Re: DC Collectibles doing Batman The Animated Series figures!!!!!

What's interesting about the Kenner Batmobile and the design of the animated series car is that the vehicle itself is an optical illusion...of sorts. Since the front of the car is so large and the back so small, it actually creates the illusion that it's larger than it actually is, so if put the figure in front of the car near it, you can create the illusion that they are in scale. If you have any six inch figure you can try it and see what it looks like, just don't stand the figure next to cockpit becase that's the smallest part of the vehicle :)

Correct, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. I took this photo sometime ago but unfortunately I can't find my pic with Batman in front which created that effect.

Re: DC Collectibles doing Batman The Animated Series figures!!!!!

Yeah, I have em all. Loose and carded/boxed (plus some crazy OCD stuff like variants and a dozen Combat Belt Batmans).

That's exactly what I'm thinking of though, a display of "then and now". Combat Belt Batman paired up with the DCC BTAS Batman, Glider Robin with DCC BTAS Robin, etc.

That sounds awesome. I also like that these are coming with display bases, though I'm curious if they'll just be the circular, standard type, or something more specific; regardless, they should look pretty great displayed all together. Are you only getting the TAS offerings or collecting the whole series? Also, I know Joker was a point of debate, but the shot of him in the group photo actually looks better. Maybe it's because you can see the red on his top lip, but I do think they could elongate his nose just a pinch.

That'd be cool if the bases are a bit more specific, i.e. sculpted. Anything from the show logo, to the bat symbol. It'd be neat if the BTAS figures had the classic bat yellow oval base and the TNBA figures had the black bat. In all reality though, they're going to put effort into something like that. I bet they come with the, plain black stand bases that the first wave of Arkham Asylum figures had.

For now, I'm only getting the BTAS figures. I'm not a fan of the redesigns at all. Now, I'll probably buy TNBA Batman since DCC will hold the BTAS Batman over our heads until the end of time, but I'm not going to "collect them all". Only BTAS for now. I do have all of the Hasbro TNBA figures like the Batmobile, Detective Batman, Drake Robin, Nightwing, Rumble Ready Riddler, Arkham Asylum Two-Face and the Mr. Freeze with the insect head feature, but those weren't $25 a pop.

Cool. Reminds me of the intro. Now if we can get an updated/ cartoon accurate version from DCC, that would be even better :yess:

Re: DC Collectibles doing Batman The Animated Series figures!!!!!

I'm not 100% convinced that having the DCC figures right next to the Kenner Batmobile would look right. I actually think the Kenner Batmobile is undersized for the Kenner figures anyway (especially considering it's supposed to be a two sweater and can only fit one figure inside), so having a six inch figure next to it would look totally out of scale.
The only actual six inch height figure I have is Zsasz from the Arkham line so I used him to show the height. If you're going to display the DCC figures with the Kenner Batmobile then having it in the background is definitely the way to go!

I like the New Adventures designs. I agree wholeheartedly that the Animated Series designs are superior, for the most part, but I thought there were some real gems that came out of TNBA. Namely, Scarecrow and Penguin. With that in mind, I'm going to try to collect them all. Since they were just announced this year, we don't really have an idea of how often they'll be released, like we did with the Arkham lines, but, if this is consistently going to be their release schedule (2 waves per year), I don't think it's too big of a money pit; basically the price of a single Hot Toys figure each year for what? 8 figures? 4 TAS and 4 TNBA.

Re: DC Collectibles doing Batman The Animated Series figures!!!!!

Of course, then, too, I'm probably in the minority as someone whose always viewed The New Batman Adventures as a part of The Animated Series, so, for me, it's not so much the idea of collecting two separate lines as it is the idea of collecting one, all encompassing, definitive line.

Re: DC Collectibles doing Batman The Animated Series figures!!!!!

Zsazz doesn't look too bad there actually, good reference. Take the upcoming animated Batman and Robin and throw them in there and it wouldn't be that unsightly. The style should fit right in.

I don't think there was any possible way for the Kenner BTAS Batmobile to seat two figures and retain it's streamlined look. The cockpit would have been way too wide and if they adjusted the front and back to accommodate them, the overall vehicle would have been gigantic and clunky, like the Batman Returns Batmissile. Having those features messes with the shape of the vehicle in this scale. Even the 1/6 Hot Toys 1989 Batmobile looks a little boxy because of it.

Even in the actual show, it would be impossible for Batman and Robin to fit inside the vehicle (which is why it was faked with different perspective shots of them in the cockpit),

Hell, in Mask of the Phantasm, it reverts to a one seater.

That's the limitation of being able to do whatever you want in animation vs. taking those designs and making a three dimensional real world item out of it. That's why those custom, life size hot rod animated Batmobiles that people make from scratch never look right,

Yeah, that was aiming for that shot until I noticed later that the angle was way off. :lol

Thanks for the pics. Looks like it's doable with some clever positioning and I think I have some ideas in mind. No way am I not using the Batmobile for these new figures.

Yeah. the Kenner is a compromise of all the looks but until somebody does a reference quality Batmobile for these figures, I guess we're all stuck with the Kenner one.

