overshadows SS.) I just think it's somewhat connected in spirit to those great movies even if the execution is more "middle of the road John Carpenter." I don't know, it's shortcomings are what they are but it just works IMO.

Yeah if I had to pick one single movie to link it to it'd be GotG but even in typing this very sentence I'm reminded of the myriad of differences in characters, tone, structure, plot, etc., between SS and GotG.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

I'm leaning very strongly toward getting a HT Deadshot now, I'll say that. I would love to see him show up in future movies, even if he becomes more of a traditional hero (which I would really expect, being Will Smith and all).

One thing that I thought was interesting and surprising about Deadshot given how likable he was was that his vision from Enchantress at the end was actually the only one that was truly evil. Which actually made me wonder if Enchantress was planting what she *thought* would be their greatest desires into their minds or if she really *was* showing them their greatest desires. If it's the latter then Harley's vision becomes interesting and ironic because it means her lecture to Diablo about "people like us" not having "normal" lives was a lie. Or maybe it was something she told herself in order to cope. But then that lie, or coping mechanism, helped Diablo break the spell and save everyone and so on and it's just more that makes me go "damn this is cool stuff to ponder" which is another one of those surprise takeaways I keep mentioning that for me elevates it above dismissible eye candy.

Everyone knows theres much more cut besides the joker stiff. Sites have confirmed what the other deleted scenes are.
We all know the studio had two different versions of the movie that they screened with. Audiences. We all know from the trailers that theres a lot of little cool moments they deleted.
Most people are complaining that the editing of the movie feels choppy and some stuff makes no sense.

The studio heard the complaining with bvs and they are reading the complaining of this one.

I would be shocked and amazed if they dont release a longer cut. Specially if they would make a lot of money with it.
Im just saying. I hope they wise up and release that longer cut.

Re: DC's "Suicide Squad" (August 5th, 2016)

I think it was just that killing Bats was the means to him being free, and able to stay involved with his daughter more than his being evil deep down. He kills people for money, so I guess he is evil from that POV. But I do think she was planting their "true" desires in their minds. And it is true that the others just wanted love and romance. So it is another weird thing. That Harley would want a conventional life with Joker makes zero sense to me. You don't fall for Joker because you want a guy with at 9 to 5 and two children.
