Didn't see it, but wasn't the consensus that it was a bad movie? It flopped because of poor reviews. Stuff like Watchmen, V for Vendetta or Sin City isn't exactly appealing to wide audience. From the previews Deadpool already looks like a fun movie.
well the thing is that a lot of R rated movies could have been saved by being PG 13,
everyone hated alien vs predator and it got really low scores yet it made a bunch of money. sometimes when it comes to action or horror movies it doesn't matter how terrible they are, they end up making money just because teenagers were able to see them.
It keeps happening over and over, terrible pg 13 movies will make profit while decent R rated movies don't do so well.
for studios making R rated movies will always be risky,
Universal was ready to give the money to Guillermo Del Toro to make At the Mountains of Madness but with the condition that the movie was PG 13, (That movie is like the biggest passion project Guillermo has)
And then Guillermo said that he couldn't do it PG13, not because it was going to be gory or anything but just because of how bad his other movie was treated by the Ratings board.
They expected "don't be afraid of the dark" to be a PG 13 movie since there is no nudity or a lot of gore and the ratings board said it got an R just because of how scary it was, He said he couldn't guarantee to Universal that Mountains of Madness wouldn't have the same problem.
that one made me sad too because I really really wanted to see his version of Mountains
