Oh look, Deniro making face #4. Next comes the head tilt and squinting. Maybe he'll go wild, and combine it with the nodding. :lol

Unfortunately DeNiro has become a caricature of himself, it's all just a bunch of mannerisms now. Pacino has kept it a bit more in check, but he's not much better.
Really puts into perspective what an amazing job Phoenix did. I can, comparing his Commodus role, to his role in Her, to this... wow, that's quite some range. And, hate Leto's take as much as you want, but it's really solid acting. Again, compare his Joker role to Ray in Dallas Buyer's Club or to Wallace in BR 2049, the man can act.
But I suppose there comes a point in every actor's life where they just hang on to the mannerisms to carry them over.

Johnny Depp also fell into the mannerisms trap for a while after Pirates.

Marlon Brando once told Depp that if you stick around too long, you'll run out of masks/faces to wear, because there's only so many you can take out of your bag before running out...or something to that effect.

Pacino and Deniro were still good until the late 90s, but I think aging, a lack of good roles, and easy money made them lazy. Perhaps that's why Daniel Day Lewis retired again. You either die a hero like Ledger, or you live long enough to become Deadniro.

Brando is correct. Most actors, with the exceptions of Meryl Steep and Daniel Day Lewis and the like, have only a few tricks in their arsenal. In fact, most famous actors are really just "personalities" that we (the audience) really like. They're like one-trick ponies, but we love that one trick. Like Cary Grant or Humphrey Bogart. And because of that, they can easily become icons.

Well, the way I see it, as long as they can make me believe that the emotion they're portraying is real, I'm ok with it. There's really very few actors who can make you forget who they are. Day-Lewis is certainly one of them. Pacino used to be able to do it as well. DeNiro not so much IMHO. Although his Godfather II role really is brilliant, and very different from Taxi Driver.

How about Nicholson? I think he's a mixture of both, great actor but also a "personality." I put Mickey Rourke and Hackman in that same group.

Nicholson and Hackman are among my favorite actors... and great actors they are, but I must admit they have a limited bag of tricks, mostly relying on the same bits. But I love Jack's 'madness' and Hackman's 'rage'.

Like I said, most great actors are not truly great actors. They are intriguing personalities. If they can act beyond that engaging aspect, that's a clear bonus. For instance, Hackman is a far better actor than Harrison Ford, because he has greater range... but they both get boxed in and "do what they do best". I'd say Hackman is a much better actor than DeNiro, because DeNiro's range is really tight. But Deniro does what he does really well and doesn't risk doing much beyond that.

Gary Oldman seems to have unlimited range, but I could be wrong.

Gary Oldman is one of the more versatile actors and he has a lot of tricks, many more than most.

People like him I associate as closer to what one thinks of as an "actor" compared to other actors who basically just do the same thing very movie... like Morgan Freeman. As soon as I say his name, you imagine him in his totality. I say Oldman, and its hard to pin down a "standard" performance, except that he likes to yell a lot and he's good at that.

Bale is trying to be a real actor, and he's been doing a very good job lately. He really disappeared into Cheney.

Harrison Ford has a ton of range as well. Just think of all the countless variations of how he points his one finger in people's faces when talking to them. It's almost like he becomes a different person entirely.

;)

Ford was really lucky, he had charisma and landed iconic characters to portray, like Solo and Indy (of course, he was really well cast and helped make those characters iconic). To me, his best work is Blade Runner, but he was totally overshadowed by Rutger Hauer, so there you go...
Gary Oldman is absolutely brilliant, but he's also running a bit low on tricks lately. And I couldn't agree more about Bale disappearing into Cheney, he got the mannerisms absolutely right.

You have high standards. Who are these mythical creatures you consider to be real actors? :lol

Indy is my favorite but Deckard is a close second. He has done some great characters and made them his own.