Hmm, I might as well dig up the TNBA Batmobile in storage while I'm at it. I might be wrong, but I think it's wider than the BTAS Batmobile but might be shorter in length as well.

I've always viewed them as separate. Don't get me wrong, I love the stories with TNBA (Legends of the Dark Knight and Over the Edge are some of my favorite episodes), but the redesigns killed it for me. I thought all of them except Penguin were ghastly. I can't look at it as one all encompassing show when TNBA is essentially an overhaul. The emphasis on the "Bat-Family", Drake and Batgirl specifically was never something I was into. And I didn't like how they ****ed up Mr. Freeze, Clayface, Riddler and Two-Face characterization wise. Then of course, it wasn't just the redesigns or the way that they were written that bothered me, there was a certain aesthetic missing from TNBA that was apparent in BTAS. TNBA was more like a spin off of STAS then it was BTAS. I really missed those noirish title cards from the classic show too.

It's existence alone begs for comparison, a "this" vs. "that" sort of view. Something I always found strange is why they didn't change that great BTAS opening for TNBA? They changed everything else?

That's another good one. Not my favorite, but a solid vehicle nonetheless.

It had to be to accommodate that Detective Batman. The shoulders and glove blades were massive on that one. It takes some finagling to get him in there too. I also really liked how they made room in the back just in case you wanted to stick Robin back there. I just thought it was a little odd how they had the seat facing the wrong way, just like the BTAS Batplane.

Re: DC Collectibles doing Batman The Animated Series figures!!!!!

I can see that. I personally liked their designs for Batman, Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, Penguin, Scarecrow, and Freeze. I wasn't a huge fan of Freeze's whole "spider" thing, but I accepted it for what it was, and I can appreciate what they were doing with it (using it as a visual metaphor for Freeze's lost humanity). As far as designs go, though, I think the only one I have a particular amount of disdain for is Riddler; the one piece pajama suit just didn't for with the interpretation; and characters like Two-Face and Clayface were so similar that it really made no difference. People like Joker, Bane, and Croc were right in the middle of the love/hate spectrum; they were just kind of there and kind of "meh," but, for the most part, as far as designs go, the TNBA models were different, no doubt, but, nevertheless, well done, in my opinion. Though I can see how some might not find it as easy to chew on, as they are quite different, stylistically, from TAS.

As far as characterizations go, I already addressed my thoughts on Freeze, and, in a way, The Judge/Two-Face represents something similar. It never really gelled well with me, but I do have an appreciation for their pushing the envelope, in regards to adult themes, the Judge thing sort of reminded me of Morrison's Arkham Asylum, where Two-Face's personality had fractured so much that he now used a die to make his decisions. I'll concede, though, that the Clayface abusive father to the little girl part of himself stuff was just weird, though.:lol

Re: DC Collectibles doing Batman The Animated Series figures!!!!!

It wasn't just the one piece suit, I mean, atleast that was in the style of the Frank Gorshin Riddler. The bald head, black eyes and slippers is what got me the most. I also think the Joker is an abomination with those eyes and lack of lips, but I digress. :lol

And yeah, Clayface. To me, he died in Mudslide. Having that crap with TNBA undermined that entire episode. Also, I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I thought Freeze was better in the series when his wife was actually DEAD, not frozen in some tube like a snow globe angel. I wouldn't have had a problem with Heart of Ice being the only appearance of Mr. Freeze. It said all it needed to about such a tragic character. It's like they saw the success of that great episode and instead of leaving it alone as a stand alone (like they should have), they attempted to recreate it. Just when you think it's over and they give him the proper send off, there he is, back with spider legs.

Re: DC Collectibles doing Batman The Animated Series figures!!!!!

I'll be sticking to the BTAS designs. Hopefully Batman is in series 3.

Minority or not, you would be completely correct.

Probably in series 4. The next wave will probably have 3 new adventures figures and only 1 BTAS figure, and it could be anyone, the Riddler, Penguin, Harley, Clayface...and the list goes on and on. He should have been in the first series.

Re: DC Collectibles doing Batman The Animated Series figures!!!!!

It's not really debatable or subjective. The New Adventures IS a continuation and part of the Bruce Timm/Paul Dini animated "canon," and the same goes for Batman Beyond weather people like it or not. Are they better or as good as BTAS? Now that's subjective :)

TNBA Joker was the abomination o the bunch and 17 years later I would still as "What were they thinking?" :slap

Since the series continued longer than what they had planned, I guess we should allow that slide (no pun intended). Clayface last appeared in the JL episode where he finally gets blown to pieces and that was his final chronological appearance.

Thankfully for all the characters that had to be stretched thin (again, no pun intended), we got truly magnificent stuff like Freeze's closure in Batman Beyond or Catwoman's in JLU.

So is Justice League and JLU. I always wondered why some fans never considered JL as a part of the series when clearly it is a direct sequel, and a great one too.

Those stupid black eyes.... I take "nipple-eye" Two face original design over TNBA Joker any day of the week.

Yeah, if I remember correctly, the final episode of Batman Beyond was related to JLU. And Superman the animated series is also canon. They had a few crossover episodes :)
